LEADING JAPANESE DAILY ON ISLAND OF HAWAII WE PUBLISH LOCAL AND WORLD’S LATEST HAPPENINGS HILO, HAWAII, T. H., WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 1941 South Point Area Good Farming* Land MARCH 15 IS DEADLINE TO FILE RETURNS LEGISLAflVJt SIDELIGHTS Harvey Vollrath, county agent for the agricultural extension ser- vice, pointed out £hat the Kama- oe homestead area around South Point airport as being an excel- lent vegetable growing land. He further stated that the soil there is very fertile and especially root crops grow well there. The only setback there is the need of water which could possibly be ob- tained from the higher section, he declared. So far papaias, carrots, toma- toes, and peanuts have been suc- cessfully produced there. Deputy collector of internal revenue, Kay Chang, announced that his office will open till mid- night on Saturday, March 15th, the deadilne for filing federal income tax returns. The full hearted cooperation of the public is asked by Mr Chang in order to lessen last minute rushes. Any further information in re- gard to tax returns can be ob- tained from the collector’s of- fice by calling by phone or in person. Both the morning and evening dailies seem to have picked up quite a bit of steam for a dras- tic change in the police system for the Big Island of Hawaii, the former predicting that the House members will be beaten in- to line in short order, while the evening daily keeps harping on the recent brawl which happened at the Athens Club, a local “hot drink” dispensing place. If such an unwarranted attack were made upon the uptowners by the beach boys down Keaukaha way as men- tioned in the afternoon daily’s edi- torial again yesterday, it surely seems strange that so far no com- plaints have been lodged against these boys that “walked all over” the good fellows from the down- town district. There is no excuse for such a fight in any place, but to blame the police for something that the victims fail to formally complain to the police surely seems a little out of line, don’t you think? Unless the brawl occurred right before the eyes of the police, even policemen are bound to fol- low the law of arrests. Those of you who were injured, either phy- sically or mentally, have the pro- found sympathy of this here hum- ble fourth estate entertainer, but how about making your com- plaints with the proper authorities and then crab if there is no action taken ? While you’re going after the police, why not give the pub- lic an earful of exactly what hap- pened the other night before a court of law? HAS ENOUGH PERSONNEL TO MAN ENTIRE U. S. SHIPS Metropolitan Press Advise Matsuoka To Use Caution and Mature Deliberation to Confer With Rome-Berlin on International Outlook TOKYO, Mar. 12 The successful conclusion of the To- kyo Mediation Conference, settling the Thailand-French In- do-China border dispute shared the editorial spotlight in this morning’s metropolitan press with tonight’s departure of Foreign Minister Matsuoka on a visit to the Axis capitals. Leading metropolitan dailies discerned heavy significan- ce of these two developments. Stating that these events showed Japanese diplomacy to be “active and healthy,” the influential Asahi Shimbun, however, hoped for cautious and mature deliberation in Matsuoka’s activities in Rome and Berlin. “Inasmuch as rumors indicate impending aggravation of the European conflict, it is to be expected that the trip will arouse various world-wide speculations. Therefore, it goes without saying that it is widely hoped that these envoys to distant lands will not run counter to this imperial mission by acting only after calm and mature deliberation, the Asahi Shimbun stated. LONDON, Mar. 11—With the Lease-Lend 'Bill becoming law today with Presiednt Roosevelt’s signature, a high British naval officer, declaring to the press that the battle in the Atlantic has just begun, asserted that Great Britain has enough trained person- nel to man the whole United States fleet if it were turned over to Britain. He said that Britain wanted all the ships from America that Great Britain could get and point- ed out that the start of the bat- tle in the Atlantic was evidenced by intensified submarine warfare, as well as attack by air on British shipping and Britain's counter measure. It was also declared that surface raiders are less problems to British shipping than submarine bombers. It was also added that while Britain was grateful for the transfer of fifty U. S. destroyers, Great Britain would be more bene- fited by destroyers better equip- ped for anti-submarine and anti - aircraft wai’fare such as modern warships must face. It was said that immediately af- ter the signing of the Tri-Partite Treaty, it was Foreign Minister Matsuoka’s intention to make the visit to both Rome and Berlin, but urgent matters held him back to this day. HANOI, Mar. 12— Expressing gratification over the amicable conclusion of the mediation confer- ence in Tokyo, due to mutual con- ciliation and concessin on the part of both France and Thailand, Ma- jor General Raishiro Sumita, chair- man of the Japanese Military Mis- sion, said that he was filled with emotion to review developments of the situation during the past mon- “Japan, as the mediator power, believes the terms of mediation now accepted by France and Thai- land as being absolutely fair and just; therefore she must see that those terms will be strictly observ- ed in order to live up to the spi- rit of peace concluded between the two countries,” Sumita said, add- ing “I trust France will cooperate with Japan as closely as ever by understanding Japan’s peace-lov - ing intentions in the correct li- ght.” The afternoon daily publishes an account where the “boss” of the sheet has gone over to the FBI people to make investigations of the beach-boys vs. up-towners fi - ght of Sunday night. Cortez Be Able to Save Ramirez EDITORIAL, GIANTS ON THE MOVE The formal signing- of the peace treaty between French Indo-China and Thailand, with Japan acting as mediator, has been accomplished after a conference which lasted over a month at Tokyo. From Japan’s standpoint, this is being hail- ed as a notable achievement in Nippon’s diplomatic history, proving to the rest of the world that she has carried out her boast that she is master of the Far East and its destiny, bringing peace between warring countries in her pursuit of the goal of common prosperity among nations in East Asia, thus paving a way for the creation of a New Order in the Far East. To the rest of the world, now that the Franco-Thailand dispute is a closed issue, with only the possibility of a one- sided economic treaty giving Nippon too great a foothold in the countries involved in the recent border dispute, in parti- cular, and also in those countries in their immediate neigh- borhood to watch over, the possibility of an immediate blow- up of international relations on the Asiatic stage with Japan on one side with the democracies of the West on the other seems to have subsided a great deal. This situation again brings the eyes and ears of the world upon the western hemisphere and Europe. The Axis powers in particular are watching for the immediate result of the passage of the Lend-Lease Bill in Congress, with par- ticular emphasis on the President’s next move in his endea- vor to go to an “all out” assistance of England, first, and the (Continued on Page Four) With Francisco Cortez’ claim of Victoriano Cortez Ramirez as son proving fruitless, two hopes, Andrew Cortez’ claim as being a half-brother to Ramirez ' and Belbarde of Hilo claiming that a family by the name of Ruano, now believed to be living in Mt. E D I T O R I A L ,GIANTS ON THE MOVE

