Colorado’s Jobs on the Upswing
I just received Gary Horvath’s
monthly economy report; he is stats
Colorado’s job growth scenario will
most likely range with an increase of
68,000-74,000 in 2014. We will see
our employment growth driven by
the construction and tourism sectors
at the top of the list adding 10,700
and 10,100 jobs respectively.
In addition the Professional, Scientific
and Technical Services Sector (PST)
posted a gain of 8,900 workers.
A segment of the PST sector includes
companies in Colorado's high tech
industry.
On a positive note, there were no
sectors that lost jobs in 2013.
Additional details can be found in the
report, CBER Review of the Colo-
rado Economy - Analysis of Colorado
Employment Data 2013 http://www.cber.co/CBEReconomy.html

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH
Bruce Hier and Robbie Person proudly accept the Business of the Month award as Chamber President,
Pam Ridler, Chamber Chairman, Michael Likens and Chamber Ambassadors show their support.
The Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce honors Hier Drill-ing Company as our March Business of the Month recipient. Hier Drilling has been a mem-ber of the Castle Rock Cham-ber for more than 40 years, making them our longest stand-
ing members! Hier Drilling Co has been in business since October 1973, continuing the tradition of Hier & Price Drilling, started in 1944 by Archie Hier and Art Price. The company split in 1972-1973, when the pump service was sold to Ralph Norden, JA Price took on the deep indus-trial type work, and Hier Drill-ing has been doing the domestic work here in Douglas County ever since. In 1973, George Hier moved from the field into the office. subsequently, Bruce & Robbie Hier Person worked for the company starting in the 1980's, and upon George's re-tirement, took ownership of the company, beginning the 3rd generation of family ownership. In 2008, Hier Drilling purchased Norden Pump Service, bringing that part of the water well in-dustry back into the company structure. So now they are a full service drilling, installation and service company serving Doug-
las, Elbert, Arapahoe, and por-tions of El Paso, Jefferson, Ad-ams, Park, Weld, and Denver counties. They pride them-selves in being able to help peo-ple in the drilling process, from permitting through the comple-tion of the well/pump system, and have multiple service crews to try to get you back in water as soon as possible. They are licensed and bonded through the Colorado Division of Water Resources. (Holding the 2nd oldest active license in the State). They are members of the Colorado Water Well Con-tractors Association, and the National Ground Water Asso-ciation. In 1959, Hier & Price attended the first ever Douglas County Junior Livestock sale, and that is a tradition at Hier Drilling Co and they are very proud to have been able to par-ticipate in for the past 40 years. They also are supporters of the CALF project at the Lowell Ranch. Please visit their website at www.hierdrillingco.com or call 303-688-3012 for informa-
tion.

Congratulations to our Ambassador of the month, Lynette McNairy, H&M Transmission and Automotive, LLC and H&M Collision and Auto
Body, LLC.
Born in St Paul Minnesota, Lynette moved here with her family to Colo-rado at a young age and grew up in the Denver Metro area. She attended
Barnes Business College in Lakewood and joined the Val-Pak organization as their office manager. After 15 years, Lynette moved on to Colorado Mountain Development overseeing their accounts payable division in two states. That’s where she met her husband Mike who was in the process of starting up H&M Transmission and Automotive in Castle Rock. Cur-rently, she plays a key role as book keeper for H&M ensuring
account accuracy, payables, receivables, taxes and payroll.
“I am so glad to be a part of the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce, what a great group to be involved with. As an ambassador and currently the secretary on the executive team, I am enjoying the opportunity to support both small and large businesses in town. Castle Rock is home to a thriving business community and I take pride in being a part of a small business and sup-
porting our community.”
Thank you Lynette for all you do for the

