MONITORING TECHNOLOGY IS A VITAL PART OF THE

SURVIVAL STORY

In Mexico, tourists in the resort city of Cancun and its adjacent islands were told on October 19th to go home, or head inland with

local residents.

HAZARDS OF A HURRICANE (AKA POTENTIAL DISASTER AGENTS)

• WIND FIELD (COUNTER CLOCKWISE DIRECTION; CAT 1 (55 mph) TO CAT 5 (155 mph or greater)

LOSS ESTIMATION TECHNOLOGY IS A VITAL PART

OF BEING PREPARED

HURRICANE WILMA: EARLY LOSS ESTIMATE

• Risk Management Solutions estimated that insurance companies would have claims in the range of $6 billion to $10 billion for damage in Florida.

HURRICANE WILMA: LOSS ESTIMATE

• RMS’ estimate was based on onshore damage resulting from wind, a coastal storm surge, business interruption, and increased costs for materials and services needed for repairs.

FLORIDA HAD RESOURCES READY TO GO BEFORE WILMA’S LANDFALL

In Florida, a mandatory evacuation of residents was

ordered for the Florida Keys.

HURRICANE WILMA: OCT 21 EVACUATION; SARASOTA FL

HURRICANE WILMA: OCT 21 PREPARATION; VENICE, FLORIDA

HURRICANE WILMA: OCT 21 PORT CHARLOTTE, FL; PREPARATION

HURRICANE WILMA: FLORIDA

• Winds with gust of over 160 km/hr (100 mi/hr) buffeted heavily populated Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties on the Atlantic coast.

HURRICANE WILMA: KEY WEST, FL

The Lower Florida Keys experienced an unusual flood: it occurred twice, increasing the economic

impact.

HURRICANE WILMA: FLOODING IN FLORIDA KEYS

First, as the storm crossed the Gulf towards the State of Florida it pushed water

across the keys from south to north.

Second, after the storm made landfall, it pushed the same water back to the sea.
