What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of visual art making

as a way of expressing and working through emotional conflicts and of fostering self-awareness and personal growth. Art therapists work with individuals of all ages and abilities in clinical, educational, rehabilitative and studio settings.

Art Therapy at Wayne StateTo practice art therapy requires a master’s degree. Wayne State University offers two graduate degree programs leading to professional preparation in art therapy. The M.Ed. in Art Education with Concentration in Art Therapy is a 48-credit program that prepares students for art therapy careers. The MA in Counseling with an Area of Interest in Art Therapy prepares art therapist/counselors who are eligible to earn both art therapy and counseling credentials following graduation. Both programs have been awarded “Approval” (accreditation) by the American Art Therapy Association.
