“I think mentors are important
and I don’t think anybody makes
it in the world without some form
of mentorship. Nobody makes it
alone. Nobody has made it alone.
And we are all mentors to people
even when we don’t know it.”
-Oprah Winfrey
What is mentoring?Mentoring is a personal enhancement strategy through which one person facilitates the development of another by sharing known resources, values, skills, perspectives, attitudes, and proficiencies. Commitment to mentoringParticipants in the program are expected to attend all formal program meetings (4) in addition to allowing time for surveys, socials, and other informal events. Meeting dates and times between mentoring pairs are determined individually at the beginning of the mentoring relationship. Mentors and mentees should expect to allow two to five hours per month for mentoring program events and regular interaction in the relationship. Mentee benefits• Insight into pros and cons of various career options• Increased self-awareness and self- discipline
• An expanded personal network• Support in your new or current role• A sounding board for testing ideas and plans• Positive, constructive feedback on professional and personal development areas
Mentor benefits• Renewed enthusiasm for role as expert• Increased awareness of personal biases, assumptions, and areas of improvement• Enhanced coaching, communication, and leadership skills• Engaging in a positive meaningful volunteer opportunity• Motivate and support someone trying to get to the next level in his/her career• Introduction to new talent in the field
Mentee/mentor matching philosophyThe CSHRM Mentoring Program Committee attempts to find an appropriate “match” within the applicant pool and takes the following factors into consideration when pairing:• Areas of expertise/interest• Years of experience/level in career• Mentoring program goals• Geographic location and meeting availability • Compatibility
