Areas of Improvement Identified by 2011 Third

Party Verification Process

• The results are similar to the assessment data.

• Areas for improvement include: – Medication and Treatment Records

• Results show we are not keeping the records for the year, or we are not recording the required USDA minimum information.

– Daily Observation Records

• Need to include initials or name of the person that was in the barn checking, not just a check mark.

– Facilities

• The biggest thing here was the assessment also included the load out areas (missing cleats were the biggest area seen).

Third-Party Verification

• Moving forward

– 2012 contracts with: USDA and Validus

– PACCO Training

• Recertify verifiers

• Certify new verifiers

– Site Verifications are well under way and we are down to the last couple sites to get scheduled.

Third-Party Verification: Objectives

• Measure the effectiveness of the PQA Plus program, not to find farms that are not in compliance – Use aggregate assessment data and verification data to identify areas

for additional education and training in pork production

– No removal of Site Status

• Provide credibility to packers and customers

• Enable Pork Checkoff to pay for 3rd party verification

• Provide an alternative to every farm audited every year – Statistically valid random sample - achieve a 95% confidence level that

at least 99% of farms are successfully implementing the elements of PQA Plus

– Create one set of industry-developed criteria to avoid confusion and extra cost

Third-Party Verification: Objectives

• All sites with Site Status will be in a pool from which 90 sites will be selected

• Producer will be given official notice and information on how to schedule an appointment with third-party verifier within 45 days

– Mail or Email

• PAACO-certified verifier will complete the verification survey during agreed upon date/time

– Must use producer-provided biosecurity protocol or minimum NPB-provided protocol

• Verifier submits report to third-party database, and sends producer follow-up information

– If a non-conformance is found, producer works with their PQA Plus Advisor to develop a corrective action plan

– Plan must be submitted to third-party verifier, at which point that site is considered complete

– Advisors will be reimbursed for their time upon request and at that the completed corrective action plan has been received.

• Records

• Animal Observation

• Facilities

• Fourteen criteria evaluated through all phases of production:

– Gilts, sows and boars (breeding)

– Nursery and finisher pigs (non-breeding)
