A young woman and her caughter were-re badly injured when their shack wasburnt recently.
As far as could be determined, the in-cident took place on 6 January whena 20-year-old Ntombi Fonya had justput her year-old daughter Anna to sleepat Khutsong’s Cross Road section.
Fonya was apparently baking breadon aparaffin stove around 16:00 andleft Anna in bed to join some neigh-bours who were sitting at the nearbyshack. Mantwa Maseko (44), a neigh-bour who was sitting outside facing theshack, suddenly saw some smoke co-ming from Fonya’s shack after Ntombihad joined them. She immediately aler-ted Fonya that the shack was burning.Fonya ran to the shack that had alreadycaught fire and ran inside to rescue herdaughter.
When came running out of her shackher head and T-shirt were burning andshe was holding the baby by the leg.Mtwana helped to put the flames outwith water and screamed for help. Shealso took the child to the nearby clinic
which was closed at the time. She then returned to the scene to join
community members who were callingthe fire rescue and ambulance services.During the waiting process some menhelped toput theflames intheshackout andtherewas a lotof smokeas the fi-re hadgrownmuchbiggerbut waspreven-ted fromburningtheshack completely. The burning had las-ted for about 20 minutes when the am-bulance came and took Ntombi and An-na to the hospital. Anna’s 23-year-oldfather, Lucas Sithole, who was also re-
siding at the shack, was at work whenthe incident occurred and returned tofind his shack and everything that hehad owned burned to ashes. All theirclothes, particulars and even their last
money forthe monthhad beenconsumedby the fire.Lucas la-ter went toCarleton-ville Hos-pital, onlyto find thatAnna hadbeentransfer-red to Ba-ragwanathhospital inSoweto. Her mo-
ther had been badly burnt on the face, back and arms but her most serious in-jury was to her face. According to Sitho-len she cannot see properly, still hasa swollen face and her nose, mouth and
ears were all burnt. Anna sustainedbad injuries on her legs and is still reco-vering in Baragwanath hospital.
The young family is pleading with theMerafong community to help out by do-nating clothes, food and they also needa new place to stay as they have to resi-de with a neighbour, Maseko, for nowuntil they can get back on their feet. “Iwould like to advice people not to leavestoves or candles burning because theycause problems for us as some of usdo not use electricity” said Maseko. Mthuthuzeli Thukapi (25) is a groupleader of a cultural dance crewknown as “Ubuhle Be Sintu”meaningthe beauty of heritage in Khutsong.
He was raised in Khutsong and hewas inspired by a visit to Soweto.
The yo-ung manwas intro-duced todancingwhen he be-gan partici-pating in adance pro-ductionknown as“Lean onme DanceTheatre”.He tookpart in con-temporary,gumboot,tap and cul-tural dan-ces. Heused hispositive in-fluencewhen he re-turned tothe Khutsong township after two ye-ars as he had noticed that there wasno cultural dance groups around. With the experience that he had gai-
ned he started his own group. He thenapproached local schools and talked tothe teachers in charge of Arts and Cul-ture about what he aimed to introducein the schools. He was then given achance to train the students, he coa-ched scholars at Tswasungu and Badi-rile High School and he also taught at
Kamoheloand Phoro-rong prima-ry school.
He taughtdifferent gen-res of dancebut his mainfocus wascultural dan-ce specifical-ly because ithad been vie-wed as a pri-mitive tradi-tional practi-ce by youngpeople of thisgenerationas they seemto pay no at-tention to theart form. Hewas also con-cerned aboutthe youth lo-
sing touch with their cultural sense.“As I look five years or ten years form
now, young people will have lost theirheritage and this is a reminder for peo-
ple that we are Africans and we shouldstick to who we are,” emphasised thegroup leader.
His current group was formed in2012 and consists of 35 group mem-bers. Through dancing, Mthuthuzelihas managed to take some young peo-ple from gangsterism and he feels thatyoung people take part in such activi-ties because they do not have any posi-tive things to do as there are not manyfacilities in the Khutsong township. Healso feels that art is not taken seriouslyand it could help to rehabilitate theminds of the youth taking part in badactivities. The group has performed ata national competition known as “Zin-dala Zombele” (meaning music anddance) came a long way together inwhich they won the second position inNovember 2012. In 2013 they perfor-med in Potchefstroom at a festivalknown as “Die Aartkloppe”. During thesame year they also graced their pre-sence at the West Rand Carnival inRandfontein. In addition, the groupwon first position at the “Sonqoba”dance festival in which they competedagainst groups from as far as the NorthWest; and in 2014 they appeared at theMerafong Cultural competitions inwhich they also won the first and se-cond prizes as they had divided thegroup to fit into the different categoriesof the competition.
They are looking forward to a pro-duction that will focus on social issuessuch as raising crime awareness and
The group in the Zulu traditional wear
they would also like to motivate yo-ung people to do something for them-selves by utilising their God-given ta-lents to avoid getting involved in cri-me. They are hoping for help fromanyone who is willing to sponsorthem towards their goal of hosting aMerafong Dance Festival that will in-volve dance groups across the nation.
“I would like to emphasise that Me-rafong needs to have an ‘Art School’because it will help to kill the stigmaof gangsterism,” said Mthuthuzeli, who can be contacted on 073-544-7980.