The formal signing- o f the peace treaty between French Indo-China and Thailand, with Japan acting as mediator, has been accomplished after a conference which lasted over a month at Tokyo. From Japan’s standpoint, this is being hailed as a notable achievement in Nippon’s diplomatic history, proving to the rest o f the world that she has carried out her boast that she is master of the Far East and its destiny, bringing peace between warring countries in her pursuit of the goal o f common prosperity among nations in East Asia, thus paving a way for the creation of a New Order in the Far East. To the rest of the world, now that the Franco-Thailand dispute is a closed issue, with only the possibility of a onesided economic treaty giving Nippon too great a foothold in the countries involved in the recent border dispute, in particular, and also in those countries in their immediate neighborhood to watch over, the possibility of an immediate blowup of international relations on the Asiatic stage with Japan on one side with the democracies of the West on the other seems to have subsided a great deal.

This situation again brings the eyes and ears of the world upon the western hemisphere and Europe. The Axis powers in particular are watching for the immediate result o f the passage of the Lend-Lease Bill in Congress, with particular emphasis on the President’s next move in his endeavor to go to an “ all out” assistance of England, first, and the

! Rosalou Blake, factory girl, aand Jerry Thomas, dance-hall singer, fa ll in love, but her paren ts disapprove o f Jerry and fcause a m isunderstanding betw een them. W hen Hugh Me M asters, a supervisor at the fa c tory , proposes to her, her parents u rge her to accept him, but she refuses. Meanwhile, Jerry has been given a radio contract. H op ing that his success may help h im to win Rosalou, he starts tak ing her out again but, when she meets some o f his smart new friends, she feels shabby and out o f place. In particular, the beautifu l Constance Garvely treats her w ith contempt and tries to take Jerry away from her. A t a party given by Constance, she is snubbed and has a very unhappy time. She has lied to her parents, but her father learns she’s out w ith Jerry, traces her to the party and angrily takes her home. W hen Jerry follows them, she tells him that her father is right— that she doesn’t belong in his new circle o f sophisticated friends and that she doesn’t want to see him again.

lou, w ith trem bling fingers, opened the box. M ary guessed that it was from Jerry, because an offering from Hugh — a lovely quilted silk dressing gown — had come that morning.

Rosalou tore open Jerry ’s note, quickly read it.

Dearest, I love you. W on ’t you please telephone or write me? I am so unhappy, and love you so much. I must see you. Jerry.

His fervency touched Rosalou’s heart, but did not affect her decision. She had made up her mind.

