15-16 Bible Lit MP2

Day 1 Bellringer• Which one or more of these is really in the

Bible?

• A quarrelsome wife is as annoying as contant dripping on a rainy day.

• When praises go up, blessings come down• God will never give you more than you can

bear• A dog returns to its vomit as a fool repeats his

folly

Writings of David (ish)• There are two key books in the middle of “the

Book” written by David and his son, Solomon.

• Psalms – these are mostly written by D, they have lots of wisdom in how we are supposed to talk to and interact with God.

• Proverbs – these are written by Solomon, and they are the “wisdom sayings” in the Bible.

Themes in the Psalms• God as Creator, Redeemer, Judge, Refuge• God’s law, wisdom, sovereignty, mercy• Passion (crucifixtion), the church, incarnation• Worship, Thanksgiving, Prayer, Trust

• For each of these, find one example in the Psalms – use the force (or your phone)

Psalms you should know• Psalm 23: The Lord is my Shepherd…even

though I walk through the valley of death• Psalm 40: I waited patiently for the Lord• Psalm 100: Shout for joy to the Lord• Psalm 139: He knows the hair on our head

• Psalm 119: the BIG ONE…hiding God’s Word in our heart

Language of Proverbs• Remember the three types of writing? Here’s

the poetry one that looks like poetry

• Read a few…• Find 5 proverbs (individual verses) that you

think might apply to YOU…NOW…these should be ones that you find applicable to your current stage in life.

Writing/Sharing• As a closing activity, you are going to write a

five line psalm, as well as five lines of proverbs…you will share both at the start of next class.

• The grade will be based on them having a theme and making sense, and being original.

Day 2 Bellringer• What was the cycle we learned that repeats

throughout the Old Testament?

• BE READY TO QUICKLY SHARE YOUR PSALM AND PROVERBS

People of Purpose

• Though there are these terrible instances of God’s people not doing the right thing, there are some key examples of people doing exactly what God commands of us/them.

• Today we look at Job, Esther, and Hosea

Faith in the Old Testament

• You, in your group, are going to spend 25-30 minutes learning the story of your person. You need to focus on what their life was like before the “trial,” describe the hard time itself, and describe how they were faithful in spite of their circumstance

• You also need one GOOD visual representation of the story

Job

Esther

Hosea

Quiz1 Who took Job’s family and possessions? 2 What physical affliction affected Job?3 What happens at the end of Job’s story?4 What type of woman was Hosea told to marry?5 Who told Hosea to marry a woman like that?6 Why?7 What was the name of Hosea’s wife?8 Who was Esther’s cousin that told helped her?9 What king (name or country) did Esther marry?10 Who was the advisor wanted to kill the Jews?

Day 3 Bellringer

• What do prophets do?

Youtube clips of prophets

• End of the world

• Televangelists

• Others

Prophets of the Old Testament World

• It was common for people to use prophets for real information.

• There were about a dozen prophets in the OT, we will study many next class, but today we will focus on Isaiah

Isaiah• Spend ten minutes looking for and recording

information about who Isaiah was. Focus on when/where he lived, who he was, etc.

• We will discuss and then talk about his prophecies.

His Prophecies• Focused on the people of Israel, and also on the Savior

(not necessarily Jesus, but Christians believe this is who he is referring to)

• About World– Babylon overthrown– Babylon’s gates open to Cyrus– Salvation reaches the whole earth

• About Savior– Virgin Birth– Blood atonement– Preceded by a messenger– Spat upon and beaten/rejected– Buried in a rich man’s tomb

Assn – find 10

Day 4 Bellringer• What were the two purposes of the prophets

in the Old Testament?

The collective OT Prophets• There were 12 “minor” prophets, as well as 4 “major”

prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekial) in the Old Testament. They lived/prophesied over the course of about 500 years.

• You are going to construct a timeline that includes all 16 prophets, what year/years they lived, what the other major world empires were at the time, and including these major events :– Fall of Samaria 740 bc, Destruction of Jerusalem 607 bc, Fall of

Babylon 539 bc, Return of Exiles 537 bc, Temple rebuilt 515 bc, and the Walls rebuilt 455 bc

• 850-633 – Assyrians• 605-539 – Babylonian (especially Nebuchadnezzar,

who makes Daniel an advisor)• 559-335 – Persian Empire, includes Cyrus, who

allowed Jews to return, and Darius, both of whom continued to use Daniel

Who is Daniel?• Is chosen as a court official by

Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian• Won’t go against God’s desires (won’t eat the

food/drink given by the king)• Began interpreting dreams for the king• Made other advisors mad b/c of his skill• Remained faithful (lion’s den) in spite of

people trying to tempt/test him• Stayed with new Empire

Anaylze this.

• Dream thoughts – dream of a fat cow, but then a skinny cow comes up to the fat cow. The skinny cow eats the fat cow, but it does not get any bigger. It eventually dies.

Daniel’s Dream Theory• You are going to create a t-chart with 6 of the

dreams Daniel has/interprets, and what they meant.– Statue ---what it meant– Dream ---you will be cut down and made

low– Dream ---what it meant– Dream ---what it meant– Dream ---what it meant– Dream ---what it meant

Day 5 Bellringer

• How did the OT prophets describe Jesus?