There should be no excuses foranyone not to make a differencebecause it’s not about how muchyou have, but rather how muchyou care.
The “I don’t care” mentality iscausing life to be miserable foreveryone.
We all can make a difference inour unique ways; and one doesnot necessarily have to do orspend money to help others - so-metimes you can help someonejust by listening and saying wordsof encouragement.
Last week a shack was burntand the people who lived therelost everything. I felt a need to helpand I donated some of my old clo-thes to a man. I just felt it in my
heart to do something; I couldn’t leaveknowing that I could have helped in so-me way.
I then realised that I had no excusesnot to help the poor man who was leftonly with the clothes he was wearing.
I felt proud of myself after donatingwhat I could. Although I did not havemuch to give, the little I didmade a dif-ference, a significant difference, in hislife.
The little that you can do is the bestbecause an act of kindness on its ownis a blessing to the person who gives.
Poor people are looked down uponas if they are aliens and this is not rightbecause poverty and all bad thingshappen because of ignorance.
I have also noticed that people donot see any use in doing good forothers and they look at it in a sensethat when you give you lose. I am a gi-
ving and helpful person because I al-ways keep in mind what others havedone for me. — I would not be whereI am today if it weren’t for the peoplewho helped me overcome my strug-gles.
Remembering the kindnesses ofothers has helped me learn a basictruth: that to help someone is the bestthing one can do.
I believe that just by taking the timeto consider someone else is in itself anact of worship.
People may talk about how goodthey are and how devoted they are toGod, but when they have to assist theirfellow man they choose to turn away.So what does it mean to say that youare religious when you do not have theheart to assist others?
You find excuses instead of doingthe right thing that even your heart
tells you to do. Never forget thatwe are all made of the same mate-rial. It is true that there is morein giving than in receiving. If wewould only see that by helping aneighbourwe could actually chan-ge the world, because we are theworld. — It is never too late tomake a difference in someone’slife.
Let’s talk about it - No excuses

Drugs have become a major problemfor young people inMerafong and espe-cifically in Carletonville, where drugsare even used publicly at the taxi rank.
A popular drug known as “nyaope”has hit the streets of Carletonville witha loud bang in recent years. Accordingto former drug addicts, Diamond Mot-swagae (27) and Tebogo Nteu (26) whoreside in Khutsong Extension 3, manyhave fallen victim to bad influence.
“Nyaope is a badly addictive drug, which costs R 30 for a gram, and it le-ads to negligence and crime,” said Dia-mond. From his own experience he de-scribes the drug to be extremely addic-tive and also an appetite suppressent.Drug users do not live a normal life. They are always paranoid and alwayslooking for their next “fix”.
Apparently there are sellers locallywho buy the drugs in Johannesburgand distribute in town and the town-
ships. Many young men and womenwho have proper homes have decidedto become street kids in Carletonvilledue to the addiction problem. When theusers are cra-ving they stealanything tohelp them sa-tisfy their cra-ving. Accor-ding to Dia-mond,cravings re-semble actualstomachcramps.
The usershave found anew and quic-ker way of get-ting high, which is byburning the white powder to liquid andinjecting it. Apparently it also containsheroin, one of themost addictive drugs.
There are different drugs that have hitthe town and are frequently used byevenlypresentable youngpeople inCar-letonville. There are many methods of
substanceabuse thatma-ny employedyoung men, even students, are using, such as cocai-ne and Cat,which are snif-fed, as well asCrystal Methand Rock, which aresmoked by apipe. Themostpopular met-hod for usingdrugs is by
smoking it andotherdrugs canbe swal-lowed as pills such as ecstasy and acid. The issue of drugs is causing many yo-
ung people to be resented by their fami-lies because they become scared thatthey might steal.
“A life of drugs is not a life,” saidTebo-go, who has been helped to overcomethe challenge by the Masakhane YouthChristian Rehabilitation Centre inKhutsong. The users can fight the ad-dictionby findingpositive activities thatthey enjoy to keep themselves occupiedand by also avoiding bad company.
The two youngmen who spoke to theHerald mentioned that they would liketo be examples to other youngmen andwomen. Their message is: “Young peo-ple should not give up, live life to thefullest as it is meant to be and theyshould do the right thing.”
They strive to become better peopleby looking for opportunities for workand they appeal toMerafong organisati-ons or families with “nyaope” problemswho would like them to help counsel ormotivate drug users to contact them on078-810-0197/ 078-839-1942.

geringe, onbelangrike mense (Luk18:9-14).Die Boodskap sê in God se nuwe
Dié woef is,
lyk vir Wysneus, mal daaroor omdie wind tussensy of haar harete voel en diediertjie se eie-naars tel dit elke

When a service is rendered - paymentmust follow, that is the universal law oftrading.I would imagine a situation where a
company or an institution renderingservice going for years without beingpaid what is owed to them, that compa-ny will collapse – no doubt about that. The same applies to government insti-tutions which are tasked with delive-ring service to our people rich andpoor. Service delivery is the heartbeatof all municipalities in SA, but the ten-dency of not paying for services is alsovery rife among our people. Now aquestion becomes this – if youdon’t payfor the service rendered to you on aweekly or daily basis where do youthink the capacity to keep on giving youthe same service come from?Simple, if you don’t pay then you will
not receive services – it’s brutal but it’sfair. With the current statistics itmeanslack of funds from the municipality totake forward development- no moneyon development. When we talk of deve-lopment around our area wemust firstlook at our credit we owe to themunici-pality,with an estimatedR700mdeficitthemunicipality will never be in a posi-tion to deliver on its mandate which isservice delivery!
Unlike other townships we are a dif-ferent case altogether asweare still ree-ling from the trauma of the demarcati-on war and being officially incorpora-ted back in Gauteng in a proper way,not what happened.Paying for service is a financial issue
and it’s very sensitive. We need to calmdown, open up room for consultation, politiciansmust exercise patience, andthe community must display max-imumdiscipline and paywhatever theycan, and also visit themunicipal officesto make arrangementsThis process, I mean - the coming
back to the mighty Gauteng provincewas a blunder our leaders including usyoung leaders of the time have commit-ted. We were excited to be back intoGauteng but forgetting to give attentionto the fundamental programmes of ac-tually finalising everything and the wa-ter and services issue is one classicexample. This issue was left hangingand now it’s showing potential signs ofdividing the community yet again. Sountil a better solution is sort, we mustkeep on paying only the currentamount, at least just to keep the muni-cipality afloat so that they can continueto collect our bins and for the streetlight to burn all night to keep us safeand potholes to be fixed. That is whyit is wise to pay for what you consume.
Paying for every servicerendered is key and verywise