Her m other turned from the ta ble. “ M y! Those are the prettiest roses I ever saw ! ”

“ Put them downstairs in the liv ing room,.” Rosalou said. “ I want all o f you to en joy them .”

M ary obeyed. She knew that this was her daughter’s way o f getting the flowers where sight o f them would not rem ind her o f Jerry.

A fter her mother had le ft the room, Rosalou climbed out o f bed, slipped into the quilted robe, and went over to her desk.

H er note to Jerry was very brief:

SHE PROTESTS— Mrs. Elizabeth Dilling of Chicago, author of "The Red Network," arrested in Washington when she protested against lend-lease bill with other v/omen outside Senate chamber. She said she represented "Mothers' Crusade."

President lioosevelt's pet Scuttle, Falla, named after one of the President’s ancient ancestors, begs from Thomas Qualters, Presi

TW O FROM ONE— High explosive bomb dropped by Nazi flier on Sheffield, England, hit this tramcar and cut it in iw o. Bomb also dug crater in street. British censor did not give casualties.

CH APTER X X I EDOSALOU was ill the next

day.Her mother, pattering into

her room in the early morning, found the girl burning with fever.

“ Y ou ’ve caught a terrible cold,” M ary B lake scolded, wanting to pet Instead o f scold, but not knowing exactly how. “ These silly modern evening dresses! But they ’re pretty. I don’t blame you for buying one, honey. You needed an evening flress.”

Rosalou turned her face to the wall so that M ary wouldn’t see the tears in her eyes. She didn’t want to hear that note o f sympathy in her m other’s voice.

Tom Blake insisted that M ary call the doctor. He was suffering from remorse this morning, regretting his hasty action o f the night before. Tom was like that— he acted first and thought second, i W hen the doctor came, he said there was nothing wrong with Rosalou except a severe cold. “ Keep her in bed, Mrs. Blake. These flu colds are treacherous. She ought to stay home from work for two or three days.”

Rosalou allowed her m other to fuss over her for a while, then closed her eyes. She pretended that she was asleep, hoping that M ary would go tip toeing away.

However, the latter was not fooled. “ Y ou ’re not asleep, Rosie,” the said, presently. “ And Dad wants to come ih and talk to you a minute.”

TH ERE was nothing Rosalou could do but consent. She knew

that her fa th er would be in a d ifferent mood this m orning— would be apologetic fo r his anger.

She was right. He touched her hot cheek. “ I —

f’m sorry, Rosie. I guess I made kind o f a mess o f things last n ight.”

She smiled wanly. “ I t ’s all right. I feel just as I said last night. I — I hadn’t any business going to that party. You won’t need to worry any fnore. I ’ll not see Jerry Thom as again.”

Tom Blake came out o f the room feeling happier. “ M aybe it wasn’t such a bad idea, a fter all, going after her last night,” he said to his wife. “ Seems to have taught her a lesson. I th ink she sees things our way now.”

But M ary Wasn’t so sure.

RO SALO U stayed in bed fo r several days but, even a fter her

fever was gone, she remained spiritless and wan.

“ You must remember that she had that accident a while back,” the doctor told M ary. “ She hasn’t completely recovered from the e f fects o f that, and flu colds are mighty weakening to the system. Don’t worry — she’s getting along ill right.”

Just the same, M ary was almost glad when the note from Jerry came. It came with a huge box o f Am erican Beauty roses.

M ary pretended to be busy at a table across the room when Rosa-

Thank you fo r the lovely flowers, hut please don’t send any more. Our friendship has been a mistake. I m eant exactly what I said the other n igh t. Please don’t try to see me again.

Just that. But when M ary came back into the room, she found that, for no apparent reason, the g ir l’s tem perature had gone up again.

HO W EVER, not even flu colds can keep healthy young girls

in bed forever. Rosalou was up in a few days, and was planning to go back to work the next day.

It was that evening that Hugh McMasters dropped in shortly before dinner.

“ Y ou ’re just in tim e fo r dinner,” Tom Blake told ihe younger man. “ M ary here has cooked corned beef and cabbage, though I don’t reckon a young fe llow like you cares much for that kind o f fodder.”

“ D on ’t I, though !” Hugh said. “ And I don’t m ind te lling you that I rather hoped you ’d ask me to stay. A fte r dinner, I ’ve got someth ing to tell you.”

I t was a jo lly meal. I t was nice to have Rosalou down w ith the fam ily again, and Hugh was good com pany. Tom liked him very much, and the boys adored him.

A fte r dinner, he waited until M ary had put A1 and B ert to bed before telling his news.

