CENTRAL REGION NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2012
KIM MOLONEY, CENTRAL REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER,
Foxden House, Main Street, Grendon Underwood,Buckinghamshire HP18 OSH.
Tel: 07789 938307 E mail:- kimmoloney@britishdressage.co.uk
Hello Everyone,
Welcome to our first regional newsletter of the year. It is packed full of training dates &
information dates for Senior Riders (aged 18 & over), Para Riders, Judges, Coaches, Members
and anyone who is interested in our sport of dressage. Regional Training is open to all levels as
stated and also open to non members.
Our forthcoming senior residential camp at Addington Manor Ec, Buckinghamshire in May was
full within 72 hours of placing details on the BD website! I know some of you were really
disappointed not to secure your place and I am really sorry we could not accommodate all of
you. We will however be running another Senior Camp at Wellington Riding EC, Hampshire in
September. I will email out information once we have finalised the date.
I receive enquiries on a regular basis about “official training” & some were a little confused as to
which camps, training, etc. is classed as official, given the need for compulsory attendance for
teams, Judging, etc., well that is an easy one to answer as all payments for courses, camps etc.
are payable to British Dressage and not an individual. This way we can record your attendance
and have you in the system as such.
Many thanks must go to those named above on the Central Region Committee, who are a strong,
fun team that are a huge support to me and to whom without I definitely could not exist as an
RDO – thank you all.

Many congratulations to our regional “Mums to be” l Jo Swain is due her second baby in August,
Jo will continue to train an support the region throughout her pregnancy, Jenny Davies who has
been a massive supporter of our region for the past eight years, Vicki Lovell Nott, Jen Bradbury
(nee Englishby) and I am sure I will hear of many more…………it must be something in our
water!
We wish well to one of the nicest ladies you could ever wish to meet in our region, Sylvia Eames
and her lovely Upano who have represented us on the teams on several occasions . Sylvia has
decided to retire from riding and find a home for her lovely boy. Good luck to you both.
CENTRAL REGION TEAMS I have received a huge number of enquiries about representing
Central for the teams during 2012. I have included information on team selection/criteria for
our region during 2012, a snapshot is that we have moved more toward affiliated test results
during selection process. If you attend a viewing day (where you are coached, ride your test in
front of a Judge with feedback) all test results from that day will be made public at the event. We
encourage riders that we have not met before to attend viewing days as part of the selection
process. So many of you are already in the system and well known to the selectors’ so we do not
mind so much if you are unable to attend a viewing day. You will however need to remember
that you have to attend a minimum of three regional training sessions, two of which must be
mounted, camp counts as two.
The first of the team competitions during 2012 is the Senior Inter-Regionals at Keysoe on
19th-20th May and the second one is the Senior Home International which has been allocated
to Addington Manor EC on 29th-30th September, 2012. The main difference between the two
events is that with the Inter-Regionals you represent your region (see schedule for rules below)
and with the Home International you represent your country. If you have ridden at either the
Winter or Summer Dressage Championships (not including Area Festival or Music) then you are
prohibited from riding at the Inter-Regionals for two years, you may however ride at the Home
International at the level above………………………hope this is all making sense to you! Ie, if you
have ridden at say the Winter Championships at say, Elementary then you will need to try out
for a team place at Medium or above for the Home International. Like I say, Music and Area
Festival classes are not included.
HOW DO I REGISTER MY INTEREST TO REPRESENT CENTRAL- to save on paper, please
email me with the level at which you would like to be considered for a place on the team or as
an individual with a little bit about recent form, say the past six months and ensure you have
met with the criteria (see below). Final team announcements will be made on the Central
Region Webpage at http://www.britishdressage.co.uk/your_regions/central_region on 30th
April for the Inter-Regionals and 22nd August for the Home International.
TEAM CLOTHING is available to order directly from Bee Promoted at:-
www.bee-promoted.co.uk Our regional colour is red. & our contact there is Linda who can be
reached on 01462 815388, Linda is really helpful and aware of our team clothing requirements.

