Student Journey Process
Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment
BGT recognises the importance of basic skills in English language, literacy and numeracy (LLN). Improving
basic skills will assist in breaking down barriers presently facing participants. Identification of training needs
will be based on the English language, literacy and numeracy competencies, which are needed to participate
effectively in vocational training. All students are required to complete an online LLN assessment which will
determine your literacy and numeracy levels and a learning plan can be developed for you.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of Prior Learning is the acknowledgment of the full range of the individual’s skills and
knowledge, irrespective of where or how the learning has taken place. Please note that sufficient evidence
must be provided to support current competency. To receive an RPL for any unit you must complete an RPL
process. Further information on this can be obtained from your Trainer.

Credit Transfer (CT)
Students that hold unit(s) of competency for the qualification that they are enrolling into are invited to apply
for Credit Transfer (CT). They will be required to provide a copy of the Statement of Attainment or transcript
to BGT before they commence their course.
BGT will verify the document with the issuing RTO. Where this is not possible, the Statement of Attainment
or transcript will need to be certified or the original sighted by a BGT representative.
The student will complete a CT Application Form which will be reviewed by BGT to determine the match and
equivalency of competencies held. If the match is identical, CT is granted.
Victorian Student Number (VSN)
Since 2009 the Victorian Student Number (VSN) is an identifier given to all Victorian students in school or
vocational training from Preparatory school to the age of 24. It is nine digits long, randomly assigned, and
tied to stable information about the student ie name, date of birth, gender.
It provides capability to accurately detect patterns of student movement through, and departure from, the
Victorian educational and training system.
For more information about the VSN please visit www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/pages/schooladmin/vsn/index.aspx
Unique Student Identifier (USI)
Students undertaking nationally recognised training delivered by a registered training organisation will need
to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI). A USI is a combination of 10 letters and numbers, and will
enable students to access an online account where they can print a transcript of all their training records
from 2015 onwards.
It is a government requirement that all students have a USI number to undertake nationally recognised
training in Australia. Under legislation BGT cannot print certificates without a valid USI number. A USI can be
obtained through applying directly at the USI website (www.usi.gov.au) or created by BGT upon enrolment
into a course.
For further information about the USI please visit www.usi.gov.au
Fees and Charges
All students are invoiced for tuition and resource fees at the time of enrolment. The fees charged will vary
depending on the qualification/units of competencies chosen, eligibility for funding and concession
entitlements at the time of enrolment.
BGT publish a statement of our fees on our website. A copy of our statement of fees is also provided to
students at enrolment.
It is important that you understand that accessing an available government funding entitlement may reduce
your ability to access such funding in the future.
Concession is available for eligible concession card holders should they be eligible for the Victorian
Government Funding (Skills First). Students must hold a concession card and provide evidence of entitlement
of concession on enrolment prior to the course commencing to be charged concession fees.

Students who enter into a fee payment plan are required to pay a $50 non-refundable resource deposit at
enrolment and complete an authorisation to direct debit form to have the remaining balance deducted over
a 12 week period until all fees are paid. Please note: a late fee may be incurred if students are unable to
make payment on the course fees within the allocated 12 week time frame or if direct debit payments are

post enrolment via email and phone. There will also be a session on introduction to computer skills and

Training and Assessment
Assessment
Throughout your course, you will be assessed regularly in each unit of competency that you are undertaking.
This is a necessary part of your course and is your opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge you
have acquired during your training.
What is an assessment?
An assessment is a task or group of tasks that shows your assessor that you have the skills and knowledge as
specified in a training package for that unit of competency. Evidence of your skills and knowledge will be
gathered by using a variety of methods, some of which include:
• Written responses
• Projects
• Observation in the workplace
• Demonstration
• Portfolio
• Case studies
After each assessment, you will be deemed:
• Competent (Satisfactory) – which means your assessment was of an acceptable standard
• Not yet competent (Not satisfactory) – which means that you are missing information or have
provided incorrect information.
Resubmission of assessments
You are entitled to three attempts for each assessment. If you submit an assessment that is deemed
unsatisfactory, you will be provided with an opportunity to make a second attempt in order to prove
competence. Your assessor will provide feedback to you, and provide you with a date by which you must
resubmit.
It is possible that you may not need to resubmit your whole assessment, and instead may need to complete
areas of your assessment that are missing, or is incorrect. Your assessor will provide you with specific
information regarding your resubmission, if the need arises.
If competency is not achieved after the second opportunity, at the trainer’s discretion the RTO Manager will
be informed. Students may be requested to attend an interview with the trainer and the RTO manager to
discuss their progression through the course, and a completion plan may be put in place.
A final opportunity will be granted to attempt the assessment. If at this stage competency is not achieved
the student will be required to re-enroll into the unit to complete the course and an associated fee ($125.00)
will be charged. Waiver of this fee is only at the discretion of the RTO Manager. Qualifications will not be
awarded until the course has been completed in line with Training Package requirements.