Details about the prophets• You are going to spend 20 minutes gathering

info on a few prophets. You need to include where they were centered, when they lived/wrote, what their main points were.

• You and your partner will gather for a few, make sure you get them all.

• You need to write one paragraph about each of your people. This should include when they lived (one sent), where they lived/prophesied (one sent), and what their prophesies included (4-5 sent).

1-Hosea, Nahum, Malachi2-Joel, Micah, Habakkuk3-Haggai, Jonah, Hosea4-Zecheriah, Zephaniah, Obadiah5-Amos, Malachi, Jonah6-

You’ll notice that many of the prophets are repeated – that’s on purpose.

test1-What was the Day 3 Bellringer?2-Who wrote most of the Psalms?3-What is one of the themes of the Psalms?4-Name one of the kings Daniel served.5-What was Daniel’s punishment for praying?6-What major prophet did we focus on last week?7-Write two sentences about either Hosea or Joel.8-Write two sent about either Zechariah or Haggai9-Write two sent about Jonah or Micah10-Write two sent about Malachi or Obadiah.

Day 6 Bellringer

• Have you ever given someone the “silent treatment” or has someone given it to you?– Describe why you gave them the silent treatment

or what you felt when they gave it to you, write 3-4 sentences

God’s “Silence”

• How did God speak to His people in the Bible – list 4 ways

• Who did God use to talk to His people in the latter half of the Old Testament?

• What were their three purposes?• Who was the last one?

v

What happens next, after God’s silence

• You are going to make a Venn Diagram comparing the way Malachi and Matthew/John are written. You will work with a partner, the point is to see similarities and differences in how Malachi’s writing ends the OT and the disciples’ writings begin the NT.

• “your eyes -prophet’s voice -word/lightshall see” -talk of a -blessings-questions messenger -prophet hasthe people -judgement more info-curses come -reception of -speaks against

Messiah leaders

On your own

• In a way that encapsulates the Biblical accounts, you are going to do a two part picture/cartoon. Part one is the end of the OT, and part two is the start of the NT.

• You need to include:– Time-taking pictures (not necessarily “good,” but

needs to be more than a few stick figures).– Clear message, clear tone– Needs to be either informative or funny (or both)

Day 7 Bellringer

• Draw your family tree with 3 generations (you and your siblings, you parents, your grandparents). If you don’t know names/exact stuff, make it as accurate as you can. You will be getting a grade, and you will have ten minutes for this.

The “Messiah” Family Tree

• The Old Testament is going to hint that the Messiah (unnamed at that point) is going to be linked to several people (Abraham, Jacob, David).

OT Family Tree spots• Find six spots in the Old Testament linking

someone to Jesus based on genealogy.– Include at least two that talk about Jesus/Messiah in

the future tense– Include at least two where someone is told they will

be in Jesus’ line

Draw a Family Tree for Jesus

• Using online resources, draw a family tree showing the lineage between David and Jesus, going from David to Mary, AND from David to Joseph.

Day 8 Bellringer• In addition to genealogy, what main recurring

events do the four Gospels talk about?

• From the video, what is the most important thing about Jesus

List of Miracles

• Write a list of ten miracles Jesus performed in the Bible. Include a 4-5 word description (Jesus walked on water), and the verse(s)

One Miracle, three stories• There are quite a few of the miracles that are

described in three of the Gospels (there are a few in all 4, but we will stick with this).

• You are going to make a chart for ONE miracle story, and write out the details in each account. Then, you will draw lines connecting the details that are the same/different

Choices:• Healing of Peter’s mother in law• Cleansing of a leper• Healing of a paralytic• Cure of man with withered hand• Calming of storm/sea• Cure of woman with hemmorage• Feeding 5000• Walking on water• Casting out demon• Healing blind at Jericho• Resurrection

Day 9 Bellringer

• Who wanted Jesus killed, and who had the authority to kill Him?

Video clip about Jesus in his last week

Notes about Jesus’ last week

Timeline

• You are going to make a timeline of Jesus’ last week. You need to have ten events – in ORDER of how they happened…

Day 10 Bellringer

• What did Jesus do as the people turned against Him?

Notes about the people’s treatment of Jesus in His final week

• As we watch the following video clips, focus notes on other people’s actions…– What did the disciples do?– What did the officials do?– How did people treat him?

Timeline pt 2

• On the same page as last class’ assn, you are going to make a timeline of everyone else’s actions…this one needs 15 events.

Day 11 Bellringer

• What was important about Jesus, regardless of whether you believe he was the Son of God?

The Resurrection

• Video clip

• notes

After Jesus’ Lifetime

• What matters most (as we have said) is that many believed, and acted as such.

• The disciples told others, and soon there were several hundred (and eventually thousands) believers in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Church based on Acts

• You are going to create the early church based on the information in the book of Acts.

Day 12 Bellringer

• What are 4 reasons you would write a Letter (not just a quick text) to a friend?

History of Paul’s writing
