EPA Training and Internship Program for Addressing Border Air Quality Problems

Objectives
• Develop an internship program for undergraduate and graduate students
• Recruit and train future air quality professionals for the border region
• Provide financial support to the student participants– Undergraduate student: $3,000
– Graduate students: $4,000
– 1 graduate course in related field for graduate students
– 1 credit hour of tuition for a training course (CE 4171) at UTEP
( 1 credit-hour lab course in air quality at the beginning of the summer)
• Offer internships (summer or regular semester) at participating agencies in the fields of– Research in air quality engineering– Community air pollution health epidemiology– Environmental justice– Air quality improvements
The Internship Program
• Certificate Program– 1-credit lab course in air quality
– 8-week full-time summer internship or 16 weeks half-time interns with approved agencies
– 1 graduate course in related filed for graduate students
– Make a presentation
– Attend quarterly JAC meetings (Joint Advisory Committee for Improving Air Quality in El Paso, Cd. Juarez, and Sunland Park, a binational organization under the La Paz agreement)
– A few hours of volunteer service, arranged by the Center for Civic Engagement

• Outcomes– 50 interns in 5 years
– 50 interns from multiple disciplinary areas in engineering, science, health science, education, business and liberal arts
– 1 credit hour of tuition for a training course at UTEP
( 1 credit-hour lab course in air quality at the beginning of the summer)
– Transition of students from K-12 curriculum to UTEP undergraduates – Transition of undergraduates to graduate air quality engineers/scientists