Then, he announced proudly, “ I ’m being transferred to the Chicago m ill— am scheduled to leave here in about two weeks. Th e prom o tio n 's wonderful. I ’ll be th ird in charge there.”

As he glanced over a t Rosalou, she sensed what was coming.

Tom shook his hand cordially. “ Congratulations! I like to see a young fe llow getting ahead. You deserve this, H u gh !”

“ In a way, I ’m sorry,” Hugh said slowly, still looking at Rosalou. “ I don ’t mean about m oving. The Chicago m ill is much larger than the one here, and I hope to be in charge there some day. I t ’s just that I — well, I hate to leave Rosalou w ithout having things settled. I ’d— I ’d rather give up the prom otion than— than------ ” He stopped.

Somehow, it seemed to Rosalou that she liked him more that m in ute than she had ever liked him before. He suddenly seemed like an old and true friend going out o f her life.

“ M aybe,” she said, in a voice that she scarcely recognized as her own, “ maybe things could be settled.”

“ R os ie !” Hugh exclaim ed eagerly. “ I — well, I thought i f you would go along, it would be the most wonderfu l th ing that ever happened!I— I thought I ’d ask you ”

“ I w ill go along, Hugh,” she answered simply.

Suddenly, the way seemed very clear to her. M arry Hugh and go to Chicago. Away from all this, away from Jerry Thomas, maybe she could fo r g e t . . . .

COTTON GROWN IN TRY-OUT IN WESTERN PART OF JAPAN AND TEST WILL BE WIDENEDN IIG A TA FARMERS RAISE A SUFFICIENT CROP TO MEET OWN NEEDS AND W IL L SEEK ENOUGH TO M ARKET SURPLUS A T TH EIR N E X T HARVEST

TOKYO, Mar. 12 Directors of the Nakakubiki CountyAgricultural Association of Niigata prefecture are jubilant, for they have accomplished a task which has never beendreamed of before in the district the cultivation of cottonplants, the Asahi reports. No farmer in Niigata and Toyama prefectures, noted for heavy snowfalls and dampness, hitherto had believed that the growing o f cotton plants was possible, until recently, when they were able to feast their eyeson the blooming flowers o f cotton plants in that territory.

* * # *

PROMPTED BY CRICKETSWeary of wearing “ sufu” work clothes and tabi which

crickets and grass-hoppers have found to be a very agreeable food, and which do not last very long anyway, the farmers o f the country began to give the matter of obtaining a self supply o f cotton goods more serious thought.

Subsequent^, they approached the officials of the local agricultural association for help. Unable to resist the urgent plea of the farmers, the skeptical decided to give the plan a try-out.I , : * $ $ $

; ' > ' RESULTS SURPRISINGThe results were surprisingly good, much to the delight

o f the farmers as well as officials, who once believed that nothing short of a miracle could make such a plan possible.

Greatly encouraged by this experiment, the offiicals now are urging the farmers to grow more cotton plants next year, not only to make their work clothes, but also to sell surplus quantities to other prefectrues, where the farmers are suffering from an acute shortage of cotton goods.

CHICAGO, Mar. 12— Warfare from the skies was foreseen centuries ago in China, according to a book written by the late Dr. Berthold Laufer, formerly of the Field Museum of Chicago, and published by the Museum Press in 1928.

The book, “ The Prehistory of Aviation,” describes a “ flying chariot,” designed by a Chinese mechanic, Ki-kung. The Chinese emperor at that time, however, “ caused the airship to be destroyed, as he did not wish his own people to see it.”

Centuries later in 1670 the Jesuit, Francesco Lana, after planning a similar flying machine, published the best reason why the early Chinese machine was destroyed.

“ I do not see any other difficulty that could prevail against this invention,” Lana wrote, “ save. . . . that God will never permit such a machine to be constructed, in order to preclude the numerous consequences which might disturb the civil and political government among men. For who sees not that no city would be secure from surprise attacks, as the airship might appear at any hour directly over its market- square and would land there its crew?

“ The same would happen to private houses and to ships crossing the sea. . . . Even without descending, it could hurl iron pieces which would capsize the vessel and kill men, and the ships might be burnt with artificial fire, balls and bombs.”

