Overall goals   Improve the current state-of-the-art methodology for

satellite based oil spill detection   Demonstrate through deliveries to existing and new users

how these improvements can contribute to the development of a sustainable downstream service

Integrating new geo-information products e.g. from the Marine Core Service into innovative methods for oil spill detection

Demonstrate a next generation service compliant with existing and new users expectations

The project – key words   Multidisciplinary data and information Integration

(space born data, environmental data, and other land based data)

  Oil spill detection methodology improvement

  Source detection and identification improvement

User involvement   Operational concept and future missions

Build on the consortium experience on operational oil services such as the EMSA CSN service

SeaU Initial benchmark test   Objective:

Identify weaknesses in the service chains   Determine to what degree the service providers are

harmonized.   Check the service chains capability to:

Correctly identify confirmed oil slicks.   Correctly not report confirmed false alarm features

Assess the degree of harmonization with regards to:   Classification – Identify features as possible oil (including

correct classification in A and B)   Characterization – The parameters used to characterize a slick

Service chains:   CSN-2 service chains from KSAT, EDISOFT, e-GEOS and CLS

Users Involvement The users have been involved in satellite based integrated oil spill detection service provision and developments since the initial R&D phases during the 90-ties, providing the requirements related to relevant EC Directives and national/regional environmental legislation. The main users today include:

• national pollution control authorities in Europe, now being served via the EMSA CSN service

• offshore oil industry particularly in Northern Europe • few other/commercial service brokers
