SH IPSMetropolitan Press Advise Matsuoka To Use Caution and Mature Deliberation to Confer With Rome-Berlin on International Outlook

TOKYO, Mar. 12 The successful conclusion o f the To­kyo Mediation Conference, settling the Thailand-French In- do-China border dispute shared the editorial spotlight in this morning’s metropolitan press with tonight’s departure of Foreign Minister Matsuoka on a visit to the Axis capitals.

Leading metropolitan dailies discerned heavy significan­ce of these two developments. Stating that these events showed Japanese diplomacy to be “ active and healthy,” the influential Asahi Shimbun, however, hoped for cautious and mature deliberation in Matsuoka’s activities in Rome and Berlin.

“ Inasmuch as rumors indicate impending aggravation of the European conflict, it is to be expected that the trip will arouse various world-wide speculations. Therefore, it goes without saying that it is widely hoped that these envoys to distant lands will not run counter to this imperial mission by acting only after calm and mature deliberation, the Asahi Shimbun stated.

N E W Y O R K , Mar. 12— The A s ­sociated Press yesterday quoted experienced observers in Saigon as being o f the opinion that Japan was not planning a forcefu l ad­vance on Sigapore or the Dutch East Indies in the near future.

The Saigon dispatch added that it is being reported that Japan was not asking im m ediate conces­sions in Thailand or Indo-China as the result o f mediation.

The Associated Press report fu r­ther added that “ m a jority opinion o f observers says that the Japa­nese desire to gain face as Far- Eastern peacem aker apparently had som ething to do w ith Japanese m ediation and the principal aims now appear to he fo r im provem ent o f Japan’s economic position.”

The formal signing- o f the peace treaty between French Indo-China and Thailand, with Japan acting as mediator, has been accomplished after a conference which lasted over a month at Tokyo. From Japan’s standpoint, this is being hail­ed as a notable achievement in Nippon’s diplomatic history, proving to the rest o f the world that she has carried out her boast that she is master of the Far East and its destiny, bringing peace between warring countries in her pursuit of the goal o f common prosperity among nations in East Asia, thus paving a way for the creation of a New Order in the Far East. To the rest of the world, now that the Franco-Thailand dispute is a closed issue, with only the possibility of a one­sided economic treaty giving Nippon too great a foothold in the countries involved in the recent border dispute, in parti­cular, and also in those countries in their immediate neigh­borhood to watch over, the possibility of an immediate blow­up of international relations on the Asiatic stage with Japan on one side with the democracies of the West on the other seems to have subsided a great deal.

This situation again brings the eyes and ears of the world upon the western hemisphere and Europe. The Axis powers in particular are watching for the immediate result o f the passage of the Lend-Lease Bill in Congress, with par­ticular emphasis on the President’s next move in his endea­vor to go to an “ all out” assistance of England, first, and the

These flu colds are treacherous. She ought to stay home from work for two or three days.”

Rosalou allowed her m other to fuss over her for a while, then closed her eyes. She pretended that she was asleep, hoping that M ary would go tip toeing away.

However, the latter was not fooled. “ Y ou ’re not asleep, Rosie,” the said, presently. “ And Dad wants to come ih and talk to you a minute.”

TH ERE was nothing Rosalou could do but consent. She knew

that her fa th er would be in a d if­ferent mood this m orning— would be apologetic fo r his anger.

She was right.He touched her hot cheek. “ I —

f’m sorry, Rosie. I guess I made kind o f a mess o f things last n ight.”

She smiled wanly. “ I t ’s all right. I feel just as I said last night. I — I hadn’t any business going to that party. You won’t need to worry any fnore. I ’ll not see Jerry Thom as again.”

Tom Blake came out o f the room feeling happier. “ M aybe it wasn’t such a bad idea, a fter all, going after her last night,” he said to his wife. “ Seems to have taught her a lesson. I th ink she sees things our way now.”

But M ary Wasn’t so sure.

“ Y ou ’re just in tim e fo r dinner,” Tom Blake told ihe younger man. “ M ary here has cooked corned beef and cabbage, though I don’t reck­on a young fe llow like you cares much for that kind o f fodder.”

“ D on ’t I, though !” Hugh said. “ And I don’t m ind te lling you that I rather hoped you ’d ask me to stay. A fte r dinner, I ’ve got some­th ing to tell you.”

I t was a jo lly meal. I t was nice to have Rosalou down w ith the fam ­ily again, and Hugh was good com ­pany. Tom liked him very much, and the boys adored him.

