    FAVORITE TEACHER

My most influential teacher came to me when I was a sophomore in high school. His namewas Mr. Martin. He had been a favorite to many that had passed though his classroom, and to

many that had not. History was the subject that he taught not the most exciting subject but hehad a special way of making it exciting. In addition to this he was also the golf coach for bothmen and women. He had a way of involving the entire class in every part of the class. Therewas never just a lecture to the class; you had to always pay attention because you wouldnever know when he would call on you to answer a question or to give your opinion on oneof the subjects of the day. Another facet of the teaching style of Mr. Martin that was soappealing to me was a firm belief in the concept of group work. Most of the assignmentsdone in class were done in a group. There was a different group for every assignment, whichmade it easier to meet people that you didn't know as well. The assignments for the classwere also assignments that were fun to do. The one assignment that stands out in my mindwas that every group was assigned a different decade. It was not just go to the book and pullout the information that you needed. You had to go to the book, go to the library, go to peoplethat had lived though your decade. It was get all the information possible. We would make

posters, design games to play, bring in food to eat. Make the class enjoy what you had to sayabout your particular decade. History was not the only thing involved with the class however.Every Wednesday we would play "battle of the sexes". The boys would ask questions of thegirls and the girls would ask questions of the boys. Everyone would look forward to this andthink of questions all week. Mr. Martin also made us think about the music that we listened to.We had an assignment where we had to find a song that had political meaning behind it. Wehad to present it to the class and explain why it was political and what the band was trying tosay. The reason that Mr. Martin is my favorite teacher is simple. When I sat down andthought about what I wanted to go to Michigan State to become I thought back to Mr.Martin's class? I thought what if I was the one who made students love class. What if I wasthe one that made them want to participate in class? What if I was Mr. Martin for just onestudent? Making them love school and love to learn this would be the greatest reward, betterthan riches better than fame. Mr. Martin is a great teacher. He has not only influenced me butcountless other students that I know and have talked to. He is truly one of the great teachers, impacting every student that walks though his class; he is an inspiration to us all.

Childhood is the best period of ones life. Do you agree?

    1. Describe briefly how many people treasure their childhood.2. Describe why childhood is the best period of ones life.

It is filled with fun and play. The child has no responsibilities or worries.3. Describe why childhood may not be the best period of ones life. This is true of children who are abused or exploited. There are also children who live in extreme poverty and who have to shoulder theresponsibilities of adults.4. Briefly conclude that any period of ones life can be good if it is approached with the rightattitude.

Many a time, I have longed for my childhood days. This is especially true at times when Iwould like to escape from the torture of examinations and homework. Furthermore, mychildhood was filled with countless memorable moments that I would love to relive. Many, who have happy childhood memories, would also, I am sure, feel the same.

Childhood is a period which is associated with fun and play. The child hardly cares or knowswhat the adult thinks of him. He frolics with his childhood playmates in the sand, mud orwater. Through his mother may chide him for his pranks, she may, secretly in her heart, wish

that she too could be as carefree and happy as her child.

Children normally do not have any major responsibilities to shoulder. Political, economic, social and family problems do not disturb them. They may be confused because they can notcomprehend the problem, but most of them will not go through heartbreaking moments overthem.

However, the above beautifully painted childhood phase is not true in the case of all children. There are children who are abused and exploited and who suffer from dire poverty. InEthiopia and other poor countries, children are afflicted with many diseases and continuallysuffer the pangs of hunger. They have to shoulder the responsibilities of adults, looking forfood and taking care of their younger siblings.

These cases, however, may be considered as exceptions. Many still feel that the averagechilds life is much merrier. Adult life is filled with responsibilities. Yet, responsibilities neednot be viewed negatively. There are many joys that come with responsibilities. For example, Ialways experience great joy and satisfaction when I do well in my exam after studying hardfor it.

Therefore, in my view, childhood can be looked back upon as one of the best periods in oneslife. With a positive attitude, a person can experience happiness in any period of his life.

    Wedding

Organizing a wedding is the most important thing in the world. Not many people remembertheir yesteryears. But when somebody asks them about their wedding, they will have a few

pleasant things to say. That is the entire charm and ambience of weddings. During a wedding, there are numerous glitches that should be overcome, in order to provide a unique and

pleasant experience for your family and friends.

To make a wedding memorable, the most important thing is to really know that your guestsare the most important. Keep your guests, including your family and friends, happy, and youare bound to receive more appreciation from your near and dear. Neither the luxuriousapproach, nor the amount of money spent can substitute a warm reception.

A wedding requires careful planning of all sorts. From deciding your wedding dates to thewedding reception, you need to be top notch in every form. Deciding your wedding date is

crucial, and is often season dependent. Usually the spring and the summer seasons are the best for weddings, with summer gaining the upper hand. Summer holiday season also helpsyou in relying on the fact that almost all of your family and friends will be able to attend themost important occasion of your life.

