VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT
All Saints vision and mission is to ensure the parish nurtures,
challenges, supports, and shares our baptismal mission to bring
about the kingdom of God. The life of our faith community, rooted
in Jesus Christ and celebration of the Eucharist, is exemplified in
the areas of gathering for prayer and worship of God; sharing the
good news of Jesus in word and deed; facilitating the life-long
faith formation of our brothers and sisters; building up our
communal life and collaborative ministry; endeavoring as good
stewards to cherish and share our gifts, talents and treasure; and
living the faith daily by reaching out in service and advocating
for those in need, within our parish faith community and
beyond.

REFLECTIONS
How difficult Jesus' teaching can be for our modern minds to grasp.
Imagine cutting off your hand or plucking out your eye to prevent
yourself from sinning. Yet, the more subtle point behind his words
is humility. It is easy for us to become complacent or to think of
ourselves as better than others. But Jesus taught that his
disciples are not to look down on others who may not seem as
"Christian" as they do, yet who still love God. We are not to
become so proud of our identity as Christians that we lose
vigilance against our fallen nature or the lies of the devil.
How do we maintain a disposition of humility? By continually asking
the Spirit to show us how deeply we need Jesus. We often try to
stop sinning by our own efforts rather than drawing close to Jesus,
the source of all power. At the root of all pride is a self
sufficiency that is foreign to the gospel. It is the very thing
that moved Adam and Eve to break God's command: They tried to
become like God, but without God.
Our redemption should astound us. How comforting to realize that it
is Jesus who saves us, not our attempts to stop sinning. The more
the Holy Spirit teaches us about the sin that is within us, the
more we will stand amazed at Jesus' love and mercy. Jesus is
looking for servants who recognized their sins and limitations, and
yet who love him so deeply that they don't ever want to offend him
or lead his people astray. He wants servants who turn from sin by
turning to Jesus in repentance and trust.
The closer we come to Jesus, the humbler we become. And, the
humbler we become, the more he can entrust us with his work. It is
really a privilege to serve such a wonderful God. Let's bind
ourselves closer to him and allow his love to keep us humble and
simple.
Peace, Father Bob Harris
MISSION APPEAL IN OUR PARISH
On the weekend of October 10th and 11th, Rev. Thomas Rayar who is
originally from India and serving in the Archdiocese of St. Paul
and Minneapolis will be here to make a mission appeal for his
native diocese, Sivagangai. The diocese of Sivagangai was
established in 1987. This is a relatively new mission diocese in
the State of Tamil Nadu, India consisting of Sivagangai and Ramnad
civil districts, which are the poorest districts in the State of
Tamil Nadu.
The diocese is in need of external help to run its mission
consisting of 190,000 Catholics in the population of more than 2.5
million in the area of 8,400 square kilometer. About 30% of our
diocesan Catholics belong to the low caste who are economically and
educationally poor who live on $2 per day. About 50% of the
population consists of small farmers and unskilled laborers who
heavily depend upon the erratic monsoon for their livelihood. The
rest of the population (20%) belongs to a fishermen community whose
livelihood has become more challenging after Tsunami in 2004.
When the diocese was established there were only 48 priests, many
of whom were aged. Today the diocese is proud of having 151
diocesan priests, 91 religious priests and 434 religious nuns
serving in its mission. During the last 28 years the diocese has
started many orphanages and high schools and higher secondary
schools, middle schools and primary schools (183 total). There were
only 39 parishes when the diocese was started. At present there are
79 parishes and 737 mission stations.
The fund collected through this mission appeal will be used to
support evangelization and educational ministries for the poor
children in the orphanages in the diocese of Sivagangai.

FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER: A LIVING ROSARY
Being married to a quieter guy, I got a pretty good kick out of a
meme I saw on Facebook a while back with the saying: "Introverts
UNITE! Separately... In your own homes..."
Often when I invite people to get more involved as volunteers, they
will tell me how busy they are and how they can't imagine adding
one more thing. I get it. I am there, too. For many of us, we are
discerning what we need to cut out, not what we need to add.
But this month-long event is different.
The tag-line for the Living Rosary could really be "Parishioners
UNITE in Prayer! Separately... In your own homes, or cars, or
wherever you want!"
The All Saints Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program is asking
for as many parishioners as possible to make a strong commitment to
pray ONE particular decade of the Rosary each day for October: "the
month of the Rosary."
We invite you to join together and pray for the parish intentions
of fostering vocations, physical and spiritual healing for
parishioners, and for the building of a Culture of Life in our
community.
There are already many parishioners who are already active in
Living Rosary groups, uniting their one decade with 19 others to
form a whole 20-decade rosary each day!
It is so easy to join in! There is a sign-up sheet in the gathering
space, on the parish Facebook page, on the All Saints Catechesis of
the Good Shepherd Facebook page and on the CGS page on our parish
website. As more and more people join in, we will continue adding
more decades and more rosaries!
This could be a great way to build the Rosary into your family
prayer routine (like every time you get in the car!) or you may add
one more decade to your daily prayers. Even if it is separately, in
our own homes and cars, This is a great way to unite together in
prayer as a parish to build a culture of prayer in our domestic
churches: our homes and families!
God's blessings on you and your families this week and
always,
Mandie DeVries Director of Religious Education

STEPHEN MINISTRY INTRODUCTION WORSHOP
Would you like to learn more about caring for people who are
hurting and reach out to others in a distinctively Christian way?
On Saturday, October 31st, Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 2926
Beaver Ave. in Des Moines will host a Stephen Ministry Introductory
Workshop from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The half-day workshop is designed
both to enhance participants’ care giving skills and to help
congregations explore ways to expand their caring ministry.
Registration begins at 8:00 am and refreshments will be
served.
One reason we’re so excited about helping other congregations learn
about Stephen Ministry is that it is making a significant
difference in the life of our own congregation. Since we began
Stephen Ministry in August of 2012, 15 Stephen Ministers have gone
through 50 hours of training in order to provide quality one-
to-one Christian care to hurting people. If you think you might be
interested in being a Stephen Minister, attending the workshop is a
great way to learn more. Members of your congregation are invited
to attend the workshop. The cost of the workshop is $15 per person
or $50 for a group of four or more from the same congregation. For
more information, or to register to attend the Stephen Ministry
Introductory Workshop at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des
Moines, please contact Stephen Ministries at (314) 428-2600. You
can also register online at www.stephenministry.org/workshop. It is
important to pre-register so that we will have plenty of materials
on the day of the workshop.
Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity for personal growth
and to learn more about Stephen Ministry.