The municipality responded toquestions about its housing pro-gress following the group’s arrivalon Tuesday.“In 1996 government introduced
aprocesswherebypeople had to re-gister to be included on theGovern-ment Housing Waiting List. Thepurpose of the housing waiting listwas todetermine thehousingneedsin specific communities. Registrati-on during the allowed period pro-duced 22 000 applicants in theKhutsongArea. Thenumber of peo-ple registered on the list informedthe planning for the 18 000 housesin the Khutsong Housing Project, amunicipal spokesman indicated. He added that in 2004 Gauteng
Department of Housing started thePlanning Phase forKhutsongSouthExtensions 1,2 and 3. With theAmalgamation of Merafong City toNorth West money was only alloca-ted for the construction and servi-cing of 5 500 units.“Themunicipality then invited all
people in the 1996 to 2007 waitinglists to come forth and apply forhousing subsidies, based on theperson’s status at that particularpoint in time. This would have theimplication that if youwere apoten-tial qualifier in the 1996 to2007pe-riod, but your circumstances chan-ged to where you now had a perma-nent position or you married andyour joint income grew to above theR 3 500 limit, you no longer quali-fied on the day of capturing of yourapplication. Currently the projectis nearing completion. The munici-pality has already submitted a re-quest to Gauteng Department ofHousing for approval of furtherhousing projects. The approval offurther projects will be determinedby the availability of funds on theProvincial Budget. All names given through to the
municipality will be investigatedand dealt with according to merit,”the spokesman said about the day’smeeting with the residents.

A municipal official had to act fast onTuesdaywhena largegroupof residentswere upset about the fact that they stilldo not have houses. On Tuesday morning at about 11:00
a group of about 80 people, several ofthemelderly, arrivedat theMerafongCi-ty Local Municipality’s main building inCarletonville. Members of the grouptold the Herald that they wanted clarityon why they have still not received hou-ses.“We are upset because we still do not
have the houses that were promised tous.“My sister applied for ahouse in2001
but has still not heard anything. As faraswehaveheardmanypeoplewhohaveapplied for houses in 2008 and later ha-ve received their houses, while thosewho applied between 1996 and 2001are not being helped,” one of the upsetresidents, Christinah Sithole, told theHerald. Her sister, Anna Sithole, confirmed
that shehasbeenwaiting in vain formo-re than 10 years.“It seems like the municipality is gi-
ving out houses according to their ownlists.“They are not doing the right things,”
she complained.Although theupset residentsoriginal-
ly queued in themunicipality’s entrancehall, they were soon taken outside andaddressed by the municipality’s hou-sing manager, Lemmy Jofile.Jofile indicated, amongst other
things, that he was not sure when thenext housing subsidies would be gran-tedas this issuewashandledby thePro-vincial Government. As the current fi-nancial year will end in March, moremoney for further housing projectswould probably only become availableby April.Jofile also listened tovariouspeople’s
complaints and wrote many down. The
questions that were raised, amongstother things, dealt with when the sink-holes that fell in amongst the new hou-ses in “KhutsongExtension 5” would befilled up.With regard to this issue, Jofile indi-
cated, according to bystanders, that itcould take another 14 months to solvethe problem of the sinkholes as themu-nicipality has no insurance that coversthis problem and that it currently hasno money to deal with it otherwise.According to the community activist
who had organised for the residents togo to themunicipality for help, ThembaWisani, some issues are still left unan-swered.
“The municipality’s current systemsare not effective as no one can give ac-count of how many single mothers,child-headed families, disabled or oldpeople have received houses.“Many people are unhappy because
the municipality told them and actuallywrote on their documents that theywouldgethouses that theywouldbehel-ped in three years’ time. This has nothappened,”Wisani told the Herald afterthe meeting.“We are really grateful for officials
who take the time to try to address thecommunity’sproblemsaswecameherefor help and not to cause chaos,”Wisaniadded.

