JAMMU, Dec 21: The 4-days 13th J&K State WushuChampionship commenced atIndoor Hall, MA Stadium, heretoday.

Over 800 participants from17 Districts are participating inthe Championship. The DistrictAssociations participating in thechampionships include Srinagar,Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara,Ganderbal, Anantnag, Shopian,Bandipora, Kargil,Leh, Rajouri,Poonch, Samba, Kathua,Udhampur, Reasi and Jammu.

The Championship wasdeclared open by veteran sportsadministrator, Aushtosh Sharma,General Secretary J&K OlympicAssociation, while the functionwas presided over by RanjeetKalra, Vice Chairman, SportsCouncil Jammu.

Vijay Saraf, President WushuAssociation of J&K, Jt.Secretary J&K State SportsCouncil, Jammu, Shiv KumarSharma and Chief SportsOfficer, Abdul Qayoom werepresent on the occasion.

The dignitaries appreciatedthe efforts of the WushuAssociation for promoting theWushu in all regions of the State.

They congratulated themedalists of the Wushu at theInternational and National leveland wished them best of luck forthe forthcoming WorldChampionship and AsianGames.

Speaking on the occasionRanjeet Kalra lauded the effortsof Wushu association underIndia coach, Kuldeep Handoo

for promoting the game. He alsohighlighted the initiatives beingtaken by the Council for promo-tion of sports especially the per-sonal initiative by ChiefMinister, who is also thePresident of State SportsCouncil.

The opening fight of the subjunior category in 30 kg was ofteen sensation Tajamul Islamwho defeated Shaftan hamidfrom Baramulla..

Meanwhile, in the final match,Vijay Club defeated Param FC by5-4 goals vie tie-breaker andclinched the title trophy of theChampionship with a cash prize ofRs.20,0000, The runners-teamreceived a cash prize of Rs. 10,000and a trophy, while Kanwal SportsAnantnag Football Club receivedbest disciplined team trophy.

‘Shrine Board’s Sports Complex to bedeveloped as hub of sport activities’

KATRA, Dec 21: The 1stmeeting of the Governing Councilof the Shrine Board's SportsComplex, Katra was held at theSpiritual Growth Centre herewhich took a number of importantdecisions for developing theSports Complex as a hub of sportsand games as well as specialisedcoaching facilities.

Dr. Ashok Bhan, Member ofShri Mata Vaishno Devi ShrineBoard and Chairman of theGoverning Council of the SportsComplex, chaired the meeting,whereas Ajeet Kumar Sahu, CEOand Dr. Piyush Singla, AdditionalCEO also attended the meeting.

Prominent sportspersons i.e.Sanjeeva Singh, formerInternational Archer(Arjuna/Dronacharya Awardee);Krupali Singh, NationalGymnastics Coach (ArjunaAwardee); Kuldeep Handoo, emi-nent Wushu player andInternational Coach; and Mr.Ashok Kumar, Director Sports ofthe Shrine Board, who all aremembers of the GoverningCouncil, participated in the delib-erations. Ranjit Kalra, Member,J&K State Sports Council attendedthe meeting as a Special Invitee.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr.Bhan dwelt on the aims and objec-tives of setting up of the SportsComplex Katra and the mandateof the Governing Council. Headded that keeping in view thestate-of-the-art facilities madeavailable at the Sports Complex,strenuous efforts are required to bemade for optimum utilisation ofthis facility to develop it as a hubof sports in the area.

Dr. Piyush Singla, AdditionalCEO made a detailed presentationon the to-date status of SportsComplex and the achievements sofar. After its inauguration by theHon'ble Prime Minister in Aprilthis year, 21 sports activities havebeen organised involving 2012

participants. These events includea 3-day State level Rifle and Pistolshooting Championship. The com-plex has 358 annual members whotake part in various sports activi-ties on daily basis.

The meeting had a detaileddiscussion on utilisation and main-tenance of various existing facili-ties and also discussed the modali-ties for creating Centre ofExcellence in identified three dis-ciplines of Archery, Shooting andAthletics (long distance run andthrows). For this purpose, talenthunt will be organised by holdingtrials in the educational institutionsof the area with a view to catchthem young and thereafter theselected boys and girls will beimparted specialised coachingwith the help of experiencedcoaches to groom them for partici-pation in various national andinternational competitions.

In addition, the meeting askedthe Director Sports to organisewinter and summer sports campsof 3 weeks duration each both forthe school children and seniorsand organising competitions attheir culmination. The meetingalso discussed the modalities fororganising such coaching campsand the requirement of the equip-ments.

