ExecutivesummaryAfterthegrandopeninginNovember2016,theyear2017wasthefirstyearinwhichtheTeaching&LearningLab(TLL)ofUtrechtUniversity(UU)wasoperational.TLLconsistoftwolectureroomsorlearningspacesforinnovativeteachingpracticesandastudioforrecordingeducativeclips.TLLwasusedextensivelyforinnovativehigherandsecondaryeducationcourses,forsummercourseandstudents’challenges,forICTandeducationaltrainingsessionsandworkshops.Inthestudio,numerousclipswererecordedforblendedandonlinelearningactivities.Inmonthlyinspirationcafés,professionalswithaninterestineducationinnovationgatheredandinNovember,over150visitorsparticipatedintheTLLAutumnFestival.TLLattractedhigh-levelnationalandinternationaldelegationsfromavarietyofeducationinstitutes,policy-makersandresearchers.In2017,TLLhostedatotalof39highereducationsession,threestudentchallenges,threesummercoursesandover35trainingsessionsandworkshops.Forsecondaryeducation,TLLhashosted55classes.ThelecturersusedTLL’sflexiblefloorplanandfurnitureandtoolssuchasinteractivewhiteboards,aninteractivewall,short-throwbeamersand360degrees-cameras.Duringtheacademicyear,thefloorspaceoccupancyoftheTLLlecture/experimentationsroomsisestimatedat70%.Inthestudio,75clipswererecordedusingthetransparentLightboard,42clipswithoutascreenand11clipswiththeinteractivewhiteboard.Manyoftheserecordingshavebeenorwillbeusedinprojectsaimingatonlineandblendedlearning.Anexactaccountofthenumbersoflecturers/teachersthathavemadeuseofTLLperfacultycouldnotbegiven.Weestimatethatapproximately50lecturersandteachersfromtheFacultyofSciencehaveusedTLLfacilities,10fromtheFacultyofGeosciences,10fromtheFacultyofSocialandBehavourialStudies,10fromtheFacultyofMedicine,10fromtheFacultyofHumanitiesand,finally10fromotherinstitutes,includingtheHogeschoolUtrechtandtheUniversityofHumanisticStudies.Afterthesummerof2018,TLLstaffwillfurtheroptimizetheteachingtools,trainusersofTLLfacilitiesandcontinuouslyevaluateallTLLactivities.Followingthe‘earlyadaptors’,alsothe‘earlyandlatemajority’ofteacherswillbestimulatedtotestTLLfacilities.TheuseofTLLandresearchfacilitywillbepromoted,aswellasthepotentialfordistancelearning.Inaddition,TLLwillforgenewcollaborations,e.g.withotherregionaleducationalinstitutes,promotethedesignofresearchprojectsinthefacilities.TLLwillhosttherecentlystarteduniversityproject‘futurelearningspaces’.inwhichneweducationalset-upswillbedesignedandtested.TLLisinitiatedandhostedbytheFreudenthalInstituteoftheFacultyofScienceandsupportedbytheFacultyofScience,theCentreforAcademicTeachingandtheEducate-ITprogram.Inaddition,TLLcooperateswithsuppliersofequipment,includingthecompaniesRicohandHP.ThisreportprovidesabriefoverviewoftheactivitiesthattookplaceinTLLin2017andapreviewon2018.

1.DescriptionofTLL,asofJanuary20181.1Lecture/experimentationroomsTheTLLhastwolecture/experimentationrooms:Largeroom(BBG3.22) Thelargelecture/experimentationroom(30tot40persons)issuitableforavarietyofeducationalsettingsandpedagogicalresearch.Onrequest,alectureorlessoncanberecordedbyobservationcamera’sfixedontheceilingor360degrees-cameras.Thereisaninteractivewallforteamwork(Nurevaspan),benchesalongthewindows.Theset-upofthefloorcanberearrangedusingmobilescrumtables(6-8persons)thatareadjustableinheight,smalltwo-persontablesandchairs. Smallroom(BBG3.19)Thesmalllecture/experimentationroom(upto25-30persons)isusedabreak-outroomandroomforworkshops,trainings,lecturesandinspirationcafes.Similartothelargeroom,itcanbefurnishedwithmobilescrum-tables,small,tables,chairs.Inbothlecturerooms,additionalequipmentcanbeplaced,suchasoneorseveralInteractiveWhiteboards,learningtables(horizontalmulti-touchtables),short-throwbeamersandlaptops.IntheFallof2017,theobservationcamera’sandinteractivewallhavebeeninstalledandtested.UsersofthelectureroomsaresupportedbyTLLandEducate-ITstaff.Inaddition,userscanvisittrainingworkshopsonICTequipmentofferedbyTLL.1.2StudioIn2017,thestudioisfullyequipped.Lecturersandotherusers,suchasstudentshaveusedisextensively.Professionaloperator-supportedrecordingsInthestudio,anoperatorsupportsthelecturerinpreparinginadvance,duringthestudiosessions(studio-set-up,light,sound)andeditsthevideo.Inadditiontoasimple

