The Digital Education Revolution• The DER is a Federal initiative. • Prime Minister Rudd promised

Children Yr 9 – 12 access to a computer.

• The laptop program is NSW DET’s implementation of that promise.

• Laptops will be rolled out each year to Yr 9 students

• By 2012, all students in Yrs 9 – 12 will have a laptop.

• The program also includes a high speed wireless network, laptops for staff, staff training and technical support.

What is happening

• Laptops have arrived • Issued to one Yr 9 class later this week to trial for

two weeks before remainder of Yr 9 issued• Theirs while at a State school• Theirs to keep after Yr 12• A limited number of rooms on the wireless

network. More will be added.• Some staff have laptops. More will be issued.• Laptop use in class from Week 3 of this Term.

Purpose The Digital Education - NSW Program aims to improve student learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. The NSW Department of Education and Training is providing students with a personal laptop on the expectation that they will make good decisions with regard to their personal use of technology. A Laptop User Charter must be signed and provided to the student’s school before the laptop will be issued. Students and parents/carers must carefully read this charter prior to signing it. Any questions should be addressed to the school and clarification obtained before the charter is signed. Laptop User Charter I have read the Laptop User Charter (version 09/1). I understand my responsibilities regarding the use of the laptop and the internet. In signing below, I acknowledge that I understand and agree to the Laptop User Charter. I understand that failure to comply with the Laptop User Charter could result in recall of the laptop and/or loss of access for home use. Who to get help from?

• Technical Service Officer (TSO) – will help resolve technical problems including hardware faults. Richard Norrie

• TSO – for passwords (school and portal), software usage and anything else associated with the laptops.

Our expectations

• Students will bring every day

• Laptops will be fully charged every night

• Aim to replace student diaries for Years 9 and 10. A digital diary will be trialled this year.

• Normal discipline procedures will be applied
