2015 Past President
Dear Member of the Project Management Community,
2015 was a year of several significant changes for the PMI Dallas Chapter, designed to set the chapter up for future success. For example, our bylaws no longer require that a volunteer hold a PMI cer;fica;on in order to sit on our Board of Directors. While I hold all our cer;fica;ons in high regard and feel they are invaluable to a career in project management, I also believe in the value of the knowledge required to get a PMI cer;fica;on. The more widely best prac;ces are implemented, the be]er the organiza;ons that hire project managers with PMI cer;fica;ons will perform. However, PMI’s own bylaws do not require a member of their Board to hold a cer;fica;on and this change aligns our chapter with PMI’s bylaws. By removing the cer;fica;on requirement we open Board membership to a wider pool of talent and this provides us with a be]er opportunity to increase project management knowledge and awareness.
In 2015 we con;nued to focus on improving opera;ons. We iden;fied a new venue for our monthly dinner mee;ngs. These are our biggest events each month and we want to maintain the high quality for all our a]endees. Early indica;ons are the new venue is a success. The transi;on was smooth and a]endance at dinner mee;ng is trending up.
We also established some new offerings. Most of our dinner speaker presenta;ons are now available for online viewing a`er the event. The objec;ve of this new offering is to help us reach a broader audience. Each year about 25% of our members a]end an event in person. Our hope is that by offering an op;on to par;cipate virtually more members will be able to recognize some of the value of their membership. This op;on might and even encourage more to a]end one of our events in person.
To address unplanned vacancies on the Board this year we took a different approach. When the VP Opera;ons role became open we redistributed several tasks to other departments. For the vacant VP Educa;on posi;on, we filled the role with an Associate VP who could learn the responsibili;es and see if it was a good fit before making the commitment to accept the role. In both cases we held a special elec;on at the same ;me as our regular elec;on to fill the slots for the remainder of the term. We also had a vacancy in the Past President role and chose to leave that open since I would fill the posi;on star;ng in 2016. I’m now very excited about the makeup of the 2016 Board and I know the incoming president, Susan Kennedy, has an excellent team to help her for the next two years.
As I look forward to my new role as Past President I’m honored to have had the opportunity to serve the project management community as the president of such an excellent organiza;on. Thank you for being part of that community and for your con;nued support.

2016 President’s Message: Looking Forward
Last year was certainly significant for the PMI Dallas Chapter. Congratula;ons to the volunteers who par;cipated and contributed in the programs and events, and to those behind the scenes who help make the chapter run so smoothly. A special thank you goes to the outgoing Board members who made such significant contribu;ons to the chapter over the last several years, and to Larry Johnson for his presiden;al leadership during the past two terms.
Our 2016 vision calls for renewed focus on member value and ini;a;ves to engage more people and businesses in the project management profession.
Every area of the chapter is coming together in 2016 to offer different or improved services. Our Educa;on team is looking into op;ons for new classes and updates to our most popular ones. Communica;ons has ideas for improving our website and newsle]ers. Opera;ons is reorganizing to be]er collaborate with other teams. Membership plans to launch ini;a;ves to grow our chapter. Finance con;nues to streamline and improve. All the areas that directly touch members such as Programs, Professional Development, Applied PM and Educa;on have ini;a;ves to engage more people and increase knowledge of the project management profession.
Dallas con;nues to be one of the top ten largest PMI chapters in the world. Thanks to you, our members and volunteers, we are also leading the way in project management engagement and outreach. Share the word about our chapter to your colleagues, family and friends by invi;ng them to any of our new events.