The Merafong City Local Municipalityhas started to take on residents whosemunicipal accounts are in arrears. Some Khutsong residents have re-
cently indicated to theHerald that theyhave received letters from the munici-pality indicating that they have to payoutstanding debts. The payment of long outstanding
debts is a controversial topic in thistownship as politicians, some ofwhom are currently in power, have al-legedly previously lobbied residentsnot to pay their accounts until livingconditions at the township have beenimproved.“We do notmind to pay our accounts
but cannot pay all the outstandingmo-nies that have heaped up. If the muni-cipality would scrap themoney thatweowed from the previous decades, when we were asked not to pay, wewould not have a problem,” a resident
told the Herald. As a result of this issue many resi-
dents of Khutsongwere up in arms du-ring the past week after themayor,Ma-phefo Mogale-Letsie,spoke on a Set-swana radio station about the issuelast Friday. Some listeners allege thatthe mayor said that people’s houseswould be taken away if they did not paytheir outstanding accounts. With this in mind the Herald asked
the municipality on Tuesday to shedmore light on the issue. This was theresponse:“The Sowetan reported in January
that residents in Khutsong received aletter indicating that their houseswould be sold if they do not pay theirmunicipal accounts. Following this ar-ticle Kaya FM picked up the issue andhad an interview with the MayoralCommittee Member for Finance Cllr.Mantsho Mathikge. This was howevera 30 second sound clip and all issuescould not be covered in 30 seconds.
SABC Motsweding FM then requestedto have a more comprehensive inter-view with the Executive Mayor, Cllr.Maphefo Mogale-Letsie.During this interview Credit Control
in all areas, the responsibility of con-sumers to pay for their accounts, thearrangements in place for the indigentin our community was discussed,” amunicipal spokesman indicated onTuesday.“The accounts for the registered in-
digent were written off during last ye-ar, and they are on new accounts cur-rently. Those who are not indigent andtherefore have the responsibility topay for their municipal accounts mustdo so.“The Merafong community, resi-
dents, businesses and government in-stitutions owes themunicipality a totalof R665 million.“Credit control and debt collection
done in terms of the Municipal CreditControl and Debt Collection Policy
which is derived from the MunicipalFinance Management Act, which is anAct of Parliament. Credit control is notimplemented in a specific area of Me-rafong City, it is implemented in allareas of Merafong City.“There is considerable pressure on
the municipality from the communityto improve services and service delive-ry. This can only be done if the commu-nity pays for the services they utilize.“The Credit Control and Debt Col-
lection Policy and the Municipal Fi-nance Management Act take due cog-nisance that there are indigent peoplein our communities who are providedfor. The indigents are provided forthrough a subsidy of six kilolitres ofwater and 50kwh of electricity. Unem-ployed people, pensioners, house-holds with a gross income of R 2 700-00 or below, which is double the statepension amount, can apply for indi-gent support,” the municipal spoke-sperson said.

director of the Free Market Foundati-on. We are now free politically. We havedemocracy.
But our economic freedom is extre-mely ignored by us.
For our own good we need to actnow. Those of us remaining entrepre-neurs who succeeded in the old regimehave not lost the appetite for support, nor our love and commitment to thiscountry. Despite this, the majority ofus stand aloof and do not support bu-sinesses run by blacks.
We believe in the potential of the yo-uth of the country, and that new cir-cumstances must be created to gene-rate our own Oppenheimers, GordonGates and JP Morgans. We must crea-te future business heroes. Such a futu-re is available. South Africa requiresa turnaround. I may have other opini-ons or suggestions, but I give my fullsupport to any effort driven by aspira-tions to start a business and create ajob for others.
Are you still looking for a job this ye-ar?
If you do not get any job placementswhat else would you be doing? Do youstill want to be frustrated as all yourprevious years of being employed? These questions need answers. Right, thinking of starting a business can beof advantage to you in this manner. Wedo not have to think of inventing so-mething new. We just need to open oureyes and copy success. It must be bor-ne in mind that employment is createdby entrepreneurs, those individualswho have a dream and are willing totake the risk. To understand the mindof the entrepreneur we need to placeability in the context of the businessmanagement process and align our-selves with modern trend of technolo-gy. In conclusion, the theme of this ar-ticle is entrepreneurship and why it isnot working very well for us in SouthAfrica. Why? We have been overtakenby non-South Africans. Why? We needto pay urgent attention before it is toolate, and do something to remedy a si-tuation which is out of control andchronic. “Let us do something”.
This is not a blame but a hint to pu-blic and private sector that if they canhear the side of ordinary citizens andhelp with startegies that will createavenues for the implementation of ide-as of intellectual property, the econo-my of our country will be highly sustai-nable. The public and private sectormust learn that less is more. We mustfree the economy, not strangle it. Befo-re 1994 the proportion of white toblack entrepreneurs was overwhel-mingly in favour of the white group, yetblacks were the majority in populati-on.
The principle, but not sole, culpritwas apartheid, a system of institutio-nalised discrimination which marga-nilised the black majority and exclu-ded them from economic opportuni-ties.
Simply stated, blacks were not allo-wed to compete for the rewards of ca-pitalism and free enterprise by lawswhich were aimed at limiting opportu-nities for blacks.
Since 1994, we (blacks) have not do-ne ourselves any favours in the econo-mic sphere.
The Government initiated the startof “free market or free enterprise sy-stem” which in real sense many of usignore and see people from outsideSouth Africa taking advantage of it. Ac-cording to the economic freedom ofthe world: 2014 (EFW) figures the glo-rious future the rainbow nation loo-ked forward to in 1994 appears to befading away.
“Since being ranked 41st in 2000among the top 40% of countries meas-ured in EFW, South Africa plummeteddown the index in both relative (rank)and absolute terms (rating). Now ran-ked at 93, South Africa has sunk intothe bottom 40% with score of 6.73 ona scale of 10, which is than the averageeconomic freedom score of the 152countries analysed.
After several years in second place,South Africa’s claim of being an Afri-can leader is tarnished as it now co-mes in at 8th place amongst the Afri-can countries,” said Eustace Davie, a
ting jobs and breed citizens that aredependent, passive and receptive. Letus stop thinking about being meretools of industry and commerce - letus “fit in” job creation initiatives thisyear. Our government, private sectoras well as financial resources(i.e.banks and public funded instituti-ons like IDC,NEF,NYDF, SEDA etc.)must scrap dysfunctional relations-hips of distrust to business ideas ouraspirant citizens usually come to thefore with. An idea can be small, but isworth tested through fundamentalanalysis by professional entities thatare appointed by public funded insti-tutions to create openings that canshape small ideas into big viable con-cerns. If this can be addressed, oureconomy will grow and our citizenswill fully participate in our economicgrowth.
Thabo Sekano
It is dishearting to see our young aspi-rant citizens loafing and roaming thestreets of towns and townships.
We tend to share the notion that get-ting employment from the corporateworld is the solution to success of ourlives. Now let us divert from being pas-sive, receptive and depend on handouts from the employment sector.Twenty fifteen(2015) must be declaredas a year of “turbocharging the econo-my by unleashing black entrepre-neurship”. It must be a year when wefit into the economy that includes his-torically disadvantaged individuals.Gone are the years when everybodyhad to shift blame to the government.Blaming, and blaming, and blamingusually gives birth to procrastinationthat eventually hinder us from crea-

