Winners of contest donate to Erie Shriners Hospital

Connecting Hands of Erie, a nonprofit that raises funds for other local charities through garage sales, raised $5,000 for theStringsforaCure Foundation at a garage sale on March 6 and 7. Nathan Love wins JuniorPhilharmonic Concerto Competition

Nathan Love, a Crawford County high schooljunior and member of the Erie JuniorPhilharmonic, is the winner of the 2015 JuniorPhilharmonic Concerto Competition. In additionto a $300 prize, which is sponsored by the EriePhilharmonic’s maestro, Daniel Meyer, right,Nathan, a clarinetist, performed as the soloist atthe Erie Junior Phil’s Spring Concert in April, andhad his name engraved on the competitionwinner’s plaque. At the concert, Nathan playedthe first movement of Concerto No. 1, Opus 73 byCarl Maria Von Weber.

St. Luke student places 2ndin math competition

St. Luke School students compete in theChallenge 24 math competition every year.This year, a team of four students and oneteacher attended the competition, whichwas held in April at Seton Catholic School.In Challenge 24, a student is given fourdigits from 1 to 9. He or she can use anymath operation (addition, subtraction,multiplication and/or division) to equal 24.The answer always has to be 24. LukeMarkiewicz, a St. Luke School fifth-grader,took second place in the tournamentoverall in the fifth-grade division.

Upper Room celebrates20th anniversary

The Upper Room of Erie Inc. recentlymarked 20 years as Erie’s only daytimehomeless shelter. Anna Salvia and SalDiFabrizio were honored with the UpperRoom Founder’s Award during the dinnerand program held on the anniversary of theUpper Room’s opening date, March 6, 1995.They continue to volunteer at the shelterseveral hours each week.

Boy Scouts serve upspaghetti dinner in Meadville

Meadville Boy Scout Troop 244 began hosting an annualspaghetti dinner in 1964. This year it was held in April atFirst Presbyterian Church in Meadville, guest-hosted withTroop 209. The boys and their leaders served more than400 meals to their families, friends and neighbors. Amongtheir guests were the 2015 Miss Crawford County BriannaMarie Layman and Miss Crawford County OutstandingTeen Paige Coon.Troop members and their guests included, in the backrow, from left, Ethan Keyes, Joey Schupp, ChristianStyborski, Aryan Cotterman, Benjamin Lord, KenyaWilliamson and Josh Lord.