SENIOR REGIONAL SELECTION POLICY 2012
OBJECTIVE OF SELECTION POLICY
The over-riding objective of the Selection Policy is to guide selection of Regional teams in a fair,
equitable and transparent way. Selection for Teams is open to all British Dressage members
resident in the respective BD Region.
Selection is subject to compliance with British Dressage, BEF and FEI Rules on doping and
medication control for Human and Equine.
The Selection Policy applies to the selection of riders / teams for the following:
• Senior Home International
• Senior Inter-Regional Competition
• Para Home International
SELECTION PANEL
All Selectors will be appointed by the British Dressage Regional Committee. They will have the
knowledge and experience required to effectively select teams and will be as free from all
vested interests / conflicts of interest as is possible. A register of Declarations of Interest will be
maintained by the CEO of British Dressage and is available for inspection.
The Selection Panel will comprise the following:-
• Senior Training Representative / Para Representative (dependent on level of team)
• Regional Development Officer
• 1 x other individual considered to have suitable experience and no perceived conflict of
interest
If any member of the Selection Panel would like to be considered for selection then they must
stand down from the Selection Panel for the relevant event and should not take part in any of
the selection processes for this event.
If any one of the Selectors has privately trained any rider who is being considered for selection
they must not take part in the selection decision involving that individual.
NB: Subject to budgetary constraints, Regional Committees are encouraged to consider using
the third selection position for an individual from outside the region. Where this is not possible,
it is vital the selector should have no connections to individuals being considered.
ELIGIBILITY / AVAILABILITY FOR CONSIDERATION
The RDO is responsible for ensuring that all riders available for selection have current British
Dressage membership.
Only riders fulfilling the criteria stated in the schedule will be considered for selection.
Riders applying for consideration for selection MUST ensure their availability for the dates of
the respective competition they are applying for. Received applications will deem to be
automatic acceptance of the published competition dates.
Riders will only be considered for two team competitions in any one calendar year. Therefore
BYRDS riders will only be eligible for two of the three competitions listed in the selection policy.
However, in exceptional circumstances (e.g. the region has too few riders who meet the
required eligibility levels), this restriction may be waived with the approval of the Regional
Committee.
Riders may only represent their region in one category each calendar year, ie: BYRDS or
Senior’s. Para riders may go forwards for the Para Home International and one other
competition either BYRDS or Senior Inter-Regional’s, Sheepgate Under 25’s .
Senior Competitions
• Riders are also required to attend three BD regional training events in the 12 month
period preceding the final selection date. Attendance at Regional training in
neighbouring regions can be included and Riders should inform their RDO if they have
attended training in another region.
• Regional residential camps will be counted as two BD regional training events.
• One non-ridden session may be considered (e.g. DVD evenings, veterinary talks etc).
• Senior Riders may be required to submit progress charts at the request of the regional
selection panel.
Para Selection
• Riders are required to attend two regional training days and both must be ridden.
• The Para Home International is open to Para riders aged 14 yrs and over.
• Riders need to produce test sheets from 3 para dressage competitions in the 12 months
preceeding selection.
SELECTION COMPETITIONS / VIEWING DAYS
If a Selection or Viewing event is held the RDO will inform all riders who have expressed
interest in team selection and will make it clear if the event is compulsory or optional for riders
who wish to be selected. It will also be made clear if the Selection Panel will be present at the
event, and if the results from the event are to play a major part in selection. Competition results,
feedback from trainers, participation, communication and the ability to work as a team player
will also be taken in to consideration at this time.
CONFIDENTIALITY
It is vitally important for the integrity of the Selection Policy and those involved in its
application both as riders, owners, selectors or other officials, that there is at all times a high
degree of confidentiality relating to information which may have a bearing on selection.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The Selectors wish to make it as clear as possible to everybody concerned the reasons for their
selection and the following criteria are important:-
Results
Selection will be based primarily on results from BD competitions.