10 Best States for
Starting a Business
Catherine Clifford, Entrepreneur Magazine
To encourage residents to start their own businesses, states are investing in entrepreneur mentorship pro-grams and pumping up their high-tech workforce. Maryland, Colorado and Virginia are the three states most supportive of innovation, according to the fourth annual Enterprising States report out this week from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a Washington, D.C.-based business
advocacy organization. 5 Key Measures:The study measured five aspects of policy, including ex-ports and international trade, entre-preneurship and innovation, business climate, talent pipeline, and infra-structure. States were ranked for their performance in each category. Also, the study measured and ranked overall economic climate and growth in each state. Utah earned the title as
the top performing state overall for fostering business growth and creat-ing jobs. It ranked in the top 10 of every policy ranking and came in third overall in economic perform-
ance.
#2. Colorado: In addition to attracting hikers and bikers, the Rocky Mountain state is a hotbed for high-tech businesses and ranks fourth in the country for the number of new
businesses born. It has a relatively high concentration of STEM jobs and in the past two
years has bolstered its high-tech work-force with an additional 1,100 software
programmers, 840 engineers and 675 science
research jobs. Read entire article at: http://

STUDENTS PITCH TO LOCAL
INVESTORS
- Young Entrepreneurs from Doug-
las County Seek Funding to Launch
Enterprises –
On Tuesday, April 1, 2014, young
entrepreneurs will present their
business plans before a panel of lo-
cal business leaders and a public
audience. Students from the Castle
Rock Young Entrepreneurs Acad-
emy who have completed the mile-
stones necessary to allow them to
progress to the Investor Panel, will
be competing for funding from local
investors, who may choose to fund
one, some or all of the student en-
terprises. Based on the appeal and
merit of the students’ plans and
presentations, local companies like
mywedding.com, Castle Rock Ad-
ventist Health Campus and other
members of the Castle Rock
Chamber wi ll determine the
amount of funds to allocate to each
business or social movement.
Mike Boyle, of The Mike Boyle Res-
taurant Shows, will be master of
ceremonies for the event. The In-
vestor Panel will also choose the
overall winner, who will move on
to the Semi-Final Competition in
Frisco, Texas, at the end of April,
where he/she will again compete
for funding and potential scholar-
ships. These students present their
business ventures and social move-
ments to the public for the first
time and compete for funding that
will enable them to get their ideas
off the ground and running. These
s tudents have completed all
requirements to be selected to pre-
sent to the Investor Panel:
Nic Brownrigg is a sophomore at
Castle View High School. He has a
heart for service and is starting a
non-profit social enterprise.
Ariana Castro is a sophomore at
Castle View High School. She has
taken her passion for fashion and
turned it into a retail business.
Marissa Gould is a freshman at
Castle View High School. With
YEA!, she has finally gotten the op-
portunity to turn her product idea
into a reality.
Paul McNamara is a freshman at
Highlands Ranch High School. His
interest in filmmaking and digital
technology has turned a hobby into
a business enterprise.
The event is free and the commu-
nity is invited to come and observe
the Investor Panel pitch competi-
tion, which will be held in the thea-
tre at Castle View High School,
5254 N. Meadows Drive, Castle
Rock, CO 80109. A Reception will
be held at 6 p.m., and Presentations

The Leadership Douglas County class learned that
“first in line, first in right” is the basis of Colorado’s
priority system under water law, as explained by Dr.
John Hendricks of the Centennial Water District. The
class discovered in depth, what is happening in Douglas
County in the areas of water, energy and conservation.
With so much happening in the areas of water and the
recent addition of the Rueter-Hess Reservoir to the
county’s infrastructure, the day was filled with a num-
ber of experts in their respective fields discussing cur-
rent trends and long-term plans for some of the
county’s most complex issues.
The class also heard from Josh Liss, Manager of Public
Affairs, IREA, Chris McGowne of Colorado Gas & Oil
and Tom Henley of Xcel. Mr. Veda Ball of TeamWise
led a workshop on conflict management during the
leadership skills segment, where participants practiced
listening, removing emotion from the situation and,
increasing their ability to utilize more options during
difficult conversations.
Water 101 session focused on water demand and
management, but also about the need for good com-
munications with the public. Tours of the North Wa-
ter Treatment Plant and Rueter-Hess Reservoir com-
pleted the day.
Leadership Douglas County helps emerging and recognized leaders expand their skills, enhance their knowledge of local and state issues, and increase their effectiveness, while leveraging their individual passion
to have a positive impact on their community.
