Biography

Annabel wrote the following biography in

preparation for a trip with Young at Heart

to Big Bend, Texas

83

I was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, in the same block as I have lived the past 51 years. I grew up

in rural Bartlesville and rural Dewey, graduating from Dewey High School in the early 30’s, the

depression days. Jobs were scarce. After being out of school for a year, I became bored and went

back to Dewey High as a post graduate to brush up on my typing and shorthand.

I took a job in a Bartlesville abstract office in the spring and moved to Bartlesville. Later I attended

Business School and then worked in a combined abstract, real estate and insurance office until I

married in October 1941 and became a soldier’s wife.

Bruce expected to be discharged December 7, 1941, when he would complete his year of required

service at Fort Sam Houston, so I remained in San Antonio. Our plans changed abruptly with the

bombing of Pearl Harbor, so I remained in San Antonio and he came nights and weekends when not

on Guard Duty or maneuvers. This continued until November 1942, when his division was

transferred to Wisconsin and I returned to Bartlesville with our three week old daughter.

While on maneuvers in Canada he got a severe ear infection which led to a radical mastoid

operation with a medical discharge in October 1943. We spent the rest of our lives in Bartlesville

until he died in December 1980.

We had three children--two daughters and one son. They all had their own homes by then. Our two

daughters each gave us a granddaughter and grandson. I now have a five year old great-

granddaughter.

I had three older sisters ranging 8 to 11 years my senior, also a younger brother. They are all now

deceased, including my parents.

I enjoy sightseeing trips with Young At Heart group and Singles III Sunday School group. I also

made several overseas trips, including Israel in 1973, the only trip I have wanted to repeat. I am

looking forward to this trip, which I expect to be my last overseas trip. My most enjoyable physical

and mental exercise is Square Dancing. I also enjoy Bridge and other table games.

Bartlesville has been my address my entire life except the year in San Antonio. My roots are deep

in the ―Heart of Bartlesville."