The Selectors will monitor the results from BD competitions at the level the rider will be
required to compete at the Home Internationals / Sheepgate / Senior Inter-regionals. The
previous 12 months results will be considered, although consistency and recent form will take
priority.
Past form at major events and team events, may be taken into consideration by the selectors.
Team Spirit
Team spirit is of utmost importance and the Selectors expect riders and their supporters to have
good attitude and participate in all the required activities. A high level of commitment to all the
varied aspects for the preparation process is expected and vital.
Therefore, Selectors will consider the individual’s approach to Regional activity when making
their final selection.
The Selectors reserve the right not to send a team or individual to any competition.
FITNESS
Although good results in competitions are important, the onus is on the riders not to over
campaign their horses / ponies.
It is important that riders plan ahead so they and their horse / pony are in the best form for the
designated Home International / Inter Regional.
FINANCE
All Home Internationals / Inter Regional competitions will be entirely self-funded by riders in
2012.
Regions may conduct fund-raising activity to assist riders with the funding of attendance at the
competition. Details will be available via the RDO.
RULES
All Selected riders agree to abide by the rules of the competition at all times.
SUBSTITUTION
The Selectors may substitute a Team member for a Reserve between the announcement of the
Team up to one hour before the Veterinary Inspection (Home International) or start of
competition (Inter Regionals / Sheepgate). However the reason for a substitution must be only
because either there is a strong veterinary case for substitution or the performance of the Team
member has dropped off to such an extent that for the success of the Team a substitution is vital.
The latter situation will almost certainly occur as a result of a veterinary problem which it may
or may not be possible to define given the time/resources available at the time.
If the decision is made to change a Team member for a reserve then this issue must be handled
in a very sensitive and sympathetic manner.
CHANGES IN POLICY
The Selectors will have the right to amend or change selection policies where necessary at any
time in order to fulfil the objectives of the Selection Policy as long as these changes and
amendments are clearly communicated to all parties.
CANCELLATION / POSTPONEMENT
In the event of cancellation the relevant parties will be notified straightaway. In the event of
postponement a situation might arise where a new and/or different squad needs to be selected
in which case all parties will be notified and normal procedure for selection will be followed.
FORCE MAJEURE
In the event of exceptional circumstances beyond the NGB’s control e.g. disease outbreak in
horses or humans, war or terrorism, the British Dressage Board reserves the right to make the
decision either to change the selection policy or procedure which might include withdrawing
the Teams from competition or cancelling the competition.
VETERINARY / MEDICAL
Short listed riders must notify their RDO /Senior Training or Para Representative of any change
in their own health or fitness status, or their horse / pony health status or veterinary / medical
management immediately.
AVAILABILITY
A rider’s application (to be considered for selection) is taken as a rider’s declaration to be
available for the dates of the competition for which they have applied.
ENQUIRIES
Enquiries about the Selection Policy can be made either in writing or on the telephone to the
RDO in the first instance or relevant Selector.
APPEALS PROCESS AND PROCEDURES
Riders have the right to appeal against the decision of the selectors. Appeals must be made in
writing within 48 hrs of the announcements. Appeals must be sent to the Chief Executive of
British Dressage. If the Chief Executive is not able to satisfy the appellant’s concerns the appeal
may be forwarded to the BEF. The processes and procedures of the BEF Appeals process are set
out in the BEF Rule Book.
Code of Conduct for attendees at Central Region Activities
On arrival, riders must conform to the Centre’s rules at all times and on arrival
familiarise themselves with all fire points, first aid points, and Health and Safety rules
for the centre.
A high standard of horse care and management must be maintained throughout the
duration of camp.
Riders need to control horses at all times both mounted and unmounted.
All Riders should be respectful of all trainers and others around them at all times and act
in a safe and polite manner at all times.
Riders should support and encourage others at all times.
Correct dress code should be abided to at all times.
Please leave the venue clean and tidy
Please can riders inform others if you are leaving the camp, and put your mobile phone
number on your horse’s door in case of emergency.
Leave an emergency home contact number with your chef de quipe.
Remember to thank the organisers before you leave.