Companies the world over can onlydream of having staff arrive at work aspunctually as a portulaca blooms in themorning time. Having said that, if staffmimicked these timely treasures, they’donly come into work on sunny days sothe “better late than never” trade-off isprobably worth it. More commonlyknown as moss-rose, portulaca’s nativeroots are in Argentina, southern Braziland Uruguay.Portulaca’s blooming good nature has
afforded it some interesting namesaround theworld from themore flexible“time fuul”whichmeans “time flower” inBangladesh to themoreprecise “nauba-jiya” meaning “9 o’clock flower” in Indiaand “hoam i gi ”meaning “teno’clockflower” in Vietnam. Plant up a few traysof these beauties within eyeshot of yourdesk and you won’t need to check the ti-me to see when your tea break is, excepton sunless days of course, so it’s proba-bly not wise to toss your desk clock outthe window. It’sprobablyobviousbynow thatwhat
these gorgeous treasures need is sun.Lots of it, in fact, the whole day long ifpossible. Luckily most gardens have
thosepatcheswherenotmuchgrowsbe-cause it gets too much sun, and the soilis not terribly fertile because of the ham-mering it gets from the unrelenting rays. This is theperfectplace foryourportula-ca, and the once desert looking patchwill turn intoa fiery colourpalettebeforeyou know it.It’s quite simple, just remember to
avoid areas with shade or waterloggedsoil and don’t worry if the soil is not richwithnutrientsbecause they’ll grow insa-ndy soils with practically no attention.Being water-wise little plants, keep thewater in the tap until it’s needed and trynot to pummel their soft leaves withhard overhead watering.Plant up your portulacas in rockeries,
hangingbaskets, pots, betweensteppingstones and even as a ground cover if thatis what you need.Their eye-catching colours will make
any of these areas impossible to miss. They are available in scarlet, orange andyellow for the bolder gardener or whiteand pastel shades for a more understa-ted feel. There is no need to dead-headportulacas, but giving them a good (fewinches) haircut in late summer whenthey get leggy will afford you anotherblooming burst in autumn. For themost
part, even thoughpeople find them ey-e-catching, luckilynot many pests sha-re our view. If youfind nematodes andaphids seem partialto your crop, plan-ting a couple of Ma-rigolds as compani-ons will act as a na-tural pest repellent. An added feature,
whichnotmanypeo-ple are aware of isthat they attractbees in their droves!Don’t get a fright ifyour flowers die af-ter the bees have vi-sited though becau-se it’s perfectly natu-ral for them to do soabout an hour afterpollination. The Merafong City Local Municipalityrecently shed more light on the pro-gress of thebridgebeingbuilt to ‘Khuts-ong Extension 5’ last week. The Herald asked questions about
the matter after a woman died after be-ing hit by a train on the section whereanewbridge is beingbuilt. If thebridge,on which work has been dragging forsome time, was completed, the womancould have used rather than walkingnear the dangerous railway line.According to amunicipal spokesper-
son the road bridge is currently in con-struction since the project was handedover to a contractor at the end ofMarch2014.Construction tookplace at the si-te establishment at the beginning of Ju-ne 2014.The bridge will establish a vehicle
and pedestrian link between the Khut-song townships presently divided bythe railway line and provincial road. This will provide a safe passage overboth road and rail. It will cut out ap-proximately 12km of commuter traveldistance for people in Khutsong.
The project is planned to be comple-ted by the end of July this year, not ta-king into account any justified extensi-on of time thatmay be granted in termsof the contract conditions. It will beopened after completion of all inspecti-ons, which includes the certificationprocess. The tenderwas awarded for an all-in-
clusive amount of about R159 million.All-inclusive alludes to provisions forcontingencies, VAT and the upgradingof the provincial road to a dual carria-geway for approximately 1kmon eitherside of the bridge. For residents in the new extensions
(south of the railway line) access to thecemetery north of the railway line willbe much easier. A detour via the Wel-verdiend level railway crossing will beavailable, thus effectively cutting travel-ling distance to the graveyard by ap-proximately 15km. It will also work fortaxi operators serving the communityfrom Khutsong to town and departingfrom the northern parts of Khutsongwho may prefer the “shorter” routeover the bridge thus cutting travellingtime for commuters. Such a route opti-
onwill conveniently pass the new shop-ping mall that is currently under con-struction; hence residents will have theconvenience of public transport availa-ble at the shops regardless of wherethey reside in Khutsong.
It will also no longer be necessary forlearners attending schools or residentswho need to access facilities to crossthe road and railway line at ground le-vel, thereby drastically reducing thepotential of fatalities.