A fte r dinner, he waited until M ary had put A1 and B ert to bed before telling his news.

Then, he announced proudly, “ I ’m being transferred to the Chi­cago m ill— am scheduled to leave here in about two weeks. Th e pro­m o tio n 's wonderful. I ’ll be th ird in charge there.”

As he glanced over a t Rosalou, she sensed what was coming.

Tom shook his hand cordially. “ Congratulations! I like to see a young fe llow getting ahead. You deserve this, H u gh !”

“ In a way, I ’m sorry,” Hugh said slowly, still looking at Rosalou. “ I don ’t mean about m oving. The Chicago m ill is much larger than the one here, and I hope to be in charge there some day. I t ’s just that I — well, I hate to leave Rosa­lou w ithout having things settled. I ’d— I ’d rather give up the prom o­tion than— than------ ” He stopped.

Somehow, it seemed to Rosalou that she liked him more that m in ­ute than she had ever liked him before. He suddenly seemed like an old and true friend going out o f her life.

“ M aybe,” she said, in a voice that she scarcely recognized as her own, “ maybe things could be set­tled.”

“ R os ie !” Hugh exclaim ed eager­ly. “ I — well, I thought i f you would go along, it would be the most won­derfu l th ing that ever happened!I— I thought I ’d ask you ”

“ I w ill go along, Hugh,” she an­swered simply.

Suddenly, the way seemed very clear to her. M arry Hugh and go to Chicago. Away from all this, away from Jerry Thomas, maybe she could fo r g e t . . . .

Greatly encouraged by this experiment, the offiicals now are urging the farmers to grow more cotton plants next year, not only to make their work clothes, but also to sell surplus quantities to other prefectrues, where the farmers are suf­fering from an acute shortage of cotton goods.

TILLAM OOK, Ore A check here reveals that 17 mem­bers of a Civilian Conservation Camp, disbanded two years ago, have returned from their native Rhode Island to make their homes in Oregon. Several of the boys have married lo­cal girls and all o f them are employed, the survey showed.

CHICAGO, Mar. 12— Warfare from the skies was fore­seen centuries ago in China, according to a book written by the late Dr. Berthold Laufer, formerly of the Field Museum of Chicago, and published by the Museum Press in 1928.

The book, “ The Prehistory of Aviation,” describes a “ flying chariot,” designed by a Chinese mechanic, Ki-kung. The Chinese emperor at that time, however, “ caused the air­ship to be destroyed, as he did not wish his own people to see it.”

Centuries later in 1670 the Jesuit, Francesco Lana, after planning a similar flying machine, published the best reason why the early Chinese machine was destroyed.

“ I do not see any other difficulty that could prevail ag­ainst this invention,” Lana wrote, “ save. . . . that God will never permit such a machine to be constructed, in order to preclude the numerous consequences which might disturb the civil and political government among men. For who sees not that no city would be secure from surprise attacks, as the airship might appear at any hour directly over its market- square and would land there its crew?

“ The same would happen to private houses and to ships crossing the sea. . . . Even without descending, it could hurl iron pieces which would capsize the vessel and kill men, and the ships might be burnt with artificial fire, balls and bombs.”

tourney favorites lost out to the strong Maui Boxing team 17-10 in the 4-IAAF Boxing championship tourney at Lanai Cit$\

Fred Silvano and Joseph Gumpher did not fail the local fans as the pair copped their respective title impressively. But Tommy Morita was the big disappointment as he lost put in the semi-finals to Tetsuo Tanaka of Lanai. This de­partment thought that i f Hawaii had one fighter who had a chance to cop the title, he would be Morita.

Maybe Morita was o ff form, maybe he waited too long—his bad habit and started out too late, or maybe Morita wasjust o ff night, anyway the fact remains that he lost his fight. Now it would take a good fighter, yes a darn good fighter, to beat the Tommy Morita we know. Tanaka after de- cisioning Morita, it was reported, got a boxing lesson from Maui’s Takeshi Murayama.

Another fighter who failed to come through was John Torres. He was eliminated in the semi-finals by Tommy Ha- segawa of Maui, who went on to win the title. Hasegawa, a former Wainaku boy, fought here last year as a featherwei­ght.

Although losing it was reported that Esteban Bibilone and Joe Park gave their opponents a whale of a battle. Bibi­lone lost to Murayama who later copped the flyweight title, while Park lost out to Shigeo Wasano o f Maui.

