A long-time member of the Oakville commu-nity theatre stage has formed an organization hehopes will help local underprivileged youthsthrough acting.

David Nash, the president of The OakvillePlayers theatre group, has started a programcalled Streetwise Actors Inc.

Streetwise Actors will bring together youths,aged 14-18, and teach them acting skills, stagemanagement and production, at no fee to the par-ticipants. Nash said the term “underprivileged”includes a wide definition.

Nash said it's more than just about teachingyouths theatre and drama.

“It gives them self-esteem, it gives them self-reliance, it gives them a disciplined environmentin which to work, it gives them a place where theycan self-discipline, work as a team and they can getquality feedback, for some of them, for the firsttime in their lives. They’re guaranteed to be able toperform,” he said.

Nash, who has directed numerous plays inOakville, has worked with a number of youths,both as actors and backstage on his productions.As an example he mentioned just one of the manyyoung people he’s worked with over the years, ashy young girl.

“She was very shy, she would hardly look atanybody,” he said. “I put her in a tiny little role.She just had to walk on stage and sit and pretendto talk to somebody and then come off. That’s allshe had to do. It sparked her interest in theatre. A year later she came back, she brought a friend, she

People are invited to come out and listen to theOakville Children’s Choir (OCC) when it holds itsopen rehearsal for the public at Joshua Creek HeritageArts Centre.
