• General– Be a veterinarian, Extension Specialist or Ag Educator1.– Have a D.V.M. or B.S. or equivalent experience in

Animal Science or associated field3.– Have two years of recent, documentable swine production

experience3.– Former PQA Plus Advisors are not grandfathered into PQA

Plus version 2.

• General• Training and Examination

– Attend a PQA Plus Advisor training session conducted by a PQA Plus Trainer.

– Successfully complete and pass an examination covering PQA Plus Good Production Practices 1-10 and the on-farm site assessment process.

The examination may be retaken twice in one session or attendance at another training session will be required.

– No National Pork Board fees are required.

Advisor Application Process

• Advisor submits application to Trainer• Trainer reviews application to determine if

applicant• If applicant is denied, an appeal to the National

Pork Board may be submitted

Administering the Advisor Test• Exams & Answer Keys will be generated by Trainers on the

Pork Checkoff Certification password portected site– www.pork.org/login– Good Production Practices 1-10– Assessment Process– Emphasis on GPP 10 and assessment process

• Pass/fail level is 90% = Only missing 3 questions• Exams may be retaken twice in one session, 3 total

Certifying Advisors

• New Advisors– The Advisor will receive an email acknowledging a passing certification

as well as instructions to the password protected site, where the Advisor will set up User ID and Password

• Recertification of Advisors– For Advisors you have trained previously, access www.pork.org/login,

click on “certification search” once the Advisor name has been located and selected, check the “Add Certification box” then complete the class date section.

– Temporary User ID will not work

• Timely submission is Trainer responsibility.

Advisor Responsibilities• Conducting training sessions for producers.

– Face to Face – Online training

• Administering and scoring Endorsement exams.• Conducting on-farm site assessments.• Following the PQA Plus Program requirements when

conducting training sessions, administering examinations and conducting site assessments to insure the program’s standards are met.

Advisor Responsibilities cont’d

• Reporting producer name and contact information to the National Pork Board for individual PQA Plus certification and/or endorsement to conduct site self-assessments.

• Reporting to the National Pork Board the site has met the qualifications for PQA Plus Site Status.

• Reporting on-farm site assessment data following an assessment.

• Being available for producer consultation during and following a site assessment.

• Providing assistance to producers related to audit compliance issues as needed.

• The role of a PQA Plus Advisor is critical to the

success of the PQA Plus program.

• Adherence to the PQA Plus Advisor guidelines

protects the integrity of the pork industry and

pork producers, while promoting a positive

image to the consumers of U.S. Pork.

Professional Ethics• Follow the PQA Plus program’s standards to the

best of your ability

• Protect and preserve confidentiality of client/producer information

• Properly advise producers/clients on their need to seek information and services from other experts and specialists

• Uphold these guidelines by precept and example and encourage others to do the same

CERTIFICATION

Producer Certification

• Certification– Test component

Open book Producers may miss 3 questions, scoring a 85% to pass. Producers may retake the test 3 times. PQA Plus Trainers/Advisor will score the exam at the time of

the training.

– Online certification Online certification is available for re-certifications ONLY.

New certifications have to be completed face to face with a PQA Plus Trainer or Advisor.

Producer Certification Notices

• Certification– All receive hard copy via mail– All receive electronic copy via email, upon request– Advisors may view, email & reprint from on-line Web

site http://www.pork.org/login

• Certification Expiration– 6-8 weeks– Phone calls– Need email addresses

SITE STATUS

What is a PQA Plus site?

• Defined by the nationally standardized Premises Identification Number (PIN).– A seven-character alphanumeric code

• Premises ID registration occurs through the state level.

• States will use the national premises allocator to generate the standard PIN.

• For more information on the Swine ID Plan go to www.pork.org, search for “Swine ID Plan.”

Site Assessment

• Occurs two ways– PQA Plus Advisor– Self Assessed (Endorsed Individual)

Two categories of self-assessments – Self-assessment-producer– Self-assessment-field staff

• Site Assessment Form– If completed by an endorsed producer, check “Self”– If completed by a PQA Plus Advisor, check “PQA Plus Advisor”

• Completion of a site assessment and then entry of site assessment data results in Site Status

Site Status – Advisor Assessment• General

– Be identified by a premises ID number.– Before assessment data can be reported and site status granted there

must be a producer-designated PQA Plus Certified individual (the person with the most stable relationship/responsibility with the production on the site) associated with the site.

• Assessment– Have the Site Assessment conducted by a PQA Plus Advisor.– Before assessment data can be entered and site status granted, a

signed written action plan needs to be completed for all non compliances identified in the current site assessment and returned to the PQA Plus Trainer/Advisor.

– No National Pork Board fees are required.• Status

– PQA Plus Site Status issued based on confirmation through the NPB database that there has been a PQA Plus Site Assessment and a designated producer with a current PQA Plus Certification is linked to the site.

– Site Status is good for three years from the date of assessment. Confirmation of site reassessment and PQA Plus Certification of a producer linked to the site is mandatory to renew site status.

Producer Endorsement

• General– Hold a current PQA Plus certification.

• Training and Examination– Be trained in conducting a PQA Plus Site Self-Assessment by a PQA

Plus Advisor.– Successfully complete and pass an examination covering PQA Plus

Good Production Practice 10 and the on-farm site assessment process. The examination may be retaken twice or another training session will be required.

– No National Pork Board fees are required.• Endorsement

– PQA Plus Site Self-Assessment Endorsement is good for up to three years based on the PQA Plus Site Self-Assessment Endorsement training date but is not to extend past the individual’s PQA Plus Certification expiration date.

– Retraining is mandatory for re-endorsement on, orafter, the expiration date of the PQA Plus certification.

• Advisor attaches endorsement to PQA Plus Certification following successful training and exam– There are two categories of self-assessed endorsements: Self-Assessment-

Producer and Self-Assessment-Field staff. Advisors need to identify which category the individual meets.

• No new certificate is issued unless requested or reprinted• Endorsement is valid for length of current PQA Plus certification• Following a producer self-assessment, the Advisor is responsible for submitting assessment data

on the Pork Checkoff password site.

Site Status – Self-Assessed• General

VERIFICATION PROCESS

Third-Party Verification: Objectives• Measure the effectiveness of the PQA Plus program, not to

find farms that are not in compliance– Use aggregate assessment data and verification data to identify

areas for additional education and training in pork production

– No removal of Site Status

• Provide credibility to packers and customers

• Provide an alternative to every farm audited every year– Statistically valid random sample

• Enable Pork Checkoff to pay for third-party verification element

• Create one set of industry-developed criteria to avoid confusion and extra cost

How will verification process work?• All sites with Site Status will be in a pool from which

sites will be selected

• Producer will be given official notice and information on how to schedule an appointment with third-party verifier

• Completed by third-party, PAACO-certified verifier during agreed upon date/time

• Verifier submit report to third-party database, and send producer information

• Producers work with their advisors to address any issues identified during the verification process

• National Pork Board uses aggregate verification data to identify areas for additional education and training to promote continuous improvement of the pork industry
