What is it that you wish for your child?
Our acting Chaplain Wendy Scott asked this seemingly simple question of our year 13 Karori
parents during the chapel service on their last day at school. Initially there was silence and
then gradually parents started sharing. Some of their responses were:

This time of the year I often have people saying to me ‘oh things must be starting
to wind down at school’. This causes me to smile as Term 4 is probably the most
frenetic term of all, and follows a rather busy Term 3.
Here are just some of the Karori Upper School highlights.
During Term 3 we had the magnificent House Music competition towards the end
of term. The extraordinary thing this year was the amount of student innovation and
creativity shown within the chosen pieces. The annual Swainson Concert was the
show case for the talented musicians in the school.
In Term 4 Leadership appointments were made for 2012 - involving speeches
and voting; the Fashion Parade highlighted the creative skills in the technology
department and introduced girls to modeling and dance; Old Girls Day saw nearly
100 Old Girls – of all ages, converge on Marsden for Chapel, Breakfast, Assembly,
Tours, AGM and of course the Decade Dinner.
The Cultural Awards night provided a venue where the music, drama, debating and
performance in the school could be celebrated – a truly creative experience. Our
sportswomen were celebrated at the Sports Awards dinner the next evening and the
crowd was impressed by the large number of girls who have represented Marsden at
Wellington, North Island and National level.
The inaugural Senior Art Exhibition displayed the diverse and imaginative work by
the Painting, Photography and Design students. The annual Creativity Symposium
occurred recently for year 9 students. For three days they were informed,
investigated, imagined and created round the theme of Earthquakes. One highlight
was the live Skyping session with students from Avonside Girls.
Of course through all this time the senior students had mock exams and students
in years 11-13 are currently sitting their final NCEA, Cambridge and Scholarship
examinations.
Personally the Chapel Service and breakfast for the year 13 students was a moving
and inclusive end to formal school for the students.
Still to come are more examinations, the community carol service, the school carol
service, prize giving, final assembly and the ultimate in events – the Leavers Ball.
So school is certainly winding up for the year – but in a grand and exciting fashion!

We would probably agree with most if not all of these. However we don’t actually test for
these at Marsden – where is the ‘courage exam’ or the ‘joy’ short-course? We don’t report
whether your child has ‘achieved’ wisdom or gained an ‘excellence’ in fulfillment!
What we do know is that working together with parents, our community demonstrates the
meaning of those wishes, through our thoughts, our words and our actions. Striving to be
the best we can be in all areas enables us to experience these feelings.
Our Christian traditions, our values, our morals – our central spirit combines with passion to
create our special environment. Parents sometimes question the time we spend at school on
things not strictly academic. I rigorously defend these other experiences as they combine with
the academics to provide the excellent holistic education we value.
What is that you wish for your child?
“But warm, eager, living life- to learn, to desire, to know, to feel, to think, to act. That is what
I want. And nothing else. That is what I must try for. “

Although it is not compulsory for students to have their own
devices, students from Year 7 through to Year 13 are welcome
to bring them to school.
We do not prescribe or recommend particular digital devices,
but suggest you consider purchasing protective covering for
the device, as students move frequently between classrooms.
The school requires devices to have internet accessibility and to
contain a recording function. As with other belongings, it is
the students’ responsibility to look after their equipment.
The school will do its best to support student equipment but
responsibility for hardware and software issues rests with the
owner.

Marsden Gala 2013 Sunday 10 March
The wheels are rolling but the Gala Committee needs YOUR help. The Marsden Gala calls on
the entire school community to work together to raise money while having lots of fun.
For those of you who have yet to do your “spring clean” we need saleable items from your wardrobes,
toy boxes, garages, and bedrooms. Last year’s unwanted Christmas present is always someone else’s
treasure! The dedicated Designer Clothes stall last year was a roaring success.
Remember no white ware or computers.
The Parents’ Association really appreciates your support.
We are currently looking for an Assistant Stall Holder Coordinator and Assistant Treasurer – can you
help in any other way, pre‐sorting, setup, providing equipment, donating ingredients, deli items, potting
plants and telemarketing? Email marsden.gala@gmail.com with your name, contact details and how
you can help.