TheCarletonville branch of the Interna-tional Organisation Alcoholics Anony-mous (AA) is ready to help those bat-tling this addiction in our community.According to one of the organisers of
the local branch, Nico Kotze, very fewpeople want to become alcoholics oraddicted to any substance by choice, but endup in the viciousdownwardspi-ral of addiction before they realise thatthey have a problem. What makes mat-tersworse is that for a long time alcoholhas seemedalmost like a rite of passageinto adulthood.“Excessive alcohol use is normally
preceded by a trigger or character de-fect. The most common of these arestress, group pressure, loneliness, lowself-esteem and many others,” Kotzetells.“The fact that alcohol is socially ac-
ceptable does not help to avoid thesepitfalls,” he adds. The AA has identified various types
of alcoholics. Unfortunately people canonly get help after they realise that alco-hol hasmade their lives unmanageable. If it is not addressed, alcoholism canlead to total ruin, with alcoholics some-times ending up in jail or institution oreven the mortuary.“At such a point, help to relieve the
agonising inability to regain control ofour lives is normally sought in variousplaces. I, for one, have found it at Alco-holics Anonymous,” Kotze told the He-rald this week.AA is a basic programme guiding al-
coholics back to a sober, honest andproductive lifestyle. The organisationwas founded in 1939 byBill Wilson andDr. Bob Smith, themselves alcoholics,in Akron, Ohio, in the USA. The organi-sation, which has a religious onslaught,
has through the years saved thousandsof people by teaching alcoholicsthrough the principles consisting of 12steps.Contrary to common belief, alcoho-
lism is a progressive disease for whichthere is no known cure. It is not boundto creed, colour, age, sex, religion orlack of religion, status, financial stan-ding or intelligence. Alcoholism canhappen to anybody who consumes it atany time.“With theAAprogrammeand theHig-
her Power, miraculous recovery is pos-sible. I am one of the recovered. As longas you are breathing, have the capacityto be honest with yourself and have awillingness to try, AA will change yourlife,” Kotze says.“The programme will enable you to
make sober decisions, steer your choi-ces and bring you to safe shores again.I am grateful to the AA for my sobriety,
whichmeans somuch tomy family andfriends. AA and the Higher Power havedone forme what I could not do formy-self.I came to theAA to get sober, butwhat
I received was my life.“If you have come to the point where
you are fed upwith yourself, have suffe-red enough ridicule and feel that yourlife has fallen apart because of alcohol,be bold and give the AA a try. You willexperience understanding, acceptance, guidance, honest advice and help. Why,you ask, is this given tome for free?Theanswer is simple. We got it for free, sowe give it away,” Kotze added.Peoplewhowant to get in contactwith

The Khutsong organisation that is de-termined to wage a war against drugsstarted in 2013 when the chairpersonand ex-convict from the Free State, Les-ley Khauoe (42) moved to the Gautengprovince.
He presently resides in Khutsong inwhich the facility, Masakhane YouthChristian Rehabilitation Centre, is ba-sed.
Khauoe had spent 18 years in prisonbefore initiating the organisation and, after he was arrested, he began thin-king of how he could repay the societyafter the crimes he had committed; andwhen he was released he formed agroup of six members, some of whomare also ex-convicts.
He is a former gang leader and he de-cided to change to become a personwho can strive for the betterment of yo-ung people. While in prison he was tou-ched by some of his peers who wouldvisit him in prison and was inspired by
their success. He became motivated tochange people’s lives because he didnot want to see young people repeatingthe same mistakes he made.
The group created a drama play thatwas based on social issues relating totheir own experiences regarding gang-sterism and drug abuse as well as im-prisonment to raise awareness in localschools. They have managed to securecontinual support from the executiveMayor, Maphefo Letsie and other coun-cillors to overcome certain challenges.
They educate young people about thedangers of having tattoos that are gang-related and which could subject themto ill-treatment if they are imprisoned. They began taking the project seriouslywhen they realised that they were lite-rally changing lives.
The organisation was then registeredafter noticing that there was no rehabcentres in the Khutsong township; andrehabilitation centres elsewhere arecostly, so they decided to go house-to-house to counsel and motivate drug
users. They also evaluate the conditi-ons of the users and refer them to betreated medically.
The organisation is based in Khuts-ong in Ext.3 at house 7044. The M.YChrist rehab centre, as they call it in ab-breviation, is always open for drugusers who are willing to change for thebetter as they offer hope and a warmplace.
The organisation will be hosting a cri-me-awareness event on 6 February atthe Khutsong Hall from 12:00-15:00,and all members of the Khutsong com-munity are invited. There will be moti-vational talks, performances, prayers, drama plays involving Tsitsiboga andMbulelo Primary Schools as well as acandle light session dedicated to thetwo girls who were brutally murderedin 2014.
The event aims to educate youngerkids about bad things before they reachhigh school, where they can become ea-sily and badly influenced to become dif-ferent people. The organisation would
like to appeal to all stakeholders andcommunity leaders to join hands tofight against crime including all politi-cal parties to forget about their affiliati-ons and work cohesively towards pro-tecting the community. The organisati-on is planning to establish a formalrehabilitation centre as a better soluti-on to reduce the substance abuse pro-blem. In the meantime their set-back isthe shortage of office equipment and apermanent working space. They havehelped seven young people and are cur-rently helping two young men to overco-me the drug challenge. They would alsolike to engage local doctors in their pro-grammes and businesses in Merafongare invited to help as they are operatingon no-budget and survive on handouts.Their major problem is transport andmeans of communication. The organi-sation can contacted on 081-890-0513/061-804-3861/084 222 0373 or byemail: john.lephuting3@gmail.com.
Their slogan is “Working in unity canchange the mindset of the society”.

