Amanda Jean blogs at Crazy Mom QuiltsandCheryl at Dining Room Empire.“I love the frugal nature of quilting, of using itall,” says Amanda Jean. “It goes to the heart oftraditional quilting, women making somethingbeautiful and functional out of what they have.Being frugal is in my nature, and it’s also acreative challenge.”
Cheryl, who spent years in corporate andnonprofit positions working on climate changeissues, says her interest in sustainabilitydovetails with her love of using scraps.“I couldn’t throw little pieces away because I
couldn’t justify the waste,” she says. “AmandaJean inspired me to think about more ways touse them.”About six months after that first conversation, they started talking about working on a booktogether. The resulting volume, SundayMorning Quilts, features patterns for cozy, modern scrap quilts.
They offer multiple ideas for dealing with theinevitable snippets of fabric that result from quiltand sewing projects. Their organizationalsuggestions make it possible to actually usescraps, rather than being overwhelmed by ajumble of ragged strips.“There’s so much potential in scraps,” saysAmanda Jean. “We’re really passionate aboutgetting people excited about them, rather thandreading them. You buy fabric because youlove it, you pay $10 for a yard for it, and youshould use it all.”

CATHY O'BRIEN
Using traditional techniques such assewing, embroidery, knitting andpatchwork I create sculptural pieces from
fabric with a strong sense of narrative. Ijuxtapose the use of craft as a mediumwith the method of installation, favouringphotography and projection to createinteresting and dynamic spaces.
My most recent project investigates theMinotaur; the mythical monster thatsymbolises the bestial side of humannature, one governed by dark instinctover thought and reason.
It is through this project I havediscovered a passion for attempting todiscover the contemporary in themythological.