Make it easy for your guests, and if they are very particular on attending your wedding, merge your wedding reception and your wedding into one. This can help you save lots ofmoney. Some people still follow the rule of organizing a wedding reception at a later stage, even though most of their guests had attended their wedding. Never commit this kind ofmistake. If your guests are attending your wedding, you are most likely to give them a grandfeast; why should you bother spending even more money on throwing out a weddingreception.

In case you have a few guests who were unable to attend your wedding, make sure toorganize a small reception further from your wedding. Make it a couple of weeks later, whenall the heat of your wedding has died down, and trust me, this will help you reduce the cost ofyour private reception quite drastically, without compromising on the quality.

A Chinese New Year Celebration, Full Essay

Jan 10th, 2010 Category: Kids from Around the World

Hi. My name is Xin Nan, also known as Nancy here in New York. Did you know that in

China many people celebrate the New Year on February 14th? Although in the United States New Years Day is on January 1st, Chinese New Year is not! In China, there are two differenttypes of calendars lunar and solar. A solar calendar is a calendar that has to do with themovement of the earth around the sun. This is the one that everyone in America follows. InChina, they didnt start using this calendar until 1911. Before 1911, China used the lunarcalendar. The Lunar Calendar is based on the phases of the moon. Today, we use this mainlyfor traditions and celebrations. With these traditions, the Chinese Lunar zodiac calendar playsa big role. Twelve animals are assigned to each year and the animals, supposedly, characterize the people that are born in that year. 2010 will be the year of the Tiger. They arecharacterized as strong and short tempered.

I was born in year of Rat (1996). I am supposed to be respected and courageous and I am.Before I moved to New York, I used to live in Fu Zhou. In China, for one week every year, Igot to have red blankets. Why red? Red is the color that brings me luck for my New Year. Why did I need luck? My grades were not looking so good. Before New Years Day, mymother and I would go shopping for my new outfits. I could not wait to wear all my newthings. Everybody on New Years has to wear new clothes because we wanted to escape the

bad luck and begin with a fresh start. Although my grades werent that bad, I could still usemore luck. I usually didnt go to sleep that early, but I knew that I had to wake up earlier thanusual to get my red envelopes. Red envelopes were for luck as well. No.. no.. not more luckfor my grades, Im not really sure how the red envelopes bring me luck. I really just wantedthe money that was inside! The night before, I always stayed up wondering how much I wasgoing to get. Even though I had to give the money to my mom, I still got excited aboutgetting to hold onto that money for the day.

There are other things I loved about the New Years the food! There were dumplings andPeking duck. There were also candy melons, coconut, kumquat, longan, lotus seeds, lycheenuts, peanuts and red melon seeds. All these different kinds of food symbolize growth, goodhealth, unity, prosperity, fertility, joy, happiness and close family relationships.

Best of all, we have a 22 day vacation for the New Year in China! (too bad I dont still live inChina!) On New Years Day, I got to spend the entire day with my friends! These were not

just any friends; we were like sisters. I really really miss them. On New Years Day we bought a lot of firecrackers and used the firecrackers to play tricks on our neighbors. Forexample, we knocked on the door, and before the door opened we lit the fire crackers and putit in front of the door, than we hid. So when the door opened our neighbors would yell andmake the funniest faces youd ever seen! There were so many different types of firecrackers, like spider crackers and fish crackers. We played with them beside the rocks. My friendtaught me how to light them so that nothing else would catch on fire.

I always played with my friends during the day so that at night I could spend time with myfamily. We always ate dinner together and watched the New Year special show. When TheShow was on , all of China was quiet. The show was one of the most important parts of New

Years. They had it every year and each year it was different. The show began at 8PM andwent all the way to 12Am. 10 seconds before 12AM they would start the countdown and my

whole family will countdown with the TV. Everyone will shout the numbers out in front ofthe TV. Im sure it was really fun, but I wouldnt know I would always fall asleep beforethe show ended. Everyone always told me that the best part of the show is at the end! Andafter the show, everyone plays with the fireworks. My mom always woke me up after theshow even though I asked her to wake me up before the countdown started. She never did.

The fireworks were very nice. Every family had different kinds of fireworks. My grandmaalways bought those little fireworks that you could hold on one end of the stick and thefireworks sparkled from the other end of the stick. I always took two of them, held them eachin one hand, and danced around. I still remember one time when my grandpa almost lit our

backyard on fire. Dont worry, we got the little fire out. I hope this year the back yard wontcatch on fire again!

Even though Im in New York now, I can still celebrate my New Years with my family andnew friends. Even though it is one day in America, on New Years Day, I go to the paradewith my friends and have dinner with my family. I am not going to lie, New Years in Chinais much better! Come on, firecrackers, fireworks, and 22 days off! But I guess its not about where you are, but where your family is that makes it New Years.

to be cruel with the lonely girl. I wished I could have given her wings and made her fly awayand break the sadness of her heart. It seemed to me that I could never live in a place like that, and knowing that I would besurrounded in a nice, beautiful place but live a lonely life, I just could not make it. I think bymaking this conclusion to myself, I might be aware of the feelings of that girl. I think maybe

that is why she was feeling the way she was. I would feel the same thing.Life has a lot of adventures and my imagination was one big adventure, which I learned a lotfrom. I will never forget the look in her eyes and her loosen life in that place. It was then, when my brother called me and I had to leave the room. I wish I could go back there andtaken the girl with me. Every time I remember her eyes, I wish I could have been her hero.