PMI Education Foundation
The Educa;on Founda;on Liaison team’s goal is to establish a pilot program that could be implemented during the course of a school term for elementary, junior high and high school students in the DISD area.
2015 Accomplishments:
• Completed 10 week engagement with Skyline High School.
• Developed and presented full life cycle Project Management lessons weekly.
• Guided students through real life project task iden;fica;on and schedule development.
• Helped students with scope iden;fica;on and management based on client need. Ini;al scope was to create and distribute toys to the children at Children's Medical Center of Dallas to help them feel be]er. Final scope was to create and donate Lovies to the babies in the NICU, while crea;ng arts and cra`s with the older children at the Children's Medical Center of Dallas.
• Guided students in design/produc;on of instruc;ons and packaging for the Lovies, clarifica;on of scope, communica;ons management, and procurement management of purchased materials as well as with an external vendor.
• Created and delivered May PMI Dallas Dinner Mee;ng presenta;on, highligh;ng the students and PMI Dallas PMIEF team engagement.
• Obtained a great deal of lessons learned from doing an engagement with an inner city public school.

Operations & Support
The Opera;ons and Support department is comprised of two standing teams and several individual contributor roles. Many of our func;ons are ongoing in nature, such as suppor;ng regularly occurring mee;ngs, but we also have adhoc tasks aimed at solving issues.
Key 2015 accomplishments include the following.
• Reloca;on from Crown Plaza to Brook Haven Country Club – Worked with all departments to iden;fy a new venue to house all of the PMI Dallas Chapter Events, including but not limited to monthly dinner mee;ngs, educa;on classes, etc. The change in venue was driven by a change in requirements of the vendor and the BOD elected to make a change of the venue to ensure members and guest were gaining the best value for the cost of each respec;ve event. To select the new loca;on a Request for Purchase (RFP) package was created and supplied to poten;al vendors. The selec;on process was rigorous to ensure the best loca;on was selected which offered values to the chapter members and guest, while remaining within close proximity to the previous venue, which is some-‐what centralized within our service region. The Programs Department was instrumental in coordina;ng with poten;al new loca;on(s).
• Webinar Team – this team was created to provide members and guest whom are out of town during the monthly dinner mee;ng the ability to purchase at a low cost the contents from the monthly mee;ng, including the ability to receive the PDUs related to the mee;ng contents. The team video records each presenter and important chapter informa;on and places the recordings on a webinar website, with the link for members and guest being housed on the PMI Dallas Homepage.
• Contact Us Response Team – this team provides ;mely and informa;ve responses to all email inquiries origina;ng from the chapter web site.
• Purchasing – the Opera;ons team sourced a variety of logo merchandise for use by the chapter for event a]endee and speaker awards. All sourcing was done in advance to avoid rush charges, quan;;es were coordinated between departments to assure volume discounts, and merchandise storage and turnover was managed to minimize shrinkage.
• Event bookings were coordinated with the selec;on of the new loca;on, which assured the selected dates for the venues. The final contracts were completed, allowing for the distribu;on of the 2016 magne;c chapter calendar at the January Dinner Mee;ng at the new loca;on, Brookhaven Country Club.

Communications
The Communica;ons team consists of six volunteers, each handling a specific need of the Chapter: newsle]er, website, social media, email management and general communica;ons.
Accomplishments for 2015
• Con;nued suppor;ng chapter communica;ons through the use of electronic newsle]ers which provided news about upcoming chapter events and various other events in the PM community.
• Evaluated an online service called Hootsuite and decided that it will enhance the Chapter’s u;liza;on of social media networks: LinkedIn, Twi]er and Facebook. Plans are to implement this service next year to raise awareness of events, news and encourage 2-‐way communica;ons with members and poten;al members.
• Decided to seek alterna;ve website providers for next year, with a focus on gathering metrics on visitor usage and increase flexibility in the way the informa;on can be updated more quickly and dynamically.
• Provided con;nued support to the departments of the chapter with their communica;ons needs on the website.

