• In late 2012
a problem
was
discovered
with the
shaft of the
generator

• The extent and the consequences of
the problem were not apparent.
– The appropriate response was to:
• Shut down Cabras 3 to avoid further damage
• Establish a recovery plan
• Determine the cause
• Make sure that Cabras 4 is not affected
• Take immediate steps to bring Cabras 3 back
online as soon as possible
The Action Plan Is Underway
• The necessary dismantling of Cabras
3 has been completed
• Replacement of the cracked shaft is
underway
• An overhaul of the engine has
begun
• Completion of project is scheduled
for September 16th.

• The upper stator assembly weight = 59 tons.
Remove the Upper Rotor Disk
• Twenty-four (24) bolts connected the two rotor
disc halves.
• The rotor disc is attached to
the shaft connecting flange,
with another twenty-four (24)
bolts.

Next Steps
• Now that the generator is disassembled, the
connecting area of the two rotor disc
halves will be inspected for cracks and any
damage.
• After inspection and analysis, a
determination will be made whether a new
rotor disc will be needed.
• A full report of the findings will be made to
the PUC in late April
