ART THERAPY
• Art therapy has been used with children because it is a natural language for most children and can be a valuable modality for expression of trauma, distress or loss.
• Children do not have the verbal capacity to articulate crisis and for those who have been violated or abused it is a way to communicate feelings and experiences without words.
ART THERAPY
• It reduces anxiety and helps children feel more comfortable with therapist.
• It may increase memory retrieval.• It may help children organize their narratives• It may prompt children to tell more than they would
during a solely verbal interview.
REASONS FOR INTRODUCING ART EXPRESSION IN THERAPY WITH CHILDREN
• Avoid imposing adult standards on children’s creative work
• Avoid making assumptions about content and meaning • It is important to understand the child’s history and the
context in which the picture was drawn to really understand the meaning of the drawing.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS IN ART THERAPY
• It helps the child to externalize thoughts, feelings, and experience through both art expression and story telling
• It helps the therapist to better understand the child and provide the best possible intervention on behalf of the child.
TALKING ABOUT THE ART DURING OR AT THE END OF THE SESSION IS IMPORTANT
• Have the child identify four colors and their related feelings.
• Draw a large ginger bread shaped person.• Identify a person in which you will like the
child to explore their feelings.• Have the child color in the person with the
different feeling identified colors based on their feelings for that person.
• Pay attention not only to the color but the placement of the color
COLOR CODED FEELINGS
• Draw and oval shape on a piece of paper• Ask the client what does it look like? If he
child does not guess and egg then the therapist should suggest that it is an egg.
• Explain that something is about to be born and asks the child to draw cracks on the egg.
• When the child draws the cracks, you ask the child what is to be born. If the child responds a chick the therapist should say this is a magic egg and anything you can think of can come out of it
EGG DRAWING
• You provide a new piece of paper and direct the child to draw his or her fantasy creation along with the pieces of broken eggshells.
• Finally you ask the child to color in their creation

• What is it that you drew?• Does he or she seem to be near or far from
you.? Why do you feel that way?• Suppose that it is trying to go some where,
where do you think he or she is going?• If it were to meet something or someone on the
way, who would it encounter?• If it grew up how do you think it would change?• Does this remind you of anything?• What is it that it, he or she is desiring and what
gives you that idea?
POST DRAWING INTERVIEW (PDI)
• Draw a large oval on the paper• You need to explain that this is the
entrance to a cave.• Suppose you live here, what would you
see outside?• Confirm understanding of the directive,
then you should encourage them to proceed with drawing.
• If the child desires, the therapist should encourage the internal wall of the cave to be colored as well.

• Please tell me about your cave drawing?• What type of place is this and what did you
imagine it to be like?• Does the cave seem near or far from where
you are?• Does the cave seem warm or cool inside? Whys
does it make you feel that way• Would you like to life in this care? Please tell me
why?• What do you most like about this drawing? Why?• What do you least like about this drawing and
Why?

• What sort of weather goes best with this cave (sunny or cloudy day etc..)
• If there is a wind blowing outside and in what direction left right top or bottom?
• Is someone coming into the cave who what might that be?• If the person who lives in the cave is going out where would
that person go to?• If you think this cave lacks or needs something what might it
be?• Does this drawing remind you of anything?• Was there anything difficult to draw here?

• Scribble chaser• Draw the feelings in your head?• Draw yourself• Draw your family doing something
together?• Draw what your anger, depression or
fear look like?• Draw a person picking an apple from

effects on the body (group activity).

• Draw the unmanageability of your addiction.
• Draw the effects of unmanageability and powerlessness on your family.
• Draw a family portrait• Draw the outline of a house. Outside
the house, draw the image that the family portrayed to others. Inside the house, draw the way the family really functioned.
• Draw a picture of what you never got as a child and still long for today