Recently some Year 8 students helped to
decorate our Christmas tree and students
are now encouraged to bring in gifts that
can be distributed to needy families in
December. On Monday 26 November,
the Go Wellington bus will come to
Marsden at lunchtime and we will be able
to load in what we have collected. Boxes
are available in each form class where
students can place their gifts.
A guideline for gifts:
Christmas Mince Pies, Tinned fruit,
Confectionary, Tinned meat, Jelly,
Christmas Puddings, Christmas Crackers,
Toiletries, Hair products, New unwrapped
toys, Books, Board Games, Sports
Equipment
Last year Marsden was incredibly
generous and we would love to be able to
help families in need again in 2012.
During the recent holidays and the
first week of term four, 7 Year 10 girls,
accompanied by Miss Jennifer Stacey, visited
Toin Gakuen in Yokohama, Japan, a school
with which Marsden has a long-established
relationship. The group travelled with a
group of boys from Scots College.
The girls stayed in homestays with girls
from Toin who visited Marsden earlier in
the year. Most mornings were spent at the
school and included 3 hours of Japanese
language lessons. The afternoons focused
on Japanese culture, including ikebana,
glass blowing, pottery, the tea ceremony
and calligraphy. Also on the programme
were visits to a folk house museum and a
noodle museum.
Some longer trips away were also enjoyed,
with an overnight in Tokyo after spending
the day at Disneyland, and a three day trip
to see the sights of the ancient capitals of
Kyoto and Nara, travelling there and back
by bullet train.
On the final night a graduation ceremony
was held. The students were each
presented with a certificate form the Toin
International Exchange Student Programme
and performed in short skits to show off
their new language skills. The girls all
benefitted greatly from this trip to learn
about such a different culture, and there
were certainly some tearful farewells to
homestay families on the final day.

2012 NZIFST/CREST Student Product Development Challenge 2012This year for the first time a team of four Year 11 students enter this
challenge which is collaboratively organised by the New Zealand
Institute of Food Science and Technology and the Royal Society of
New Zealand. The challenge is judged as part of a competition but
also enables the students to achieve the prestigious Team Silver
CREST award if they fulfil the criteria for this. All students in Year 9
at Marsden work towards their Bronze CREST (Creativity in Science
and Technology) award.
The students, Freya Farrar, Jialin Sae-Jiw, Anna Singleton and
Nicole Rennie (with group name The Busy Bees) worked very hard
throughout the first three terms to research, develop and trial a
novel food product. Their final product was a healthy, gluten free
snack, of poppy seed and chia crackers and a coriander hummus.
As part of the process, the students worked with mentors from
the food industry – Futureintech Ambassadors Mrs Clare Chandler,
Mrs Ann Hayman and Mr John van den Beuken from the Ministry
for Primary Industries, who generously gave their time to provide
invaluable advice and expertise. The team also visited Rutherford
and Meyer (thanks to Ms Jan Meyer) an innovative New Zealand
company which makes gourmet foods such as fruit pastes as well
as the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health at Massey
University Palmerston North.
Thank you to the NZIFST nutrition Special Interest Group which
sponsored The Busy Bees and to Mrs Wendy Carroll (Food
Technology) and the Art Department who provided much valued
expertise.
The team gained Highly Commended in the Challenge and were
awarded their Team Silver CREST.

French Speaking CompetitionIn August, a number of French students took part in the annual
French Oral competition, run by the Alliance Française in
Wellington. Students were required to prepare a short speech
about themselves and then have a short conversation with the
judges.

Tree Planting
On 13 September, 52 Year 7 students left school at 10:50am and headed over to Makara Estuary. After a half-an- hour ride in a happily crowded bus we all picked up our spades and began our work.
We each planted three small trees, occasionally with the help of our supervisors from Zealandia, as the ground was very hard in places. In
the hour we spent at Makara, we managed to plant over 150 trees.
These were to beautify the area, to hold the stream bank in place and to provide a habitat for birds as well as improving the habitat in the stream by
shading the water.

