*1740: Holy Roman Emp. Charles VI died, and only heir was daughter Marie Theresa. Many felt that it must be a male heir, so before his death he pushed for Pragmatic Sanction. This would allow her to inherit the lands, but not be Empress.

-Became Empress in 1745 when husband elected Emperor.

*Hard to rule lands b/c so large, many languages & groups of people, etc. (Germany especially resentful)
