In true Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret fashion, the East Vancouvertheatre collectiveÕs upcoming production takes place on amovie set for a 1955 musical. PHOTO JENNIFER GAUTHIER
BY JENNY PENG
Outside Dusty FlowerpotCabaret’s studio, groupsof strangers chitchat andexchange curious gazes beforetheir audition with artisticdirector Kat Single-Dain.
None of the 15 womenknows what to expect exceptfor an online clipping in TheDusty Flowerpot Gazetteannouncing an upcomingproduction in May at theRussian Hall. In classic DustyFlowerpot fashion, the showcounts on everyone to pitchin, inviting audience membersto attend the filming of the1955 musical extravaganzaThe Queen of Mercy.
Single-Dain, one of thecollective’s founding members, gets to work bouncing to1930s jazz. The dancers diveinto vintage footwork, tappingand swinging while Single-Dain scouts for candidateswith crisp coordination and adash of playfulness.
East Van theatre collective gets ready forits close-up
The sequences are a walkdown memory lane for Single-Dain who watched Fred Astairemusicals while her friends werebusy with the Backstreet Boys.True to the collective’s focus oncommunity engagement, sheinsists everyone at the auditionwill have a part.
The birth of Dusty Flowerpotdates back to 2006 when agroup of artists assembled inpainter Jordan Bent’s KeeferStreet studio to discuss puttingon a show for the AydenGallery. But when the gallerydecided to pull out of theshow, the artists decided tocontinue and mount TheValley of Ashes about a boy ona quest to grow the flowerpotstrapped to his back.
The momentum from thefirst show snowballed intosubsequent productionssuch as 2011’s Hard Times
Hit Parade. Set in the1930s, the “theatrical dancemarathon” was adapted froma screenplay written by Single-Dain about dance marathons
during the Depression.Withthe help of designer andbuilder Brodie Kitchen, theRussian Hall was transformedinto a 1930s dance hallwith custom-built woodenbleachers lining the perimeterof the venue.
With roughly 15 core members, the cabaret swells and contractswith new and old talents. Forthe first few shows, rehearsalspace was temporary. The
Valley of Ashes was producedentirely out of communitycentres, recalls Single-Dain.
The troupe settled thisDecember at its new rehearsaltheatre in Mount Pleasantunder a 10-year lease withthe city. Having a place tostore props and costumesmeans more play timeand “popcorning” sessionswhere they experiment andbrainstorm. The kernels ofideas are then submitted
at “dust storms” where thecurating committee examineswhich project to endorsebased on its communityengagement mandate.
Audience participationhas become a signature inthe cabaret’s shows. Formost of the core members,it’s an extension of theirclown training with DavidMacMurray Smith at FantasticSpace Enterprise. But it’snot clowning as one wouldexpect, explains actor AlastairKnowles. Clown schoolteaches students how toconnect with the audienceby being spontaneous andincorporating them in dialogue.
Its rootedness in communityis what distinguishes DustyFlowerpot from the Vancouvertheatre scene said Knowles.
“I don’t see the DustyFlowerpot engaging in thetheatre dialogue as much aswe engage in the communityoutreach and communitytheatre things. The festivals weproduce are very theatrical andthey involve the community ina very large extent.”
Despite the consensus onaudience participation, thegenres and aesthetics of theDusty Flowerpot Cabaret’s pastperformances are as eclecticas the ensemble that makesup the collective. Every showis a blend of the artists’ skillsand vision, from storytellingand pantomime, to live music, videos, dance and puppetry.
“It’s an anarchist process,”said actor and writer AmberMcIntyre-Byatt. “It’s as big asa Broadway show in a waybut it’s not perfect in that therecan never be a mistake. That’sway more thrilling.”
Whether it’s a dance marathonor a movie set, DustyFlowerpot Cabaret is open tousing any medium that makessense for the production andcreates an immersive world forthe audience says Single-Dain,who compares the bygonequality of their shows toGeorge Lucas’s Star Wars films.“It’s in a future time but youfeel like it’s in the past becausethere’s a sense of history.”
