We Have Turned the Corner
By Rozy, April, 2019
In late January we
learned that Jim
has Pancreatic
cancer. The first
hints were given
on a Fitwalker
Sunday Stroll the previous January of 2018.
He was leaning while walking and shuffling
his feet. That is a sign of dehydration.
When we checked him out, he had a full
blown case of diabetes with a blood sugar
level of 450 and an A1C of 6.6. We didn’t
know it then, but our pancreatic doctor says
they know it is a sign of the cancer.
Another sign is 71, the age Jim reached that
month.
Many other signs (weight loss, stomach and
back pain, nausea, loss of appetite) were
later attributed to his success in conquering
diabetes and to the medicine Metformin.
Doctor visits in August and November
confirmed this. The blood test was negative
and the ultrasound showed nothing. (Later
we found the blood test was for pancreatitis
and the sonogram was clouded because of
stomach gas.)
In late January a CT scan was done and the
correct blood test C-19. The test was off
the charts! Luckily, the cancer has not
spread to his liver or lungs. It is called
locally advanced. It cannot be surgically
removed as it is wrapped around his artery.
Chemotherapy began March 18th. Jim’s
weight was 129 lbs. The next week he had
gained 1 pound. Today is his 3rd treatment
and we think he will have gained more.
Thanks to our daughters providing meal
plans and tracking calories and proteins, we
have turned the corner. Jim feels better
and stronger than any
time in the last two
months. The doctors say
walking is the best
exercise for now.
Hopefully you will soon
see him at an event! We are in it to win it!!!
April 7
Jim was unable to receive his third chemo
due to low white blood count. Then later
this week he noticed that he is losing his
hair!! I may have to send you a picture just
of him and his hair loss! He is feeling
better, though, and has been out to
restaurants, toy store (Harbor Freight)
shopping, and visits to the neighbors and his
Mom. Due to two weeks off Chemo, we may
go to the coast for a few days next week.
April 24
Jim has two chemo treatments, then two
weeks off. He has now had two more weekly
treatments and we are hoping that his blood
count is up enough for a third treatment
this Monday. His off the chart test CA 19-9
has been cut almost in half after only three
treatments!! No bad side effects so far...
just some hair loss.
Rozy
P.S. Jim is wishing to do some fishing. If
anyone has the talent and time, he is willing!

May 7 Explore Toledo Oregon The Coastal Gems invite you to explore Toledo's Ridge and River. Come join us as we go up a bit and down a lot to explore most of this old lumber town and the Yaquina River. Our route is broken into three sections and takes advantage of the gentler slopes with only one seriously steep hill. There is even a section with almost no incline. Feel free to accompany us on the whole six miles or whichever section or sections suit your needs and enjoyment. Our distance and speed of walking is tailored to those at the walk. Walking sticks and sturdy shoes recommended. This is the Oregon coast so layer your clothing and bring rain gear plus something to carry said clothing when the sun comes out. We walk with or without sunshine. Meet inside the J. C. Market, 336 NE US-20 Business, Toledo, OR at 9:45am for registration,
then drive to the walk start at 10am. Please use street parking when possible. Info: Maryann at (541) 961-4279 for more information or email us at yachatscoastalgems@gmail.com.
