Dear parishioners and friends of St. Joseph Parish,

Every new school year is a cause for celebra-tion. This year, it is especially joyous to welcome over 70 new students to St. Joseph School, as we joyously welcome our 200 returning students, as well.

We are so grateful to Dr. Louis Howe, Jr., for his wise and strong leadership of the School commu-nity as our principal. He has worked very hard with the teachers, staff, parents, and students to cultivate a safe, friendly, and faith-based environment where our students are challenged to grow intellectually, athletically, culturally, and spiritually.

We look forward, as well, to welcoming our new and returning young parishioners to our Reli-gious Education program under the direction of our new DRE, Mrs. Maria Merino-Schweitzer, who has hit the ground running and is off to wonderful start.

Many parishioners ask the parish clergy to remember their children or other family members in our prayers. We do so daily.

The French priest, Father Jean-Baptiste Henri Lacordaire, O.P., is widely considered the greatest pulpit orator of the nineteenth century. Many are, no doubt, familiar with Father Lacordaire’s poem entitled simply, ―The Priest.‖

In this poem, he writes about the priest as one who intercedes in prayer before God for another per-son, a family, a parish community, a city, a nation, or the world. The priest, he writes, is ―to go from men to God and offer Him their prayers; to return from God to men to bring pardon and hope.‖

In this column, I wanted to share a prayer composed by the great churchman, Désiré-Joseph Cardinal Mercier, the Archbishop of Mechelen and Primate of Belgium, who lived from 1851-1926.

The following is Cardinal Mercier’s Prayer to the Holy Spirit. This prayer is one I pray daily, and it can help believers open their souls to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, especially in the midst of life’s trials, hardships, and disappointments.

Cardinal Mercier writes, ―I am going to reveal to you the secret of sanctity and happiness. Every day for five minutes control your imagination and close your eyes to all the noises of the world in order to enter into yourself. Then, in the sanctuary of your baptized soul (which is the temple of the Holy Spirit) speak to that Divine Spirit, saying to Him;

‘O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, I adore You. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me. Tell me what I should do; give me Your orders. I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me and to accept all that you permit to happen to me. Let me only know Your Will.’

If you do this, your life will flow along happily, serenely, and full of consolation, even in the midst of trials. Grace will be proportioned to the trial, giving you the strength to carry it and you will arrive at the Gate of Paradise, laden with merit. This submission to the Holy Spirit is the secret of sanctity.‖

BETHANY MASS

This Sunday, September 12th, at the 5:00 PM Bethany Mass, we will remember our deceased parishioners: Yolanda LaPine, Gary Arconti, Dr. Paul Coleman, Jean & Daniel Heron, Robert Hutter, and Mark Mastrianni. Although we miss these parishioners’ physical presence, we celebrate their eternal life with Jesus. We want their loved ones to know that we are here to support them. Please continue to pray for all deceased parishioners, their families, and their friends.

Saint Joseph Music Notes

Today's proper antiphons all call to mind the sacrifice celebrated in the Sacred Liturgy by drawing parallelisms to the Old

Testament temple sacrifices. From the Introit, which includes the commonly quoted verse of Psalm 121 "I rejoiced when it was said unto me: 'Let us go to the house of the Lord'" which is also featured in the Gradual (the precursor to the responsorial psalm, and still a proper antiphon for the liturgy even in the novus ordo), to the Offertory antiphon "Moses consecrated an altar to the Lord, and presented thereupon burnt offerings and sacrificial victims; he made an evening sacrifice as a fragrant offering to the Lord, in the presence of the sons of Israel" this sacrificial content of today's propers is clarified, completed, and distilled into the Communion antiphon, which reflects today's Gospel text. "If a man wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me" reads this antiphon, chanted at the beginning of Communion. Let us on our own crosses offer ourselves in union with Christ's sacrifice, singing praise to our victorious King at the high feast of his own body and blood, the true sacrificial Lamb.

St. Joseph Church, through the leadership of Jennifer Suess, will be starting up three new p r o g r a m s t h a t are available to all

Catholic girls in the area and are being held in the Carmen Buck Religious Education Building starting in September.

Little Flowers, a mother-daughter program for girls in Kindergarten through 8th grade. (divided into two age groups for most of the meeting.) Meets first Tuesdays from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Little Flowers is a Catholic mother/daughter club centered on learning virtues, for girls and moms who want to grow in holiness. The Little Flowers program will help you make the conscientious effort required to cultivate virtue, for the love of God and for the good of the family. Virtues are learned through lively presentations led by mothers in the group, crafts and activities. Badges and medals for the virtues are earned by completing activities at home and are worn on a blue sash, uniting the girls to the Blessed Mother.

Little Women, for ages 11-13 (age on September 1st). Meets 2nd Tuesdays from 6:30 pm to 8 pm. Our meetings will consist of a mix of ice-breaker games to allow the girls to make new friends and work as a group on a creative project to draft a detailed proposal for a new movie. There is no guarantee that the movie pro-ject will go into production, but the girls will learn a lot about one or more saints, enjoy the creative effort, and learn the organizational tasks that go along with dream-ing up a new film idea. The balance of activities will be based on how the interest of the group devel-ops. Begins September 14th

BLAZE, for ages 14-16 (age on September 1st). Meets 4th Tuesdays from 6:30 pm to 8 pm. We will use the ―BLAZE Belong‖ program. Each meeting, the girls will be led through an ice breaker activity and a short lesson based on lies found in the world and truths found in Scripture. They will learn how to base their worth on being children of God, how to pray in their own words, and how to use the Bible as a tool for spiritual growth. Time for socialization! Begins September 28th