videowithwhiteorstandardbackground,theuserscanchoosetouseaGreenscreen,LightboardorInteractiveWhiteboard.InaGreenscreenvideo,anypicture,illustrationormoviecanbeintegratedinthebackground,duringediting.TheLightboardactslikeatraditionalblackboard–thelecturerspeakswhilewritinganddrawing–exceptthatheisfilmedthroughaglassplate,theLightboard.Inthisway,thosewhowatchtheclipseethelecturerfacedtowardsthecamera.ThetextontheLightboard,whichisinmirrorwriting,isflippedduringediting,sothatitcanberead.Finally,thelecturercanuseaninteractivewhiteboardforhispresentationandisfilmednexttoit.Do-it-yourselfrecordingsTheTLLstudiocontainsaset-upfordo-it-yourselfrecordings,whichcanbereservedbylecturerswhowanttomakeaclipthemselvesandstoretheminMymediasites.Thedo-it-yourselfset-upisoneoffiveinUU(campusandcitycentre).2.Highereducation2.1CoursesforECTSAnumberofregularcourses(forECTS)wasstagedintheTLL.Thisincludesthe‘WetenschapperinAdvies’masterbyJaspervanWinden,acourseof12sessionsofbetweenhalfandoneday,inSpringof2017and2018.Recently,VanWindenhasupdatedhiscourse,usingacombinationofblendedlearning(clipstobestudiedinadvance)andmoreinteractionamongstudentsandwiththelecturerduringsessions.Healsotestedclassroomarrangements,inwhichthestudentsareseatedinteamsaroundscrumtablesandthelecturerispositionedinthemiddle.Byusingsixinteractivewhiteboardsandbeamerssimultaneously,allstudentscouldfollowhispresentations.Courseevaluationshaveshownthatasaresultoftheroomsettings,studentsfeelmoreconnected-thiswasespeciallythecaseformen.Inaddition,theuseofclips(ScalableLearning)wasassessedpositivelybystudentsandteacher.BasedontheseevaluationsJaspervanWindenwasawardedaprizeoftheFacultyofScience’sdepartmentofbiology.Twiceayear,theTLLhoststheCoChallenge,atwo-weekuniversity-wideelectivecoursefor25-30students(thirdyearbachelorsandmasters).ThemunicipalityofUtrechtprovidesthechallengeandaftertwoweeksofhardwork,studentteamspitchtheirideasandvisiononsolutions.IntheOctoberchallenge,thetopicwas:‘Co-create:life’sprofessionalchallenges’In2017,thefollowingcoursesweretaughtinTLL:Month Course TargetGroup Nrof

2.2StudentchallengesInadditiontotheCoChallenge(see2.1),TLLhostedtheSproutCreatorcompetitioninNovember,aimedatdevelopingeducativeapplicationsfortheSproutcomputer,InMay,TLLalsohostedtheone-dayAdvidentchallenge,forconnectingstudentswithorganizations,suchascompaniesandNGOs.2