A new community group from Khut-song is ready to assist vulnerable peo-ple in their community.
According to Ms Magdeline Tlhapi, the chairperson of the Tswirangwanacommunity group, the group was star-ted last year by members of the commu-nity who wanted to help the elderly andother vulnerable people who are ill. Thename “Tswirangwana” means “safetyfor our community” and the organisati-on, which is based in Khutsong’s Tswa-na Section, was officially registered asa non-profit organisation on 28 Julylast year.
“Mr Less Thumo, our director, wasonce in hospital and realised that manyof the patients need someone to helpthem to wash and take their tablets. Alt-
hough his wife went to help him everyday, many people do not have someonewho can assist them,” another member,Ms Magdeline Mohapi, explained.
Except for helping the elderly, thegroup also assists others such as thosesuffering from HIV or TB. Not only domembers go to the houses of patients, the patients also gather at the organisa-tion’s small hall at house No. 2890. He-re they do not only get an opportunityto get food with which to take their me-dication or relax with others, but alsotake part in activities such as informalsports.
They also sometimes assist the elder-ly and ill to get to and from clinics orother essential services.
They also want to extend their scopeto assist other in the community.
“We would like to hold church servi-
ces on Thursdays and would also liketo get a shelter for people who have now-here else to go and help people who aretraumatised. We would like to get ouryoung brothers and sisters involved inthe action and want to grow the projectto such an extent that it can maybe pro-vide jobs for other people,” says Thu-mo. He added that the group would alsolove to give birthday parties for old peo-ple who are 85 years or older.
“As old people we are having pro-blems with our feet which means thatit takes us much longer to get to the cli-nic and to fetch our pensions. We also
often need help with food and funerals,as there are often not enough people towork. Some of us also do not have chil-dren who can help us,” one of the elder-ly residents assisted by the group, 74-year-old Ms Bertha Legoete tells.
TheTswirangwanacommunity groupis currently the only group that assistsvulnerable people in Khutsong’s Tswa-na Section, as a previous group that didsimilar work stopped functioning.

An opposition party councillor is furi-ous after theMerafongCity LocalMuni-cipality wrongfully claimed that pro-blem street-light poles have alreadybeen fixed.Carlos Rebelo of the DA has been
complaining that there are no streetlights in the busy Coronation Street inCarletonville for about two years. To-wards the end of 2013 theMerafong Ci-ty Local Municipality eventually dugdeep holes in places where street lightswere missing and placed poles in theholes. No light heads were however fit-ted to the poles and the holes were notfilled.“The job was then abandoned and
three poles have since fallen into the ro-ad and the pavement. This could havecaused serious injuries or even deathsdue to car accidents,” Rebelo complai-ned to the newspaper last year Septem-ber.As a result of the problems, he offici-
ally askedquestions about theproblemduring the council meeting of 27 No-vember last year.Rebelo asked the municipality why
this project has not been completedand who will take responsibility if so-
meone is injured by this negligence.Rebelo also wanted a date by when
the project would be completed andwhy street names that were budgetedfor in 2013 have still not been put up.Healsowanted toknowwhathappenedwith the money for the budget.Great wasRebelo’s surprise when on
18 December he received written feed-back from the Acting Municipal Mana-ger, Mr LR Thibini, which indicatedthat the problem had already been at-tended to.According to the Acting Municipal
Manager, thematerial required to com-plete the project had to be re-orderedfrom the supplier as the wrong materi-al was supplied.“All the poles have been removed and
the unsafe conditions corrected. Holeswere filled up to cable entry pointsplus-minus 300mm from the top of thehole. Due to the time delay in comple-ting the project, one pole was bumpedover by a motor vehicle where thedriver lost control and the other poleswere dug openby vandals and the poleswere stolen. The holes had been filledup,” Thibini indicated in writing.“I cannot understand how the muni-
cipality can think that Iwouldbe so stu-pid not to come and check for myself
whether thework had actually been do-ne or not,” Rebelo told the Herald onMonday while pointing to one of theopen holes under the poles, which wasstill exactly the same as during thenewspaper’s last visit to the site in Sep-tember. None of the holes under the po-les in this area seemed to have been fil-led up as they were still deep with longgrass growths, which indicates a sub-stantial length of time since the holewas managed.According to Rebelo, he was furious
when he received the municipality’sreply as he often drives up and downCoronationStreet andhas not seen anywork being done on the poles in thearea. At the time of the newspapergoing to print it was still not sure whenthe work would actually be done.In his official response, the Acting
Municipal Manager indicated that theproject would be completed in April2015.He even thankedRebelo for brin-ging the issue under the municipality’sattention and indicated that the streetnames would be dealt with during thethird quarter of the 2015 financial year.“The DA calls on the municipal ma-
nager to actually visit ward 28 to see forhimself. The situation could be recti-fied immediately just by making the
area safe until the spare parts arrivethat are needed to complete the jobproperly,” Ina Cilliers, the DA’s Consti-tuency Head in Merafong, indicated..

Some residents of the Khutsong Hos-tel still have tomake dowithout someservices. The Herald reported in April last
year that people staying in this muni-cipal hostel often have to make do
without anywater.Water andsewage le-akages have also often been reported atthe facility. When the newspaper visited the hos-
tel, which is situated next to the Khuts-ong Fire Station, again in September, water was again streaming from the fa-cility. Last Friday some residents indi-
cated that they have still not gotten ac-cess to water since this time. One man, who did not want to be na-
med because he fears being victimisedby themunicipality, showed the Heraldhowhe had put buckets out to catch so-me rainwater with which to flush toi-lets.“We pay rent here every month but
we do not get services in return,” theman lamented. He showed the Herald how there is
no water whatsoever coming from thetaps in his section of the hostel. In themeantime, a huge water leak at theback of the building seemednot to havebeen touched since the Herald’s last vi-sit in September. In other places in the hostel water
was also leeching from broken pipes. While walking through the hostel
yard with a concerned communitymember, Mr Themba Wisani, the He-rald’s journalist saw a man who hadpreviously also complained scurryingaway.“He has been threatened not to speak
to the newspaper,” Wisani indicated.
Except for the water problems, thefoul smell of sewage also hang in theair and a large streamofwater leakedout of the facility into the direction ofthe Fire Station. Questions about thematter was sent to the Merafong CityLocalMunicipality onTuesday. Amu-nicipal spokesman indicated that thematters would be investigated.