Future of the PlanetYear 10 Geographers have been busy
thinking about the future of their
planet. Through the study of a variety of
global issues three students have taken
significant personal steps to think of
strategies to help solve some of our most
pressing problems.
Lauren Pearless entered the ‘Future U’
competition where teenagers were asked
to share their vision of New Zealand in
2050. Students were asked to create a
two minute video giving their unique
perspective on the future. Lauren was one
of only 13 who qualified and were invited
to Auckland for a final presentation.
Bridget Young and Sarsha Sivanantham
created a Twitter group about ‘Making a
Difference’ and have received interested
feedback from the Honorable Phil Heatley,
Minister of Energy and Resources, World
Vision UK and even Barack Obama’s
media team.

Marsden PrimarySince last writing there have been some
major events at the school. The girls
excelled themselves with a marvellous
production of The Jungle Book. It was
musical, colourful and we all had a
wonderful time putting it together and
performing it. At the end of Term 3 it was
lovely to welcome such a large group of
grandparents and special friends to the
school. They joined us at St Mary’s Church
for the annual Grandparents service,
visited classes, were treated to a fabulous
concert showcasing Preschool to Year 6,
and then concluded the event with lunch
in the Cultural Centre. Thank you to all the
parents who helped with these events.
Once again our ICAS results in English and
Mathematics have been very good. Girls
in Years 4-6 sit these papers and we are
delighted that 35-40 of them have achieved
awards from Credit to High Distinction. A
very special mention goes to Zoe Cooper in
Year 4 who scored the highest mark in the
country in the English competition and will
be presented with a special medal later in
the year. Well done Zoe.
The sun shone for Athletic Sports Day at
school, we were frankly surprised by the
beautiful weather and delighted that the
conditions were so favourable. Preschool
and the girls in Years 1-3 had their own
fun-filled events and had lots of fun on the
field. In Years 4-6 the events included: long
jump, high jump, sprints, quoits, vortex,
relays and house relays. Thank you to PE
teacher Cathrine Wilkinson for organising
such a successful event and to our parent
helpers.
Preschool had lots of fun dressing up for a
Halloween day at school. Throughout the
day they enjoyed Halloween arts and crafts.
They all went home with a spider lolly for
trick or treating later. Our girls and boys in
Preschool play an active role in the running
of the programme and many of their ideas
are incorporated into thematic projects.
We wish you all a happy Christmas and
holiday and look forward to seeing you all
again next year.

Marsden WhitbyAs the year draws to a close it is time to reflect on all the
marvellous achievements staff and students have realized this year.
Once again, Marsden Whitby staff and students have been involved
in a multitude of exciting, challenging and stimulating events and
some outstanding successes have been celebrated in 2012. In yet
another first for Marsden Whitby our Y13 History students enjoyed
an action-packed field trip to the South Island. Whilst there they
discovered the hardships of the early settlers who worked the gold
mines and who lived and worked in Denniston. It was an extremely
valuable experience for all concerned.
We had an enjoyable week with guests from schools in Nishio,
Japan, culminating in a wonderful farewell dinner event. The
Taiko drummers performed and the Nishio students sang and also
educated us all in the art of origami. Thank you to all the families
who hosted the group.
Congratulations to Mr Vaz and the two teams who represented
Marsden Whitby at the National Robocup Competition. The
senior team, comprising Tim Clarke, Adam Deery, Autumn Prow
and Joshua Prow won the Senior Theatre section outright, which
is an outstanding achievement, but all the students represented
Marsden Whitby with great enthusiasm and can be very proud of
their success.
Term 3 closed with an excellent Cultural Week, organised by Arts
and Cultural Prefects, Jono Sue and Nopera Dennis-McCarthy, and
the annual Showcase Concert once again highlighted the range of
musical talent amongst the students.
Congratulations to Terence Collins-Hawkins (Year 13) who was
presented with a Prudence Award at Government House on behalf
of the Australian Maths Competition organisers. The award,
presented by the Honourable Hekia Parata, was in recognition of
the student giving the most consecutive correct answers in the
recent Australian Maths paper. This is a highly prestigious award,
given to only a very small percentage of students.