2.3SummercoursesNumeroussummercourseswerestagedatTLL,includingtheannualtwo-daysummercoursebyEducate-it,aimedattheuseofITToolsandatwo-weekcourseonmathematicseducationbytheFreudenthalInstitute.2.4WorkshopsandtrainingsessionsIn2017,over35workshopandtrainingsessionshavebeenorganized,includingtrainingsessionsforthevariousICT-tools,educationalapproaches,andmasterclassesoncurriculumdesign.Aselectionofhighlights:‘Blendedlearning’byEducate-IT,‘Aclassroomthatworks’byLive-longLearning,‘Educationin2032’byPaulSchnabel,‘ABC-workshopRedesigningacourse’,byUCL,‘Inquiry-basedmathematicseducation’bytheFreudenthalInstitute.33.Secondaryschoolteaching3.1U-TalentclassesBothlectureroomsareextensivelyusedbyU-Talent,aUUprogramfortalented15-18secondaryschoolstudentsfrompartnerschools,whoarebeingtaughtsciencelessonsbyspecializedteachers/lecturers,fromtheFreudenthalInstituteandpartnersschools.In2017,55classeswereorganized,inwhich26-30studentsparticipated.Intheperiod,January-April2018,theseclassescontinued,twodaysaweek.Inparticular,teachershaveusedthemobilescrum-tables,smalltables,chairsinvarioussettingsandoneorseveralinteractivewhiteboards.43.2SummercoursejuniorYoungpupils,aged10-14,areimmersedinscienceforawholeweek.Thissummerschoolhasbeenorganizedoncein2017andwillbeorganizedtwicein2018.3InJanuary-May2018,theseriesofworkshopscontinued,e.g.ontopicsas‘Createyourowncourse’and‘Eenwerkgroepruimtediewerkt’.Also,numeroustrainingsessionsfortheuseoftheinteractivewhiteboards,theinteractivewallandtheobservationcamerashavebeenorganized.4InSpringof2018,severalteachersindicatedthatoperatingthewhiteboardswaschallenging.ThishasledtoanumberoftechnicalandsoftwareadjustmentsandatrainingsessionattheendofJune.

In2017,TLLhosted18tours.4.3AutumnFestivalEveryautumn,TLLorganizesandhoststheTLLAutumnFestival.In2016and2017150-200participants,secondaryschoolteachersandstudents,lecturers,partnersfromindustry,policy-makers,researchersvisitedthefestival,wheretheycouldattendsessionsontopicssuchasneweducationalapproaches,newtools,ARandVR,etc.4.4OthereventsTLLisprimarilyaimedathostingeducation-relatedevents,suchascourses,workshops,challengesandeducationsresearch.However,whenthefacilitiesareavailabletheroomsarealsousedforresearchmeetings,PhDmeetings,visionmeetingsandotherUU-institutes(in2017,55times).5.StudiorecordingsSimilartothelecture/experimentationrooms,forthestudio,2017hasbeenapilotyear.

ProjectbytheFreudenthalInstitute,aimedatdevelopingacourseforin-servicephysicsteachersonEinstein’sspecialrelativitytheory.Inthisproject,a100%onlineversioniscomparedwithablendedversion.In2017,afirstsetofLightboardclipswererecorded.Thiswillbecontinuedin2018andinthesecondhalfof2018,thesecourseswillbeimplementedandevaluated.6.2Onlinelearning-MathematicsDonlinecourseProjectbytheFreudenthalInstitute,aimedatdevelopingacourseforsecondaryschoolchildrenwhoaretaughtthesubjectWiskundeD(MathematicsD).Becauseofashortageofmathematicsteachers,teachingasubjectwhichisfollowedbyonlyafewstudentsperschoolisproblematic.Byofferinganonlineversionforhavo(vwoalreadyexists),studentscancontinuefollowingthissubject.In2017,afirstsetofLightboardclipswererecorded.Thiswillbecontinuedin2018andin2019,thecoursewillbeimplementedandevaluated.6.3OnlinecourseaboutcontextsandmodelsinmathematicseducationforIndonesiaProjectbytheFreudenthalInstitute,aimedatdevelopingacourseforpre-servicemathematicsteachersatPalembangUniversityinIndonesia.Studentsareofferedanonlinecourseinmathematicseducationandonlinelivecoaching.In2017,4Do-it-Yourselfclipshavebeenrecordedfortheonlinecourse.Thesehavebeenpilotedin2017byIndonesianPhDstudents.Then,theimprovedcoursehasbeenscheduledinSpring2018.TheintentionistousetheRicointeractivewhiteboardsfortheonlinelivecoaching.Forthispurpose,theplanis,in2018,toshipaninteractivewhiteboardtoPalembangUniversity.6.4MonkeyRealityInthisproject,footageofthebehavior andactivitiesofthelong-tailedmacaques atBPRCiscollectedbyplacinga360ºcamerainsideandintheoutsideenclosureofthemonkeys.Thisfootage isusedforboth,educationalandresearchpurposes.CooperationwithRicohUtrechtUniversitycooperateswithRicohcompanyininnovatingeducationaltools.TLLcanmakeuseofRicohequipment,includinginteractivewhiteboards,short-throwbeamers,360ºcameras,learningtablesandcommunicationsoftware.Thewhiteboardsandshort-throwbeamersareusedinthelecture/experimentationrooms,thelearningtablesinmasterstudentprojectsandthe360ºcamerasintheMonkeyRealityprojectinwhichrecordingsofmonkeysaremadeforeducationalpurposes.Thetoolsaretestedinvariousprojects,includingdistancelearningaswellasduringdailyuseinthelecturerooms.