Fast thinking by a group of mu-nicipal workers recently ensu-red that residents of parts ofCarletonville would not bestuck without water. As far as could be determi-
ned, a water pipe next to Blue-bell Street was discovered to beleaking at the beginning of lastweek. If the problem had been left
unattended, large parts of Car-letonville’s Extension 8 and 9would be stuck without water. The newspaper heard that
municipal employees workingon the problem decided tomake a plan when they realisedthat there were currently nospare pipes with which to fixthe problem. They remembered that unu-
sed pipes were still buried nextto the nearby Dolomite Streetand dug these up on 12 Janua-ry.The workers used the old pi-
pes to repair the pipeline and,as far as could be determined,
completed repair work to thedamaged pipeline on Monday.“Due to the closure of busi-
nesses over the festive season, the supply of pipes to themuni-cipal stores was interrupted.A pipe burst occurred in
Bluebell Street which neededurgent repairs in order to ensu-re the continued delivery of wa-ter services to the surroundingarea. One of the Water Services Fo-
remen took the initiative to digup a portion of a disused pipeli-ne in order to re-use a suitablepiece for the repair, rather thanto wait for the delivery of the pi-pe on back order. This is not normal procedu-
re but it ensured that the inter-ruption of water supply to theareawasminimised,” amunici-pal spokesperson respondedon questions about the matteron Tuesday.

Kusasalethu Gold Mine, owned by themining house, Harmony, was tempo-rarily closed during the past weekweek due to the death of a miner.Harmony indicated last week that
an employee was fatally injured on theevening of 13 January in an accidentat Kusasalethu. According to Harmo-ny, the accident occurred due to a “fallof ground”.Investigations into the accident have
been undertaken, and all the develop-ment operations at the mine had beenstopped by Management.Harmony’s Chief Executive Officer,
Graham Briggs and his managementteam, express their sincere condolen-ces to the families and colleagues ofthe deceased. This was not the only is-sue that came to light at the mine du-ring recentmonths. DuringDecember,Harmony indicated that it wanted tocut jobs at Kusasalethu.“Kusasalethu has not returned to
profitability after various setbacks.
We need to be both decisive andmind-ful in our actions so that we preservethe viability of thismine for several de-cades to come. Without these actions, this mine will not survive and thatwould in-deed be atragedyfor ourcompany, our em-ployees,our com-munitiesand ourcountry,”Briggs in-dicated.Accor-
ding to in-formation on the mining house’s web-site “Kusasalethu has consistently re-corded losses since September 2012.The mine recorded negative free cashflow of R392 million in the financialyear ended June 2014 and negativefree cash flow of R112million between
July andOctober 2014. This is despiteongoing improvement initiatives andcontinued investment in the mine (so-me R3.9 billion in capital since 2001)to improve the mine’s performance.

further, as have excessive stoppagesfor various reasons, including illegalmining activities.“The current situation is clearly un-
sustainable.Harmony’s intention is to restore
the mine to profitability in the fourth
quarter of the current financial yearand – in so doing – preserve as manyjobs as possible.
The new plan will entail mining lo-wer volumes at higher grades at a re-duced cost.“Kusasalethu has commenced a
Section 189 consultation process interms of the Labour Relations Act andwill seek to engage with representativeunions in evaluating various options. The parties will, over the next 60 dayconsultation period consider a num-ber of avoidance measures that mayinclude offering voluntary separationand, early retirement packages to em-ployees and seek to transfer as manyemployees as possible to vacanciesthat exist elsewhere in the company.Kusasalethu currently employs about6 300 people (including contractors),”Harmony indicated. In conclusion, Briggs reiterated
Harmony’s commitment to work withits social partners – government, uni-ons, employees and shareholders – inarriving to a sustainable solution.

Although the Gold Plant of Blyvooruit-zicht Gold Mine was sold towards theend of last year, many other problemsstill exist at the mine. The mine’s provisional liquidator,
Leigh Roering, told the Herald on Tues-day that the company, Randlord Invest-ments successfully bought Blyvoor’sGold Plant in December. In the meanti-me, there were also two companies thatexpressed interest in buying the rest ofmine.Although these potential buyers indi-
cated that they would like to re-open 5Shaft, this seems highly unlikely. By Tu-esday, none of the companies have alsocome up with the necessary money tobuy the mine.“The purchase of the mine is not so
easy because whoever buys it will alsohave to deal with the water currently be-ing pumped by Anglo Gold Ashanti. TheDepartment of Water Affairs is regularlychecking that the water pumped out isclean and theBlyvoor slimesdam is alsostill a big headache,” Roering told theHerald on Tuesday. This particular sli-mes dam has been identified as one ofthe biggest pollutants in the area becau-se loose dust blowing from it pollutesthe environment. The Herald reportedjust before theonset of the festive seasonthat a businessman from the Blyvoorarea, Paulo de Gouvea, paid for an inde-pendent company, Rayten EngineeringSolutions, to analyse dust samples ta-ken at several spots in the Blyvoor areato prove that the slimes dam is a polluti-on danger to residents. The results in-deed showed that pollution levels in theresidential area in Blyvoor are abovewhat is considered as safe by legislation. The concentration of dust that was
measured in theBlyvoor air in June andAugust last year exceeded the legislati-on’s standard for residential areas, butwere within the range permissible fornon-residential areas. In Septemberand October the condition was evenworse, with dust fallout concentrationseven exceeding the standard permissi-ble for non-residential areas.“There is still aR35million rehabilita-
tion fund that can be used to deal withthe rehabilitation of the dump,” Roeringtold the Herald on Tuesday. He addedthatmore light on whether themine canbe sold or not will be available in aboutten days time..
