Wave Definitions…

S Wave-Seismic body wave that shakes the ground back and forth perpendicular to the direction the wave is (side to side) P Wave-A seismic body wave that shakes the ground back and forth in the same direction and the opposite direction as the direction the wave is moving

L Wave-surface wave having a horizontal motion that is perpendicular to the direction the wave is traveling

Epicenter and focus definitions…

Epicenter-the point on the earth’s surface vertically above the hypocenter, the point in the crust where a seismic rupture begins

Focus-the point within the earth where an earthquake rupture starts

Definitions of Scales…

Mercalli Scale- is a number describing the severity of an earthquake in terms of its effects on the earth’s surface and on humans and their structures

Richter Scale- A method device that compares the size of earthquakes

the trench in Chile. It was a strike-split fault. It has been the source of devastating earthquakes for centuries.

This terrible earthquake caused 20,000 people to die! It compares to other earthquakes because it caused lots of deaths. The magnitude is also the same as other earthquakes. Anther way that it is like other earthquakes is because it was caused by the trench in Chile and other earthquakes have been caused by the same trench.
