A day in the life of a K-12 teacher and his class

In Mr. Patel’s 7th grade science class, online and blended learning takes place throughout the year. At the beginning of each unit, he

prepares by building a Brightspace Capture event to guide students through an onsite scavenger hunt about the upcoming unit topics.

During class, students are assigned to watch the Capture event on their mobile device. As they move around

the school grounds, the internet coverage is poor – but that’s no

problem. The event adapts from HD to SD, so they can keep

watching without interruption.

Throughout the scavenger hunt, Mr. Patel runs a live poll to keep his students

engaged and on-track. He then shares the results of the poll which helps the students

find the next location.

For homework, the students go to their Brightspace Pulse mobile app and participate in a discussion on the findings from their explorations during the Capture event. For their next class, Mr. Patel assesses the discussion posts and automatically pulls results, so that the class can

go over the findings as a group.

Judging from the results of the polls and discussions, Mr. Patel can tell this unit is going to be a challenge. To help increase engagement, he

decides to create a new course module of this unit using the tools in the Course Adventure Pack.

With large class sizes, and students learning at different levels, developing differentiated learning paths can be time consuming. But

thanks to the Course Adventure Pack, Mr. Patel now has time to look at the Class Engagement Dashboard to see which students are at-

risk, struggling, or unengaged in the material. He can then reach out to those who need extra guidance to get back on track.

Throughout the remainder of the unit, Mr. Patel continues to track class engagement with the Class Engagement Dashboard. He notices most students are engaged in the material, but uses the User Progress Tool

to dig deeper to view the engagement of each student. This data reveals that many of his students are using the content as directed,

but some are not.

The success of each student is a top priority for Mr. Patel, and he knows encouragement through awards and badges is something that

really motivates his students. Using release conditions within Brightspace, he is able to set up Automatic Badging and Awards with

ease – saving him time as he keeps his students engaged.

With the unit completed, Mr. Patel is pleased with the class progress as it was a great success, and the students are happy to have been

rewarded for their efforts.
