To enable you to identify the guard and it’s function

To reduce accidents that may

occur in the workplace

through the use of

machine guards and

other safety devices.

Crushed hands and arms, severed fingers, and blindness are a couple of examples of possible machinery-related injuries.

Safeguards are essential for protecting workers from preventable machinery related injuries.

“They told me I could become anything, so I became ground beef.”

Prevent contact - prevent worker’s body or clothing from contacting hazardous moving parts

Secure - firmly secured to machine and not easily removed Protect from falling objects - ensure that no objects can fall into

moving parts Create no new hazards – guards must not have shear points,

jagged edges or unfinished surfaces Create no interference - must not prevent worker from performing

the job quickly and comfortably Allow safe lubrication - if possible, be able to lubricate the

machine without removing the safeguards

Requirements for Safeguards

Guard: means shielded, fenced, or enclosed by a covers, casings, troughs, spillways or railings, or guarded by position or location.

Purpose: To prevent any part of the body from coming in contact with moving parts of machinery or equipment which could cause injury to personnel.

What is a guard, and what is its purpose?

Fixed Guard: Provides a barrier - a permanent part of the machine, preferable to all other types of

guards and most used.

Adjustable Guard: Provides a barrier

which may be adjusted to

facilitate a variety of production operations.

Self-Adjusting Guard

Provides a barrier which moves

according to the size of the stock entering

the danger area.