Marketing
The Marke;ng program is comprised of three commi]ees listed below:• Career Resources (CR) Commi]ee• Corporate Liaison and Marke;ng (CLM) Commi]ee• Registered Company Coordinator (RCC) Commi]ee
Key 2015 Marke;ng team accomplishments are listed below:
• Realized significant new growth in volunteer members in all three marke;ng commi]ees totaling nearly 60 people who supported our chapter marke;ng team commi]ee goals.
• Held four RCC team mee;ngs with good par;cipa;on sharing knowledge about PM best prac;ces and approaches. These events were well received with presenta;ons by RCCs or chapter members to support the advancement of the PM profession through networking with colleagues. The RCCs also represented our Chapter within their respec;ve organiza;ons advancing the PM profession within their companies.
• The Career Resources team provided one free Career Development Workshops that was conducted successfully with high member customer sa;sfac;on. A]endees earned PDUs and various topics were covered such as effec;ve mee;ng communica;ons/introduc;ons and u;liza;on of social media channels to op;mize search and professional profile informa;on.
• Many members signed up for the Blue Dot Register to receive no;ce of job vacancies. This Register is designed for the unemployed or under-‐employed or those seeking to keep up with the latest PM opportuni;es. Even in the down economy, the PMI Dallas Chapter receives many job vacancies that need to be filled quickly. Key job leads were also posted on the PMI Dallas Chapter internal web site for all members to view.
• The CLM team also created a new chapter flyer, new chapter brochure and is working on a corporate outreach presenta;on to share the benefits of PMI and our chapter. In addi;on, the team worked with the RCCs to Survey RCC members to determine member brand awareness value of key Chapter ac;vi;es or benefits of the Chapter. This survey was used to solicit ideas for chapter improvements.
• Commi]ee member volunteers a]ended dinner mee;ngs, recruited newvolunteers, and assisted with informa;on tables at Chapter mee;ngs.

Programs
The Programs team is comprised of 3 standing teams: Programs Development, Breakfast Mee;ng, and Toastmasters. Our func;ons are ongoing in nature, such as planning and organizing membership mee;ngs, but we also organize many one-‐off events.
Key 2015 accomplishments include the following:
• 2015 PMI Region 6 Leadership Conferenceo Completed planning for the evento Hosted the event in March 2015, resul;ng in the highest a]endance of
PMI Region 6 chapter leaders and volunteers (more than 200)
• Monthly Dinner Mee,ngso “Meet the Board” – Offered first ;me a]endees and new members to
sit with a member of the PMI Dallas Board of Directors at the mee;ng. Those accep;ng the offer are welcomed in to the dining room early to meet with their BOD assignee and given ;me to receive an individualized welcome to the chapter, including a gi` of logo items. This program con;nued to successfully introduce the Chapter and its many volunteer opportuni;es to new a]endees resul;ng in filling of mul;ple volunteer vacancies by first-‐;me a]endees and new members
o Planned and organized monthly membership dinner mee;ngs, including solici;ng keynote speaking opportuni;es, evaluate, select and schedule speakers, and onsite support during the event

o during lunch hour without much commu;ng. The program has been a huge success in reaching non-‐members as well as providing low-‐cost PDU opportuni;es to members. A]endance has been significantly increasing throughout the year and we are planning on star;ng a 3rd loca;on in 2016.
• Social Hour o Introduced in late 2015, the event is geared toward engaging those
members who are in the job market to engage with local recrui;ng companies or hiring managers to provide an opportunity for them to meet and greet in a low-‐pressure serng. These events are sponsored by local recrui;ng companies and our first social hour was a huge success with more than 60 members registering and par;cipa;ng.