PETLAN AREA FESTIVALS
The Petplan Equine Area Festivals were introduced in 1999 to give grass-roots riders the
opportunity to perform in true championship conditions at leading venues across Britain.
To be part of the glitz and glamour of these prestigious shows, which run from July to October
each year, is easier than you think. All you need to do to qualify is compete at affiliated shows
and score just 62% twice at one level from preliminary to elementary and 60% twice from
medium to prix st georges between 1 January and the closing date for entries for your area
festival.
Your score sheets are your proof of qualification. You need to send the original sheets, with the
date and venue of the class written on them, to the show organiser of the area festival you
would like to go to, together with your entry form. Test sheets can only be used once, but it is a
good idea to keep copies as they will not be returned to you.
You do not need to be a British Dressage (BD) member or have a registered horse to qualify for
an area festival at preliminary level, but you will need to become a BD member to ride at an
Area Festival. If you qualify for the Petplan Equine Championships, you will also need to register
your horse with BD to compete there.
If you are riding at novice level upwards, you can also compete without being a member by
using class tickets or training classes, but both horse and rider have to be registered before
entering an area festival.
At preliminary level, only riders in group 7 or 8 and horses with 49 points or fewer are eligible
when qualifying. Group 4-8 riders can compete in area festivals up to and including advanced
medium level, group 3 riders can only compete at novice level and above, group 2 riders are
only allowed to compete at advanced medium level and above and group 1 and group 2A riders
are not allowed to enter area festivals at all. If you upgrade after qualifying, you can still
compete at the area festival.
The Petplan Equine Championships run alongside the Winter Championships, which take place
annually in April at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire. The top two combinations at medium
level and above with a score of 62% or more at area festivals qualify for the finals. If the classes
are split, then the winner from each section will qualify. A horse/rider combination which
qualifies for both the Area Festival championships and the winter championships in the same
year may only compete in the Area Festival championship at a higher level than in the winter
championship. Music freestyle classes are included. Those qualified for both must withdraw
from the Area Festival championship.
At preliminary, novice restricted, novice open, elementary restricted and elementary open the
top four combinations with a score of 62% or more will qualify. If the classes are split, then the
first and second from each section will qualify. At the championships, these three classes will
run in a two-round format. Round one will be in the morning when two arenas of 30
competitors each will run concurrently. In the afternoon, the top 15 from each arena will go
through to the final round.
The dates of the area festivals are listed below..
Wild cards will be issued after close of entries for the Area Festival Championships to the next
highest qualified percentages across all Area Festivals for any class which has not been filled.
Entries received after the closing date from pre-qualified combinations will not be accepted
once wild cards have been issued.
Please note that the information given here is a simplified guide and that you will need to refer
to the current British Dressage Rules for full details.
Eligibility for Area Festivals
Qualification for an Area Festival is restricted to individual horse/rider combinations.
Once qualified for the Area Festival, combinations may compete even if they
subsequently upgrade.
Combinations competing at Winter/Summer Regional Championships will not be
eligible for any Area Festivals at that level or below in the same calendar year with the
exception of Freestyle to Music classes when they will only lose their eligibility to
compete in Area Festivals if they compete at the Winter Championships or Wellington
Championships.
Group 4-8 riders may compete in Area Festivals up to and including Advanced Medium
level, depending on their eligibility. Only Group 7 & 8 riders may compete at Prelim
level. Group 3 riders may only compete at Novice and above. Group 2 riders may only
compete at Advanced Medium level and above. Group 1 and 2A riders may not enter
Area Festivals at any level.
Once a rider has ridden at the National or Winter Championships, they cannot compete
at that level or below on another horse in Area Festivals in that year or the following
year. Riders who have competed in any Para Equestrian Championship, or the Area
Festival Championship which run alongside the Winter Championships, are exempt
from this restriction.

