Getting Started
To be able to use Facebook you must sign up
Go to www.facebook.com
The page should look similar to this picture
Enter the required details and press sign up
Setting Up Step 1 allows you to find any
friends who already have a facebook account
Enter your email and all your contacts from that email address will be added as friends on facebook
Step 2 has a similar purpose It asks for your high school,
university/college and your employer to attempt to find more people you know to add as friends on facebook
Step 3 asks for a picture to serve as your profile picture so that people can see who you are when you interact with them on facebook
It gives you the option of uploading an existing picture or taking one if you have a webcam
Setting Up continued After completing the 3 steps
you will be taken to a page with a similar display to the top right image
Clicking on the edit profile button will take you to a screen similar to the bottom image
This allows you to navigate through the different menus in the side bar and fill out the information to add to your profile e.g. The basic information section allows you to share a bit about yourself
After filling out all of the information go to the privacy settings and change them to if you want
After that click the home button (as shown in the top left picture)
News Feed Once you have clicked the home button you will
be take to a page with this in the top left corner This is the home page (as the name implies) The home page will always display the ‘news
feed’ The news feed keeps you informed about what
your friends are doing When they post a status update it is displayed in
the news feed You have 2 options You can either display the ‘Top News’ or the
‘Most Recent’ The ‘Top News’ displays the status updates that
have the most comments and/or ‘Likes’ (will be explained in a later slide)
The ‘Most Recent’ displays the latest status updates and informs you every time a new status is posted by one of your friends
You are also able to post a status Your status can be about anything you want You are also given the option to upload photos,
videos or link websites These will all be displayed in your friends news
feed
Like and Comment Each time a status is posted or a
photo, video or link is uploaded and displayed in the news feed they have two buttons underneath them, ‘Like’ and ‘Comment’
As the name implies, the like button is used to let a person know you like the information they are sharing
The comment button allows you to post a response to the information, and will be displayed directly under the person’s status/information
Both’ likes’ and ‘comments’ will be seen by the person as well as anyone else who can see the information in their news feed (that includes the friends of the person who has posted the information)
Messages
Another part of the side bar is the messages bar
As you can see the messages has 3 parts – Messages, Updates and Sent as well as a new message button in the top right corner
The messages part allows you to view messages you have received (inbox)
The sent part allows you to view messages you have previously sent
The new message allows you to compose a new message as the name implies
Messages are strictly between you and the person who sent or received it and can’t be viewed by anyone else unlike the ‘wall’
Events
Events are invitations to real life events (again as the name implies) and they also let you know when it is any of your friend’s birthdays
People can create events and invite anyone on their friends list (you are also able to do this)
When you receive an event invitation, you are given a brief description of the event and the 3 options (as in the lower picture) to respond with
Friends
The friends section allows you to find new friends and see who (of your current friends) has changed their profile picture
However the easiest way to navigate to your friends profile page is to use the search bar
Once on your friends profile you can follow the links in the sidebar on the page to navigate through their profile viewing their photos, wall, information or friends
Friend’s Profiles and the Wall
As mentioned in the previous slide, going to a friends profile allows you to view their photos, videos, information and their wall
The wall is the main part of a person’s profile
It displays all the status updates exclusively about them (that they have posted) as well as allows other people to post on their wall (write something…)
Anything posted on a wall can be viewed and commented on by anyone who is friends with the person (even things you write to them) so it is a lot less private than sending messages
To view your own wall click the profile button in the top right corner
Friend Requests and Notifications
In the top left corner ext to the facebook logo are 3 icons
They are friend requests, messages and notifications respectively
The friend requests is fairly self explanatory, anyone who wants to add you as a friend sends you a friend request which you can either accept or decline
The messages button is basically another way of viewing your inbox
The notifications is the icon of the world It basically notifies you when someone posts on
your wall, comments on something you have posted a comment on or liked (for example someone else's status), sends you a message or invites you to an event
It gives you an easy shortcut to whatever you are being notified about and it tells you about notifications you may have received while offline
The notifications is handy in that it keeps you informed about anything involving you