Education
The mission of the Educa;on Program is to provide educa;onal events and opportuni;es for members to learn about the project management profession. This includes project management related training and resource tools like books, library and templates to further personal growth and development. This is one of the key values of the PMI Dallas Chapter.
The Educa;on Commi]ee consists of seven commi]ees that include; PM101 Basic Project Management, PM201 Communica;ons, PM202 Scope Management, PM203 Risk Management, PM205 Project Team Leadership, PMP Exam Review and the Library. The goal is to provide strong support for the development of Project Management Professionals through hands on interac;ve courses and to provide opportuni;es to share experiences and best prac;ces.
The Chapter Resource Library serves the membership of the PMI Dallas Chapter by developing and maintaining collec;ons of professional, educa;onal and reference materials to support the Project Management profession. In 2015, the library was open on each of the 12 monthly mee;ng dates. The library currently contains 210 books and 244 patrons who have u;lized these resources.
A total of 19 Educa;on courses were provided during the year, with a total of 207 a]endees as noted below. The overall course a]endance basically flat over 2015. 2016 objec;ves have been iden;fied to ensure the Educa;on course offering meets the needs of our members and the project management commi]ee.

The Professional Development group provides Professional Development Unit (PDU) opportuni;es for PMI Dallas Chapter members and Dallas project management professionals. These are designed to support the chapter’s strategic goals of increasing engagement with members and building awareness of the value of project management.
Achievements in 2015 included successfully holding the UTD Symposium in August, four Leadership Forum sessions, rolling out eBooks in the Book Review Team and mentoring several local professionals.
In 2016, Professional Development will focus on these primary business objec;ves:
1. Offer innova;ve low-‐cost or free PDU opportuni;es such as webinars, book reviews, facilitated Forum discussions and presenta;on workshops.
2. Offer project management workshops in partnership with professional vendors for low-‐cost, high quality PDU opportuni;es.
3. Partner with a local university to provide a high quality annual project management symposium that offers PDU and volunteer opportuni;es, as well as networking opportuni;es with a broader project management community.

Applied Project Management
Non Profit Team (NP)
The purpose of the NP team is to engage the nonprofit community and to bring awareness to the discipline of project management. The primary goal for the NP team is to engage in three nonprofit community outreaches. In 2015 the team did not partner with any non profit organiza;ons. The team reorganized how we engage in partnership with other non profits. The NP team develop a half day workshop for non profit organiza;ons with hopes of increasing engagement and awareness of project management in the Dallas area.
Component/Project of Year (C/PoY) The C/PoY team is a special team of project managers that focus on interna;onal projects submissions. The C/PoY project team has two interna;onal level submissions a year. The team submi]ed the Component of Year 2015 applica;on. The team requested projects to submit but was unable to find a project to meet the guideline of the PMI Project of Year applica;on.
Community of Prac,ce (CoP)
The CoP team serves primarily as a focus group for the Dallas Chapter. As of 2015 PMI dissolved the CoP teams. The PMI Dallas Chapter followed the alignment of PMI and dismantle the Dallas Chapter CoP team. As a result in dissolving the CoPs’, Project Management.com was born. Project Management.com is free and offers a vast knowledge base, tools/techniques, webinars and value for PMI members.

Finance
In 2015, the PMI Dallas Chapter Board of Directors refocused opera;ons to manage our cash posi;on. The Chapter reduced opera;ng losses in 2015 to $1,807 from a loss of $16,275 in 2014. The primary changes included reduc;ons in expenses related to conference registra;ons and related travel due to hos;ng the PMI Region 6 Leadership Conference, general promo;onal items and office related expenses. The Chapter’s cash posi;on remains strong at $276,024 up about $20,000 over 2014. The table below summarizes our financial posi;on. The PMI Dallas Chapter Financial Statements are presented at the end of this sec;on
The Chapter has three main revenue streams where volunteers are ac;vely engaged in developing offerings for our Membership. These offerings focus on enhancing project management knowledge for both technical and so` skills necessary to be a successful professional involved in the project management profession. Revenue profiles may change year to year depending on the offerings available or changes in programs that align to the Chapter’s strategic plan. The Net Revenues graphic iden;fies the revenues associated with the major revenue streams for both 2015 and 2014. In 2015, the Chapter hosted the PMI Region 6 Leadership Conference and is reflected in Programs for 2015. This event is hosted by the PMI Dallas Chapter on an infrequent basis. In 2016 the conference is hosted by the New Orleans Chapter.
