“School’s Out for Summer” Alice Cooper’s song… I remember hearing it play on the school’s announcement system on the last day when the final dismissal bell would ring. Sometimes I would sing with it. Oh to see all the excitement that summer break brought to all the students…or so I thought in my earlier years in the school system.
For so many young people, summer break isn’t one of vacation destinations, slipping and sliding in your back yard, going to the pool, sitting on your porch and having a lemonade relaxing, going to a barbeque or picnic, enjoying time with family and friends. No unfortunately for many school age students summer is about wondering when and where your next meal is coming from, where you can stay and be safe from the elements as well as the neighborhood, where you would be sleeping that evening and so much more that we the fortunate can’t even fathom.
With retirement just a few short weeks away, I am reminded how blessed my life has been. Sure I have had a few stumbles along this path that I call Anna’s Life, but I always knew that I had a bed to sleep in, and that the only way I wouldn’t be eating a meal is out of choice…one that I made. If it was too hot outside, heck I could go inside in the air conditioning or take a jump in the pool and I really never had to worry about the safety of my neighborhood. I have been blessed to have good friends, a beautiful family, and to have Hope.
I “Hope” that I will never forget all the blessings that have been bestowed upon me.
I “Hope” that I can make even the smallest difference in the life of at least one young person by taking time to listen and really hear what they have to say…by giving time to pay it forward and put some hope in their life.
It would be wonderful if there was lots of money that I could give to solve some of their problems but to give of myself, my time, and my talents to bring a positive change in a life is what I think is what my retirement should be about.
My goal would be to do this in true fashion, for it is the spirit of love, giving, caring for others that all of you my friends have further instilled in me.
School may be out for summer but vacation and relaxing is definitely not on this member’s agenda. Now is my time to “Go Make a Difference”.

News & Notes
Any Interest in Cougars Baseball?
There is an interest sheet in the lobby for a visit to a COUGARS BASEBALL GAME! We’ve chosen two different nights in August that show promise to us, but would like to know which may draw more interest. The nights: 1) Saturday, August 13, is MINIONS NIGHT. At 4:45, the band, American English, will play their Beatles music out behind center field, the Jesse White Tumblers will perform, and fireworks after the game. 2) Saturday, August 27, is 80’s NIGHT. Before the game, the band, Hi Infidelity, will play their 80’s music, free cap giveaway, and, of course, fireworks after the game. Both games have “Run the Bases” after the game, too. Please indicate your interest and we’ll get tickets for the night that will bring the most HOPErs to the ballpark.
Thanks, Community Life Ministry
Free Friday Flick!
On Friday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m. at HOPE UCC we will be screening the 2014 movie PRIDE - PRIDE is inspired by an extraordinary true story. It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all. Enjoy popcorn and snacks, stay for a discussion afterwards!
