The First Viruses
Computer viruses started in the late 1980s. The first viruses were on floppy disks. These disks stored the computer's information. People put i!_?. code onto a floppy disk. The i_r:_s_ would take over the computer. It would spread when people shared floppy disks.

recover.
Stock Market Crash of 1929
During the 1920s, Americans spent more money than they had.
The banks weren't acting much better. They invested money in
irresponsible ways.
By 1929, people stopped spending. Businesses died. People lost

Gravity
Freckle Level: 2C
'What goes up, must come down." This saying explains gravity.
Gravity is a force that pulls all objects toward each other. Think of a basketball falling from the net. That is 8.C?i_(X in action!
Gravity and Isaac Newton
In 1687, Sir Isaac Newton was sitting under a tree. An apple fell and hit him in the head. He guessed that there was a force pulling objects to the earth. That force was g_?i_(X.
A drawing of Isaac Newton under the tree
Newton discovered that 8.C?i_(X pulls objects together. It does not matter how heavy or light they are. Gravity is felt even from far away. It keeps our feet on the ground. It keeps the planets moving around the sun.
Gravity on the moon
You can only notice B.C?i_(X with huge objects like planets. The greater the mass of an object, the stronger its g_c?i_(X. The moon is much smaller than Earth, so its 8.C?tx is not as strong. This means that objects weigh less on the moon. They can take huge leaps because there is less 8.C?i_(X pulling them down!

Why do we not float off into space?
Air resistance keeps us on the ground.
Gravity keeps us on the ground.
Our weight keeps us on the ground.
Our mass keeps us on the ground.
Rl.3: Analyzing Connections
Where is gravity stronger: on Earth or on the moon?
1/3
Your weight changes on the moon since the moon's gravity is not
as strong.
In 1589, Galileo discovered that gi_txs pull is the same for all
objects. On Earth, air pushes against falling objects. If an object catches a lot of air, like a feather, it will fall slowly. On the moon there is no air. A feather and a bowling ball will fall at the same speed!
Thank You Gravity
Every planet has its own field of g-i_t_x. This field pulls objects toward its center. The further you get from Earth, the weaker its pull. That is why-!';.'!. float in space. :-YJ is much simpler when we just think about Earth. Gravity keeps our feet on the ground. Anything we throw up in the air will come back down!

Poince shoes
I joined a special program for young dancers when I was 15. It was for students who wanted to dance as a career. I learned so much!
I got my first job with a professional dance company when I was 18. It was a small role, but I did get to be in some shows. Sixmonths later, I earned a larger role in the company.

The Nobel Foundation is based in Sweden. The prizes are decided by committees. Each committee is made of experts and scholars. Different universities in Sweden host these committees. Even being one of the committee members is an honor.
Each December. an awards ceremony is held in Oslo, Norway for the Nobel Peace Prize and in Stockholm, Sweden for all other prizes. Each of the laureates usually gives a speech the week before the ceremony. Then. at the ceremony on the 10th of December. laureates are awarded a medal, a diploma and money.
All of the medals are coated in gold with a picture of Alfred Nobel on the front. A diploma is a paper that says the reason the prize was awarded. The money is usually worth about one million dollars. The money is not the most important part. The real prize is the honor of winning the award.

Stock Market Crash of 1929
During the 1920s, Americans spent more money than they had. The banks weren't acting much better. They invested money in irresponsible ways.
By 1929, people stopped spending. Businesses died. People lost trust in companies. They panicked by pulling their money out of the stock market.
The Effects of the Crash
Americans were worried they would need cash. Millions took their money out of banks, forcing banks to close.

Gravity
Freckle Level: 2C
'What goes up, must come down." This saying explains gravity.
Gravity is a force that pulls all objects toward each other. Think of a basketball falling from the net. That is g?i_t)'. in action!
Gravity and Isaac Newton
In 1687, Sir Isaac Newton was sitting under a tree. An apple fell and hit him in the head. He guessed that there was a force pulling objects to the earth. That force was 8.?i_t)'..
A drawing of Isaac Ne'Nton under the tree
Newton discovered that g?i_t)'. pulls objects together. It does not matter how heavy or light they are. Gravity is felt even from far away. It keeps our feet on the ground. It keeps the planets moving around the sun.
Gravity on the moon
You can only notice g?i!)'. with huge objects like planets. The greater the mass of an object, the stronger its 8.?i_t)'.. The moon is much smaller than Earth, so its 8.?i_t)'. is not as strong. This means that objects weigh less on the moon. They can take huge leaps because there is less g?i_t)'. pulling them down!

Gravity keeps us on the ground.
Our weight keeps us on the ground.

Where is gravity stronger: on Earth or on the moon?
1/3
Your weight changes on the moon since the moon's gravity is not
as strong.
In 1589, Galileo discovered that g,?:'.iY.s pull is the same for all
objects. On Earth, air pushes against falling objects. If an object catches a lot of air, like a feather, it will fall slowly. On the moon there is no air. A feather and a bowling ball will fall at the same speed!
Thank You Gravity
Every planet has its own field of $.?:'.i_tx· This field pulls objects toward its center. The further you get from Earth, the weaker its pull. That is why'.'}-- float in space. §!.:'J.!)'. is much simpler when we just think about Earth. Gravity keeps our feet on the ground. Anything we throw up in the air will come back down!