Maui Cops Third Successive 4-IAAF Boxing TourneyM am ich i S portoria l

Coming home on the good ship Hualalai this morn-• ing was the sad Hawaii i Boxing team led by Manager ) John H. Beukema and Kazumi Taosaka, trainer. The pre

tourney favorites lost out to the strong Maui Boxing team 17-10 in the 4-IAAF Boxing championship tourney at Lanai Cit$\

Fred Silvano and Joseph Gumpher did not fail the local fans as the pair copped their respective title impressively. But Tommy Morita was the big disappointment as he lost put in the semi-finals to Tetsuo Tanaka of Lanai. This department thought that i f Hawaii had one fighter who had a chance to cop the title, he would be Morita.

Maybe Morita was o ff form, maybe he waited too long—his bad habit and started out too late, or maybe Morita wasjust o ff night, anyway the fact remains that he lost his fight. Now it would take a good fighter, yes a darn good fighter, to beat the Tommy Morita we know. Tanaka after de- cisioning Morita, it was reported, got a boxing lesson from Maui’s Takeshi Murayama.

Another fighter who failed to come through was John Torres. He was eliminated in the semi-finals by Tommy Ha- segawa of Maui, who went on to win the title. Hasegawa, a former Wainaku boy, fought here last year as a featherweight.

Although losing it was reported that Esteban Bibilone and Joe Park gave their opponents a whale of a battle. Bibilone lost to Murayama who later copped the flyweight title, while Park lost out to Shigeo Wasano o f Maui.

Perhaps the most impressive Hawaii boxer was Jo- ' seph Gumpher. Gumpher after losing a decision to

Philip Lizares in a recent dual meet came right back to knockout the later in the titular bout. In the semi-finals

he kayoed A. Pelago of Maui. Because of his fine showing in the 4-IAAF, Joe Gumpher is looked upon to go far in the coming territorials.

Fred Silvano, classy featherweight king, proved himself too good a boxer for the Maui lads as he won all his bouts by a wide margin. Whether he can cleverly outbox much more experienced fighters of Honolulu will be known in the territorial championships. I f he can, he’ll cop the title, i f not— well we’ll just wait and see.

The Big Island missed out in the bantamweight and welterweight divisions. I f Joe Ayala and Freddie Ledesma had gone to the tourney and copped their respective titles, the outcome of the meet would have been a different story. In the fights here both amateurs won over the Maui champions. Ayala was detained because of work, while Ledesma, now in Honolulu, was supposed to join the team in Lanai, but for some unknown reason he did not make a showing.

Every fighter on the Maui squad deserves a good tap on the back for their fine showing in the 4-IAAF tourney. A fter dropping the dual smoker to Hawaii on February 22, the Valley Islanders came right back to atone their previous defeat.Guess it’s just MAUI NO KA 01.

qther countries, Greece and China, in the second place. The Balkan situation, although merely smoldering for the present, due to Adolph Hitler’s apparent desire to acquire what he covets through diplomatic pressure rather than open warfare, appears to be putting o ff the ultimate day when Bulgaria will become the battleground of Italo-German forces on one side, with the British-Turk combine on the other.

From the East comes word that Foreign Minister Yosuke Matsuoka, iron man of Japan at present ,is leaving Tokyo en- route to Berlin and Rome to confer with Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini, with a possible stopover also in Moscow to chat with Joseph Stalin, head of the USSR. The coming conference o f Axis leaders in Europe may be taken as a meeting

- o f the totalitarian powers to decide the future course of the Axis nations in view of the certainty o f increased U. S. assistance to England and other powers aligned on the side of the democracies. Word has already been given to the world that President Franklin Roosevelt may visit England, where he is expected to hold conferences with both Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England, and the English crown heads.

Two memorable events have become history, namely, the passage of the U. S. Lend-Lease Bill and the Franco-Thailand peace in the Far East. The American people, through their representatives in Congress, have bestowed upon their president emergency powers which make the U. S. president the equal o f any of the Axis leaders, be he the Japanese foreign minister, Adolph Hitler, Mussolini or Stalin. Actually, despite all the limitations put on the Lend-Lease mea'sure, but with the entire resources of the wealthiest nation at his command to a large degree, President Roosevelt will be able to wield a much greater influence than the leaders o f the Axis powers.

Everything points to the fact that the world situation, divided between the Axis powers on one side and the democracies on the other, has come to a definite focus. Out of the prospective visits of Yosuke Matsuoka, Japan’s aggressive minister, to the European Axis capitals, and President franklin Roosevelt’s planned visit in the immediate future to the English capital, should come further crystalization of the entire world situation, thus bringing the day closer when powers on both sides will be obliged to work for a negotiated peace or ciecide the issues at stake in a warfare never known before in the history of mankind.

Momentous events are in store for the entire world during the next six months. The giants ,of the universe have given notice that they will start upon their journeys and when they return, the world will hear from them in no uncertain terms.