THE SCALES OF TRAINING….At a non BD event I witnessed a coach warming up a rider for
their test, the coach was trying very hard with the rider to encourage & relax them whilst a
“senior” coach appeared on the scene and asked why they were not working with “the scales of
training” to which the original coach replied “never heard of them”! Hmmmmmmmn, which led
me to ask Angela Niemeyer Eastwood who is one of our regional UKCC L3 Coaches for a short
article in order we can help to spread the word, so here it is……………………………………………
The Scales of Training:-What are these? What do they mean? Why are they relevant/essential
to me and my dressage horse?
The Scales of Training are the foundation stones of successful dressage training. Actually, they
are fundamental to any and all horse training. Given that the average horse is approximately
650+ kilos of muscle and instinct, how else are you going to ride safely with your paltry weight
(whatever you might weigh)? Answer- adherence and attention to the Scales of Training.
So, what are they? Rhythm (and regularity - this is nothing to do with speed, it is the
metronomic beat of each pace – some horses have a natural rhythm, others need help);
Suppleness (through the body – longitudinal - and also from side to side - lateral); Contact (from
UKCC INTERACTIVE TASTER AND INTRODUCTION DAY
MONDAY 11 JUNE 2012, 10am until 3pm(approx)
Led by Jill Day with Jenny Ward at Brampton Stables, Stables Lane, Church Brampton,
Northampton NN6 8BH
Jill Day is a former British Dressage Director of Training and one of BD’s most senior Coach
Educators and Assessors.
Jenny Ward is a Coach Educator and Assessor and Central Region Coaching Delegate.
This day is designed to give a “hands-on” approach to the UKC Certificate covering parts of
topics at both Level 2 and Level 3. There will be an opportunity to put your coaching skills
into practise but it is all very informal and hopefully interactive. If you are not sure which
level might be suitable for you then this is your chance to find out and to ask any questions
you may have.
This is a day purely for the Region’s coaches and any other interested parties and a perfect
opportunity to pitch your coaching skills amongst friends!
Guinea pig riders will be provided but there will be absolutely no pressure to teach unless
you want to and every opportunity to learn.
We have managed to subsidise this workshop and offer it to you at only £20 for the day
including tea, coffee & biscuits. Please feel free to bring along a packed lunch. Cheques
payable to British Dressage with course details & your contact details to be written on the
reverse of the cheque and send to me please. We are limited to 15 places only so please book
early with me.
behind over the back to the hand – not pulled into a shape in front); Impulsion (controlled
forward energy, not speed; achieved through transitions); Straightness, and, ultimately, as a
result of the preceding five steps, Collection.
What do they mean? Without rhythm, you don’t have regularity and you can’t have suppleness
or a genuine contact. Without these three, you won’t manage impulsion or straightness
(evenness into both reins and hind feet stepping into and sometimes over the track of the
forefeet), and without all of these, true collection simply won’t happen (think Valegro &
Uthopia). Each step is crucial and should be viewed as a building block.
Why are they relevant/essential - can you start, stop, turn left, turn right, go sideways, shorten
and lengthen the stride within the paces? Is your horse obedient, light to your aids and in your
hands, a pleasure to ride and easy to control? If so, the Scales of Training have been achieved.
These Scales are the concentrated result of many years of discussion, theory and practice of
training horses by top riders, trainers and judges – for dressage, show jumping, eventing,
vaulting, western – whatever. All these, now Olympic, disciplines require an obedient,
malleable, flexible, willing horse to get the maximum result and co-operation, with the minimum
of effort from you, the rider. And, for sure, safe hacking also requires all these qualities.
And - how do you think Para riders manage? They use the Scales too. If your trainer doesn’t
know about or use them, then perhaps it’s time for some DIY education. Try reading
‘Understanding Dressage Training’ by Angela Niemeyer Eastwood & Andrea Hessay. Also, the
‘The Principles of Riding’ edited by the German Federation and the ‘FEI Dressage Handbook,
Guidelines for Judging’.
It’s a truism that every time you get on a horse, you train it whether you mean to or not – so why
not adopt and use the Scales of Training to help you both on the correct path? View them as the
golden threads that take you towards your goals – whatever they may be.