    A Beautiful Place

I think we all have a beautiful place in our mind. I have a wonderful place that made mehappy a lot of times, many years ago. But sometimes I think that I am the only person wholikes this place and I'm asking myself if this place will be as beautiful as I thought when I will

go back to visit it again. Perhaps I made it beautiful in my mind.

This place is meaningful to me because it is part of the county I loved, is part of the countywhere I grew up and is part of my childhood. This place is in the country in an old regionnamed Appalachia, a small piece of the Appalachian Mountains, in a town named Pikeville.

Pikeville is a polluted town because of the coal industry. People live in apartment orcondominium buildings because of its little space available. I grew up in one of the many

buildings in Pikeville admiring from my bedroom window the beauty of the mountains, always exploring with my eyes the forest or the meadows, looking for a clean and quiet place. And, I found one on a hill in the back of the town. It is about 100 feet square, it has seven oldtrees, wild flowers and a lot of bugs and ants during summer time.

I used to go there to sit down on a rock and watch the town and my trees. There was a veryold tree, a maple tree, with a huge trunk. The others were smaller, three in the back, three onmy left side and the old maple tree on my right. There were flowers, many kinds, white, yellow, purple and blue. It was nobody's place. Nobody owned that hill, but it was beautifuland peaceful and I dreamed many times about a white house over there.

I think that, these kinds of places are meaningful to people because they are natural and people can be there alone, away from their everyday life.

I used to go there to be alone or to dream with my eyes open admiring the blue sky or theclouds. I liked to go there to lay down on the grass, listen to the wind, kiss the flowers andwatch the leaves moving. It was hard to go up the hill to get there, but I wanted to seeeveryday my seven trees, to see how the color of the leaves changed and to feel the softnessof the grass.

I used to go there with a reason or with no reason at all. I knew that I had to be there toforget who I am, to breath and re-feed myself with hope. That was the only place I could goto dance, or sing, or cry. That place was part of me. The wind was part of my breath, theleaves were part of my song, the flowers were part of my purity and the trees were my friendsthat I used to hug every time when I got there.

I used to go there even in winter to play with clean snow. In my native town, even after afresh snow, we got a gray-black layer of soot over the snow. All the town was covered withdirty snow.

During winter time my place was still beautiful. My trees had branches full of white, heavysnow. The flowers, the birds, the grass were gone, also the rock I used to sit on was hard to befound, but it was still peaceful, quiet and especially clean. The snow angels I made keptwatch over this natural splendor.

This place is far, far-away in time and space, part of my childhood and my adolescence. Itmeans a lot to me because it is beautiful and natural, is a clean and quiet place in a world ofnoise and dirty air. This place is maybe beautiful just in my mind, but it is one of the fewfriends I had, back in Romania. I really hope that the new construction will spare this placeand others like it, for these are the places that can bring us happiness.

    My Mystical Place

For a half hour, every school day, for a few months, I was really happy. A

friend and I would go to the drainpipe, and we would sit, talk, eat our lunches,

and listen to my walkman. It was the perfect place: It was quiet, beautiful, and

it was full of peace. It didn't matter whether it was cold or hot, somehow you

didn't feel anything sitting on that drainpipe. You would feel the wind on your

face, and it made your face cold, but inside, you felt warm and cozy, and you

almost felt like you couldn't be harmed. There was something magical about the

drainpipe. Maybe it was the fact that nobody was around except the two of us,

and we were tiny compared to the long grass surrounding us. Then again, it could

just been the freedom of knowing that we were listening to the walkman that was

banned from school, and we weren't getting caught. What ever it was, it doesn't

matter because analyzing something takes away the feeling it gives when you

think about it. It was just a great place, and it made me happy, and I don't

know why. That makes it better in a way, just knowing that it had that power.

Everyday, I would meet with a friend at the drain-pipe. That is until a

teacher found us and told us that because we didn't have any adult supervision,

we couldn't eat there anymore. It felt terrible. I wanted to stay there. I had

always thought that adult supervision was outdated by the time we were this old.

We had come to this place to get away from adults and all the other P.C. people

in this world, and now we had to join them again. At lunch time, I wander now,

using the tape player in any open classroom and get into screaming matches with

people, it's all just little kid fun anyway. Lunchtime isn't the same anymore. I

wish the teacher had never found us.

Even to this day, I go to the drainpipe. When things get to hard at home,

and I need to just escape, I make the excuse that I forgot a book at school and

I leave. I cross the soccer field, then the gym, sometimes stop at my locker to

put away my backpack, and I run to the drainpipe. I lay down in the grass, and

think about what ever is bothering me right now. I put my headphones in my ears

and blast the tape that is in my walkman. I'm transported.
