California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTPs):

California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTPs):

What is Induction?

• A two-year program of professional development aligned with the California Standards for the Teaching Profession, the State-adopted academic content standards for students and Induction Standards.

• Application and synthesis of knowledge and skills acquired in professional preparation.

• Integrated support and formative assessment system leading to an Individual Induction Plan.

• Pathway from a Preliminary Teaching Credential to a Professional Clear Teaching Credential.

• BTSA – Basics

Description The California Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) Induction Program provides formative assessment, individualized support and advanced content for newly-credentialed, beginning teachers, and is the preferred pathway to a California Clear Teaching Credential.

History of BTSA • Co-sponsored by The California Commission on Teacher

Credentialing (CCTC) and The California Department of Education (CDE)

• Uses the Formative Assessment for California Teachers (FACT) which identifies, in relation to the CSTP, the areas of prior development and needed further growth in teaching. The teacher with support of a trained Support Provider, develops an Individual Induction Plan (IIP) to improve teaching practice and increase student achievement.

• Completion of an induction program leads to a Professional Credential, which is renewable every 5 years.

History of BTSA

• It is the intent of the CCTC that every new teacher receive instruction and support so that they become fully credentialed educators.

• The Learning to Teach Continuum programs provide opportunities for teachers to deepen their knowledge about teaching and learning, leading to quality instruction for the students of California.

Where did you begin?

• Take a few minutes at your table to discuss what path you took along the Learning to Teach System?

• Person with the closest birthday to today begins.

California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP)

• The CSTP became the cornerstone of the BTSA projects, guiding the design and implementation of The Formative Assessment of California Teachers (FACT) as well as the work of the SP’s and the professional growth of the PT’s. The original CSTP’s were adopted in 1997 and revised in 2009 and are an important and central document for educational reform.

California Standards for the Teaching Profession

• The CSTP’s are the foundational pieces of the BTSA Induction program. Standards are one of the three essential components of the assessment system.

– Think about some of the things you believe

teachers should know and be able to do.

– Jot down 3 - 4 items on separate post it notes.

CSTP’s - con’t

• Turn to the back page of your CSTP booklet to the standards placemat.

• Sort the post-its and place them on the standard box, on the standards placemat, that you think is most appropriate.

• At your table, share any insights or comments. 1. Were there certain standards in our group that

seemed to get more post-it notes than others?

2. Are there some standards that received significantly fewer post-it notes?

Continuum of Teaching Practice

• The Continuum of Teaching Practice is a tool for self –reflection, goal setting and inquiry into practice. It provides common language about teaching and learning and can be used to promote professional growth within an environment of collegial support.

Continuum of Teaching Practice

• The Continuum is organized to describe five levels of development. Each level addresses what a teacher should know and be able to do in the six CSTP standards.

• Turn to page 5 & 6 –Look at different descriptions of levels.

–Discuss in your table groups the differences in the levels.

Continuum of Teaching Practice

– THIS YEAR: • You will go through the Continuum with your

support provider and do a self assessment.

• Year 1 - During FACT: Assessment of Teaching

• Year 2: Participants will continue with the Continuum Self Assessment immediately along with Context for Teaching.

Why Formative Assessment?

• To focus and direct the participating teacher’s growth

• To guide the work of the support provider

• To establish professional norms of inquiry into and reflection upon practice

• To reinforce the key role of assessment in developing effective instructional practice.

Foundations of FACT

• California Standards for the Teaching Profession • Induction and Program Standards • Content Standards and California Frameworks • Evidence and Data Collection • Collaborative Relationships • Plan, Teach, Reflect and Apply • Observations – at least 2 per year • Examining Student Work • Reflective Conversations • Self Assessment using Continuum of Teaching
