Introduction

What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) ?

Desktop Workload(OS, Apps, Data)

4

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (or VDI) is an architectural model where a client OS runs in a server-based virtual machine

environment and interacts with the user via a network connection.

Infrastructure Considerations

Building the BaseWhat do I need to start?

Hardware required:One or two appropriately specified servers for the number of users required

Example: Preferably dual quad Nehalem or equivalent AMD based processorOptional: Second server purely for client VM’s16-32GB or more of RAMRAID 5 (preferably RAID 0+1) disk subsystem

One or more hardware clients (to the scale of the POC)

Software required –Windows Server 2008 R2 EnterpriseWindows 7 Add System Center Virtual Machine Manager for improved VM management

Infrastructure RequirementServer Components:-

Active DirectoryRemote Desktop Services roles should install using Windows Server 2008 R2Digital CertificateVirtualization of RDS roles supported !

Client components:-Thin or rich clientInternet Explorer 6 or laterRemote Desktop Connection client version 6.1Reliable network connection

Guest VM Considerations

Delivering the Virtual Desktop Image

Static (“Persistent/Person

al”)Virtual Desktops

Dynamic (“Non-Persistent”)

Virtual DesktopsProfile Virtualization

(Roaming Profiles, Folder Re-direction)

Application Virtualization

(Streamed Apps)

Presentation Virtualization(Hosted Apps)

Static Virtual Desktop Requirement • Schema must be Windows Server 2008• Domain functional level should be Windows

2000 Server native mode

Static Virtual Desktop Requirement

Static / Personal Virtual Desktop

Virtual Desktop Pool

• VM name must be in FQDN format