Perhaps the most impressive Hawaii boxer was Jo- ' seph Gumpher. Gumpher after losing a decision to

Philip Lizares in a recent dual meet came right back to knockout the later in the titular bout. In the semi-finals

he kayoed A. Pelago of Maui. Because of his fine showing in the 4-IAAF, Joe Gumpher is looked upon to go far in the coming territorials.

Fred Silvano, classy featherweight king, proved himself too good a boxer for the Maui lads as he won all his bouts by a wide margin. Whether he can cleverly outbox much more experienced fighters of Honolulu will be known in the ter­ritorial championships. I f he can, he’ll cop the title, i f not— well we’ll just wait and see.

The Big Island missed out in the bantamweight and wel­terweight divisions. I f Joe Ayala and Freddie Ledesma had gone to the tourney and copped their respective titles, the outcome of the meet would have been a different story. In the fights here both amateurs won over the Maui champions. Ayala was detained because of work, while Ledesma, now in Honolulu, was supposed to join the team in Lanai, but for some unknown reason he did not make a showing.

Every fighter on the Maui squad deserves a good tap on the back for their fine showing in the 4-IAAF tourney. A fter dropping the dual smoker to Hawaii on February 22, the Val­ley Islanders came right back to atone their previous defeat.Guess it’s just MAUI NO KA 01.

From the East comes word that Foreign Minister Yosuke Matsuoka, iron man of Japan at present ,is leaving Tokyo en- route to Berlin and Rome to confer with Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini, with a possible stopover also in Moscow to chat with Joseph Stalin, head of the USSR. The coming con­ference o f Axis leaders in Europe may be taken as a meeting

- o f the totalitarian powers to decide the future course of the Axis nations in view of the certainty o f increased U. S. as­sistance to England and other powers aligned on the side of the democracies. Word has already been given to the world that President Franklin Roosevelt may visit England, where he is expected to hold conferences with both Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England, and the English crown heads.

Two memorable events have become history, namely, the passage of the U. S. Lend-Lease Bill and the Franco-Thailand peace in the Far East. The American people, through their representatives in Congress, have bestowed upon their pre­sident emergency powers which make the U. S. president the equal o f any of the Axis leaders, be he the Japanese foreign minister, Adolph Hitler, Mussolini or Stalin. Actually, de­spite all the limitations put on the Lend-Lease mea'sure, but with the entire resources of the wealthiest nation at his com­mand to a large degree, President Roosevelt will be able to wield a much greater influence than the leaders o f the Axis powers.

Everything points to the fact that the world situation, divided between the Axis powers on one side and the demo­cracies on the other, has come to a definite focus. Out of the prospective visits of Yosuke Matsuoka, Japan’s aggres­sive minister, to the European Axis capitals, and President franklin Roosevelt’s planned visit in the immediate future to the English capital, should come further crystalization of the entire world situation, thus bringing the day closer when powers on both sides will be obliged to work for a negotiated peace or ciecide the issues at stake in a warfare never known before in the history of mankind.

Momentous events are in store for the entire world dur­ing the next six months. The giants ,of the universe have giv­en notice that they will start upon their journeys and when they return, the world will hear from them in no uncertain terms.

weekend. H aw a ii boxers w inning the championships w ere Fred S il­vano and Joseph Gumpher in the featherw eigh t and m iddleweight divisions.

Colorfu l Fred Silvano o f H aw a ii won an impressive decision over Shigeo W asano o f Maui in the t i ­tular scrap. I t was Silvano’s c lev­er boxing tactics that kept W asa­no a t bay throughout the fu ll three rounds.

Gumpher W ins Philip L izares o f Maui lost his

m iddleweight crown to Joseph Gumpher. Gumpher knocked out the champ in the third round a fter tw o minutes and 5 seconds o f toe- to-toe slugging.

Takeshi M urayam a o f Maui showed too much class fo r Tetsuo Tanaka o f Lanai as the form er easiy outpointed his opponent to cop the flyw e igh t crown.

Tom m y H asegaw a o f M aui scor­ed a clean knockout over Jack N eri o f Lanai in one minute and 45 seconds o f the firs t round in the titu lar ligh tw eigh t bout.

In the bantam w eight scrap R i­chard Tran ilo o f M aui came back strong a fte r being floored to knock out his opponent Carl He- rolaga o f Lanai to garner the championship.

The w e lterw eigh t title was won by Yoshio Enem oto o f M aui over Dionicio Tesoro also o f Maui. Ene­moto also holds a v ic to ry over T e ­soro in the Maui championships.
