Sharing of Soft Sharing of Soft ResourcesResources

Chapter Objectives• Provide an overview of soft resource sharing• Describe the method for placing a soft

resource for sharing and removing the same from sharing

• Discuss access controls to limit access at the file level

• Illustrate the mapping of drives for sharing• Use as many screen demonstrations as

necessary to highlight the practical side of soft resource sharing

MODULE

Initial Notes on Soft Resource Sharing

Module Objectives• Shareable entities• Disk, directory and file sharing case

example• The concept of share name• Viewing share name on the network• Access control• Demonstration of share name view and

access control

Shareable Entities

• Entire disk– Independently

• Directories– Independently

• Files– Within the context of the directory in

which they reside

The Concept of Share-Name

• Each resource (directory) is shared using a name

• The name can be the same name as the original resource (directory) itself

Limiting Access to Individual Files

Module Objectives

• File sharing limitation in Windows peer-to-peer networks

• Limiting access to selected files• Case example for limiting file sharing• Steps for hiding the file named Rules• Demonstration on hiding the file name

Rules

File Sharing Limitation in Windows Peer-to-Peer

Sharing

• Access to files cannot be individually controlled in sharing

• The lowest level of access control is limited to directories – All the files in the directory thus

become shareable automatically

Limiting Access to Selected Files

• Store all the files to be shared in one or more separate directories designated specially for sharing – This is not always possible

• Hide the files in the directory that are not shared– Also assign read-only access control

to these files

Removing the Hidden File Attribute

Module Objectives

• The multi-step process• Steps for removing the hidden file

attribute on Tariff• Steps for removing the read-only and

hidden file attributes on rules• Restoring hidden file attribute to system

files on Tariff• Demonstration of removing the read-

only and hidden file attributes

A Multi-Step Process

• First, remove the hidden attribute on all the files in the directory using the explorer view

• Select the file named Rules independently and remove the Read-only and Hidden file attributes

• Reestablish the hidden file attribute to system files

Mapping of Drives for Sharing

Module Objectives

• Definition of drive mapping• Mapping drives illustrated• Notes on mapping• A case example for drive mapping• Steps for mapping a drive• Demonstration of drive mapping

Drive Mapping Defined

• A resource on the network is mapped to a local drive– By assigning a drive letter

• A logical drive is thus temporarily created at the local peer corresponding to that network resource

Notes on Mapping

• Resources that could be mapped:– Drives– Directories

• Different procedures can be followed for drive mapping

• A mapped drive can be disconnected as well
