mC1'rcnerr AcccU'rt{ Overcrcwrt?$ YourAs a woman, do you ever feelpressure to be a Betty Crockermom, a Victoria Secret wife, and a Martha Stewart housekeeper ...all while working tohelp provide some familyincome?

We tell ourselves that we oughtto homeschool our kids, andthen we feel selfish if we don'tor can't. In addition, we want topray and study our Bible, takecare of our aging parents, volunteer at church, beinvolved in a small group, workout at the gym, and the listgoes on and on.

When you can't keep up withthese expectations, (and youcan't) do you feel guilty? Is itdifficult to say "no" and setlimits, because you're afraidsomeone might get mad or feeldisappointed about you?

Fortunately, God never asks usto do it all. Rather, He tells usto be a good steward of ourresources.

In reality, you and I only havefour resources at our disposal:our time, our talents, ourenergy, and our money. And,the way we allocate theseresources not only impacts us,but also those we love. Therefore, it is essential thatwe give some thought to ourdeepest values and priorities.

Feeling stressed out usuallymeans that we havemisspent our resources. Forexample, many people feeloverwhelmed these daysbecause of high credit carddebt and financial difficulties.Their monetary resourceswere overspent, and theconsequences are drainingthem emotionally andfinancially.

Women can do the samething with their otherresources. For instance, youcan go into debt with yourenergy resources byextending yourself beyondyour limits. If you do this toolong, you'll windup physicallydrained and emotionallyexhausted. Always hurryingis a refusal to accept thereality of time. We weren'tmade to live without marginsand try to squeeze everymoment out of your day. It'snot surprising that we feelsometimes like a taut rubberband that's ready to snap.

Sometimes life becomes toohard because we have notbeen good stewards of ourresources, includingourselves! We collapseunder the stress of trying todo more than we have theresources to handle.

How can you regain controlover the strain? Take sometime to evaluate how youallocate your resources oftime, energy, money, andtalents. Ask yourself thesetwo questions:

1. Are you living within yourlimits, or are you usuallyoverdrawn?

2. Do you budget yourresources according to yourpriorities and your family'sneeds? Or, do you use upyour resources in order tomeet other's expectationsor gain their approval?

Living beyond your limitswill ultimately catch up withyou. It's like giving someoneelse unlimited access toyour bank account. Don't letpeople write emotionalchecks that your body andmind can't cash.

Say "no" when necessary, and don't feel guilty orfearful for doing so. Avoidpaying the price for beingtoo nice. Maximize yourpersonal resources by livingwithin limits that give youroom to breath.

leslie Answers Your Questions

Q: I'm dating someone, but I feel some concerns. What is the bestway to know if my relationship is healthy? (Pamela in OH)

A: Great question. To determine when a relationship is healthy, makesure that these three ingredients are in place. First, there must bemutual caring. The needs, feelings, thoughts, and interests of oneanother should be important to both of you. Second, mutual honestybuilds a foundation of trust, which is essential to all healthyrelationships. Pretending, avoiding, and misleading are forms of deceitthat will fracture relational trust. Lastly, all healthy relationships requiremutual respect. Demeaning or abusive behavior breaks down aperson's spirit, which prevents lasting intimacy from forming.

Keep in mind, you can minister to someone apart from these coreingredients, but you cannot have a healthy relationship.