7.Previewon2018/20197.1Shorttermactivities(startingin2018)OptimizingtheuseoftoolsBasedonthefeedbackoflecturers,TLLstaffandstudents,softwareandhardwareissuesintheInteractiveWhiteboardshavebeenandwillberesolvedbyRicohmid-2018.TeachingusersTLLstaffhasorganizedtrainingsessionsforvarioustools,including:
1. TwotrainingsessionsforIWBusebystudentsupportstaff.AdditionalcoursesforU-TalentteacherswillfollowinJuneandpossiblyendofAugust
2. Twotrainingsessionsontheinteractivewall(Nurevaspan)forUUlecturersandstudents
3. Threetrainingsessionsontheuseofobservationcamera’sforUUlecturersandstudents
Moreover,UUstaffandstudentsareinvitedtotestthetools,duringmonthlyOpenLabsessionsEvaluatingTLLAllactivitiesstagedinTLLwillbeevaluated.Thelecturersororganizersofeventswillberequestedtocompleteasurvey.Inthissurvey,specialattentionwillbepaidtotheaddedvalueofTLLanditsequipmentandtools.PedagogicalresearchTheAugmented-RealitySandboxwasoneofthefirsteducationaltoolsinvestigatedinTLL;severalactivitieswereaimedattheSandbox.SincethearrivaloftheobservationscamerasinFall2017,othertypesofresearchwerestaged,includingfoursessionsoflessonstudies.Fromthesecondhalfof2018,newresearchprojectsinTLLareexpected.PromotingthelabamongpotentialusersPromotionalactivitiessuchasnewsletters,standsateducationevents,the(renovated)websitewillbecontinued.OnNovember30th,theTLLAutumnFestivalwillserveasamajoreventforshowingthelab’sbroadspectrumofactivities.Inaddition,anEduChallengeinwhichstudentsofROC-MiddenNederland,HKU,HU,UMCUandUUcooperatewillbestagedinTLL.InpromotingtheuseofTLLamongUUlecturers,extraattentionwillbepaidtofacultiesotherthanScience.5DistancelearningInNovember2018,UtrechtwillhosttheinternationalsummitoftheLeagueofEuropeanResearchUniversities(LERU).ThissummitwillfocusondigitalhighereducationandwillinformtheuseofdigitaltoolsbyTLL.

TheFreudenthalInstitutepreparesaprojectinwhichdistancelearningisusedtoteachphysicalchemistrytobachelorchemistrystudentsattheAntondeKomUniversityinParamaribo,Surinam.In2018,itwillbedecidedwhethertheprojectwillbecontinued.7.2Mid-termactivitiesNewcollaborationsFormutuallearningandinnovation,TLLwelcomes/requiresinputfromexternalpartners.TLLispartoftherecentlystartedSmartEducationPlatform,inwhicheducationinnovationlabsofotherorganizationsparticipate.ThisPlatformprovidesakick-startfordevelopingalongstandingandconstructivecollaborationswiththesepartners.NewprojectsTLLstaffconstantlycontactslecturersandmonitorsfundingorganizations(suchasNWO/NRO)foroptionsofdesigningandimplementingprojectsaimedateducationinnovationandresearchinTLL.In2018,theUU-wideproject‘FutureLearningSpaces’willkick-off.TLLcontributestotheEducate-itprojectFutureLearningSpaces.Specifically,ithasanimportantsignalingandexperimentationfunction. NewdidacticapproachesTLLstaffregularlyscoutsnewdidacticapproaches(includingICT-Tools).Ifneededandfeasible,newapproachesortoolswillbeacquiredandimplementedinTLL.
