SHELL IN PENNSYLVANIA
2018 FACTSHEET
SHELL’S PRESENCE IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA SPANS FROM AREAS IN THE OHIO VALLEY ACROSS THE NORTHERN TIER Unconventional oil and gas development and chemicals make up the core business efforts within the region. Shell is one of the largest leaseholders and producers over a four-county area in the Appalachia Basin. Shell’s presence in Pennsylvania includes approximately 500,000 acres in lease hold for unconventional drilling operations in the north central portions of Pennsylvania, where we drill and produce gas from the Marcellus and Utica formations. Shell is also building a major petrochemicals complex north of Pittsburgh.
MANUFACTURING AND CHEMICAL FACILITIES
New petrochemicals complex Will produce 3.5 billion pounds of polyethylene per year using low-cost ethane from shale gas producers in Marcellus and Utica basins:
Polyethylene is used in many products, including food packaging, containers, piping and other household goods
Located in Potter Township, Beaver County:
30 miles north-west of Pittsburgh
Close proximity to gas feedstock benefits complex and customers through shorter, more dependable supply chains
Approximately 70% of North American commercial/industrial polyethylene customers are within a 700-mile radius of our facility in Beaver County
Project could bring new growth and jobs to the region:
Up to 6,000 construction workers involved in building the new complex
Anticipated 600 permanent employees when completed
Vertical construction began in November 2017, and the plant will be operational in the early part of the next decade
Unconventional deep shale gas Approximately 500,000 acres lease hold over four counties
Field Office – Tioga County
