Cat Introduces 824H Wheel DozerThe new 824H wheel dozer from

Caterpillar meets U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency Tier 3 emissionsstandards, while delivering outstand-ing performance, long life and lowoperating costs.

The new model retains the best fea-tures of its predecessor, includinghigh-efficiency, low-effort hydraulics,durable structures and a comfortablecab. It also incorporates newengine and cooling systemtechnologies, two additionalblade options and otherimprovements that make themachine easier to operateand service.

Emissions ReductionTechnologies

The most significantchange to the 824H is itsengine, a new Cat C15, ratedat 354 net hp (264 net kW)at 1,800 rpm. This six-cylin-der 15.2-L engine featuresACERT Technology, a Catemissions reduction solu-tion.

Key elements of theACERT Technology solu-tion include the following:

• A cross-flow cylinderhead that brings more cleanair into the combustionchamber and improves airdistribution, ensuring acleaner combustion process.

• A waste-gated, water-cooled tur-bocharger that also improves air flowand reduces emissions.

• A mechanically-actuated, electron-ically-controlled unit injection systemthat delivers micro-bursts of fuel to thecombustion chamber — just prior toand after the main injection — improv-ing control over emissions.

• A 32-bit ADEM IV control systemthat manages the fuel injection processand other power train operations withprecision and accuracy, reducing emis-sions, while boosting performance andmaximizing component life.

This combination of technologiesmakes the engine in the 824H clean,quiet, fuel efficient and compliant withthe latest emissions standards in theUnited States and the European Union.

The engine is electronically config-ured to provide constant net horsepow-er throughout the operating range, soproductivity remains high even whenthe engine is subjected to parasiticloads.

Straight-thread o-ring connectionpoints in the block deliver leak-free

performance, despite the engine’s highinternal pressures. The one-piece,gray-iron block has generous ribbingfor extra stiffness and heavy bearingbulkheads for rigidity and strength.

A one-piece, all-steel piston designmaintains structural integrity, despitethe 18:1 compression ratios in thecombustion chamber. Larger pistonpins, connecting rods and rod bearings

enhance durability. Metallurgical improvements to the

rod bearing also contribute to longerwear life. A newly-designed head gas-ket, made of graphite and steel com-posite, seals the combustion chamberwith better rigidity and wear capabili-ty.

Improved Performance,Operation, Serviceability The 824H incorporates other impor-

tant upgrades. Inside the cab, the controller has

been redesigned to include a tilt/tipswitch on the joystick for more con-venient operation.

A new automatic blade positioningsystem also makes the operator’s jobeasier. It automatically lowers theblade when the machine is shifted for-ward and raises it in reverse, improv-ing operator comfort and productivity.

To further reduce fatigue, a kickoutfeature allows the operator to raise andlower the blade without having to holdthe joystick in place.

The cooling system on the 824H hasbeen updated to enhance performance

and serviceability. The next generationmodular radiator has copper-alloycores, copper-brazed for high jointintegrity. Its tubes, side sheets, headerplate and tank are made of brass forextra durability.

Cooling capabilities also have beenenhanced through the use of a demandfan that automatically adjusts fanspeed to match coolant temperature.

To improve serviceability, pressuretaps for the electronic clutch pressurecontrol transmission have been relo-cated to a convenient spot behind thecab.

OptionsA 9-cu.-yd. (6.9 cu m) universal

blade is now available for the 824H.An extended wear blade package alsois offered as an option. It includes abra-sion resistant material on the blade,push arms and cutting edges, as well asguards for the tilt cylinders.

The wheel dozer can be outfittedwith an optional product link systemfrom Caterpillar. Product Link usessatellite technology and the Internet tomonitor machine location, servicemeter hour and product health infor-mation.

The machine also comes equippedwith all the brackets and wiring neces-sary to install the Computer AidedEarthmoving System (CAES) fromCaterpillar. CAES is an automatedproduction tool that combines onboardsensors, advanced control systems andGPS technology to improve efficiencyand reduce operating costs.
