Q&A

Why not use a process simulator?Calculation Limitations
– Simulator does not do sizing calculations.
– Pressure drop methods do not include the acceleration term orcheck for choked flow which is important in high velocity Flare andVent calculations.
– Parameters specific to Flare Systems are usually missingRated flow for tailpipes, actual flow for headersInlet piping calculationsDo not predict velocity and noise problems
– API guidelines not built into calculations.

Why not use a process simulator?
Workflow Limitations
– Very difficult to handle looped systemsNeed simultaneous solver vs. a modular solver
– Multiple design scenarios are impractical because there is nodata synchronization.
Flowsheet Simulator – Each scenario is a caseFlarenet – Each case contains all of the scenarios

Why not use a process simulatorSimulator results are not acceptable
– For a new designLines sizes will be too small.
– For a ratingWill under predict back pressure.
– Do not conform to API design guides.
– Do not predict velocity or noise problems.
Can give an unsafe Flare System

Typical Uses and Benefits
Typical Uses:– E&C companies – for conceptual and detailed design
Reduces design time by sizing the flare networkFinds the min diameter for f lare header and tail pipes automaticallyEliminates trial and error method
– Operating companies – for debottlenecking, plant upgradeand feasibility studies
FLARENET sizes and checks network against design constraintsAny violations will be flagged clearly by the program

Typical Uses and Benefits
General Information– FLARENET designs or rates pipe networks against single or
multiple scenarios, eliminating data manipulations– Fittings pressure drop can be automatically generated or
calculated from fitting input– Fitting database customisable and password protected– Pipe Class Editor allows definition of standard pipe schedules
and sizes, can define project standards.– FLARENET will implement API 520/521 standards if required