How to submit Assessments.
Students are responsible for submitting assessments on time by the nominated due date. Assessment due
dates are listed within the student’s unit assessment booklet. It is not BGT’s responsibility to chase you to
submit your assessment and we will take no responsibility for withdrawing you from the unit of competency
due to failure to submit your assessment by the deadlines.
BGT currently requires students to submit their work electronically to their trainer unless otherwise notified,
if this creates difficulty or hardship for you please contact your trainer immediately to discuss options.
BGT are required to retain a copy of all student work for up to 3 years for auditing purposes. All work
submitted in hardcopy is scanned and retained digitally. Students may request a copy of their completed
work once it has been processed; on course completion; or for transfers or RPL purposes. Requests are be
made in writing to your trainer or to admin@bgt.org.au and a response will be received within 7 days.
Assessments extensions
All assessments will have a due date noted in the assessment set by the trainer. Please ensure you are aware
of the due date for all assessments. If you are unable to meet an assessment deadline, the onus in on the
student to request an extension from your trainer prior to the due date in writing (via email). Stating:
1. The reason the for extension, 2. The requested time of the extension.
Students may only be granted 2 extensions per unit of up to two weeks for documented medical or personal
reasons. Additional time will be at the discretion of the RTO manager. Extensions may also be granted on
request from employers (in the case of trainees) and initiated by trainers in discussion with the RTO
Manager in extenuating circumstances where the extension is in the interest of assisting the student to
complete the course.
If an extension is granted, you will be notified of the revised due date for submission of your assessment by
your trainer in writing via email.
Late assessments will be marked only if a request for extension has been received by the trainer. If an
assessment is not received by the nominated due date and no request to extend is received the result
recorded will be not yet competent (NYC). It is not our responsibility to chase you to submit your
assessments and we take no responsibility for deeming you not yet competent (NYC) or withdrawing you
from the unit due to failure to submit you assessment by the deadlines. Should this occur the student may
need to re-enrol in the unit to complete at their own cost. If no contact is received regarding the unit
completion within the specified time frames withdrawal proceedings may be instigated. If you are having
issues with completing your work it is important that you speak to your trainer ASAP and prior to the due
date to avoid a negative result recorded. BGT staff are here to assist you through your studies.
Course Progression
For classroom students, it is an expectation that students complete learning and assessment tasks in line
with assessment due dates and course schedule provided at course commencement to ensure completion
by the course end date. Students will have a period of three months from the date of commencement to
complete their units. For workplace-based students it is an expectation that students complete assessments
by the nominated due date and recommend students complete 1 unit per month at a minimum to ensure all
training and assessment is completed by the course end date (and DELTA agreement for trainees). Courses
must be completed within the class year, students who do not comply with final submission dates and
complete the qualification within their enrolment year will be withdrawn from the course, and issued a
statement of attainment for units completed.

Cheating and Plagiarism
Cheating is the actual or attempted practice of seeking to obtain an unfair advantage in an examination,
assessment or in other written or practical work required to be submitted or completed by a student for
assessment.
Plagiarism means to take and use another person’s ideas or work and pass these off as one’s own, by failing
to give appropriate acknowledgement. This includes cases whereby another student may have completed all
or part of the assessment on behalf of another student.
Plagiarism and cheating are serious offences and will be treated accordingly.
If a trainer suspects that a student has cheated and/or plagiarised, the trainer must report directly to the
RTO Manager and inform them of the suspected allegations. A meeting will then be held between the RTO
Manager, assessor and student concerned to consult and work through the issues/allegations.
If, after viewing evidence, the suspected allegations are found to be correct, the RTO Training Manager (after
seeking further advice, if deemed necessary) may dismiss the student from the course. No attainment results
will be registered for the student due to either cheating or plagiarism. The Student will be duly notified within
5 working days of the decision to disqualify them from obtaining attainment results, and will not have any
monies for the course refunded.
At the RTO Managers discretion, a student may be provided an opportunity to make a second attempt,
which may include alternative equivalent assessment in order to prove competence. The student will be
notified of this arrangement in writing via email.
Students are reminded at this time of the declaration signed on course enrolment acknowledging that all
submitted work is original; none of the assessment work will be completed by another person or copied
directly or indirectly without referencing or correct citation and if found in breach of this policy, disciplinary
action may be taken against you.
You may appeal in accordance with our Complaints and Appeals Policy and Procedure available on our
website if you feel you been wrongly accused of misconduct.
Practical Placement
Practical placement provides students with the opportunity to apply the theory they have learnt from their
studies within a practical workplace experience. It is requirement that all students enrolled in courses that

include practical placement as part of their qualification, must provide BGT with a valid police check, and if
applicable a current working with children’s check, prior to commencing any placement. BGT will retain
copies of relevant checks within the students file.
Where placement is required for a course students are required to organise their own relevant
placement. Prior to commencement, a workplace agreement is to be completed and signed by the host
placement organisation, the student and the trainer with approval by the BGT Training manager. A record of
this agreement is to be kept at BGT and is vital to ensure that all relevant WHS policies are being adhered
to.
Should you require assistance with placement or a workplace agreement form to discuss with a prospective
Host please see your trainer. Students are not to commence placement with any organisation under the BGT
Banner without this document being completed and approved by the RTO Training Manager.
Certificates and Statement of Attainments

the relevant training package. A certificate will be issued to you within 10 working days of you being
assessed as meeting all of the requirements of the course and paying all agreed course fees.