The Governing Council meet-ing reviewed the implementationof the calendar of activities of theSports Complex from July toDecember 2016 and approved thecalendar of activities prepared forthe next six months. Dr. Bhanemphasised the need for formu-lating calendar of activities for theentire year of 2017 which will bediscussed and finalised at the nextmeeting of the GoverningCouncil.

Those who were present inthe meeting included HemkantPrasher, Chief Accounts Officerand Dr. Arvind Karwani, Dy.CEO of the Shrine Board.

martial arts champi-onship in Bhutan.

The championshipwas held at indoor stadi-um at Thimpu, the capi-tal of Bhutan, December16, 2016. Besides from

Zorawar Singh Jamwal,Chairman of Team Jammu wasthe chief guest on the occasion,while Fr. Jose Vadake, VicePresident of Jammu SrinagarDioceses along with Fathers andSisters of different schools werepresent on the occasion.

The celebration started withthe welcome address by Fr.Thomas Niravathu, Principal ofthe School.

In his address he stressed onthe need of having sports activi-ties in the life of the students.

The children in beautiful Pinkand black attire presented aero-bics. One leg race and Frog Racewere the main highlights of theshow. Bursting of balloons wasanother interesting race.

Winners of different gameswere honoured by the chief guest,who is also an alumnus of the StPeter's High School. He alsoaddressed the gathering and feltextremely glad to be a part of thecelebration.

Recalling his good old days inthis institution, he shared hisexperience with the students.

Mr Jamwal also threw lighton the ill effects of drug abusewhich is increasing day-by-day inthe society.

JAMMU, Dec 21:Himachal Pradesh were incomfortable position at 154/2against Jammu and Kashmir'smodest total of 132 runs on theopening day of the 3-daymatch of Vijay MerchantUnder-16 Cricket Tournamentat Atal Bihari Vajpayee CricketStadium, Amtar in HimachalPradesh, today.

Batting first, J&K werebundled out for a modest totalof 132 runs in 49.5 overs.Muhmmad Shahdad was thetop scorer with 42 runs, whileRaghav Sharma contributed 21runs to the total. Rather ZaminBin Zahoor, Mujtaba Yousufand Kartik Sharma alsochipped in with 17, 14 and 11runs respectively. None of theother batsmen could cross thedouble figure mark.

JAMMU, Dec 21: LupinCricket Club defeated GreaterKashmir Cricket Club by 15 runsin a friendly T-20 cricket matchplayed at Smailpur stadium here.

SRINAGAR, Dec 21: Policetoday said the South KashmirSports Festival organized by itconcluded today and the finalsof all events were played atGovernment Degree CollegeAnantnag.

A police spokesman said, inCricket, the final match of theevent was played betweenShopian and Anantnag in whichAnantnag emerged as winners.In volley ball, the final matchwas played between Anantnagand Pulwama which was wonby the Anantnag, he said.

The spokesman said thefinal match in carrom wasplayed between Awantipora andAnantnag in which the formeremerged as winner. "The chessfinal was played betweenKulgam and Shopian which waswon by the Kulgam. In Khofinal which was played betweenKulgam and Shopian, Kulgamemerged as winners," he said.

The police spokesman added

that the SQAY Martial Art wasintroduced in the festival for thefirst time in which the playersfrom Shopian district displayedspectacular skill and won all thebouts in different categories.

In senior boys' category,Hamid Rashid, Danish Aijaz,Jibran Hilal all from Shopianwon the Gold in lower, middleand upper weight categoriesrespectively. In junior boys' cat-egory, Mahran Nasir, ShahidHamid and Raja Younis Tak allfrom Shopian won the gold inlower, middle and upper weightcategories respectively.

In sub-junior boys' category,the gold was won by MuzamilHamid, Naveed Tariq, ImranInayat in lower, middle andupper weight categories respec-tively. JAMMU, Dec 21: Ministerfor Industries and CommerceChander Parkash Ganga hasstressed the need for promotingScouts and Guides movement ineducational institutions to culti-vate values like commitment,conviction, character, courtesyand cheerfulness among theyouth.

The Minister was speaking ata function organized by BharatScouts and Guides here today inwhich about 200 Scouts/Guides,Scouters/Guiders and heads ofvarious institutions participated.

On the occasion, the Ministerwished the young boys and girlsgoing to represent J&K inNational Jamboree being held atKarnataka this month. Over30,000 students from across thecountry and about 2,000 fromneighboring countries are expect-ed to take part in the nationalevent.

Addressing the gathering, theMinister said that the decision ofthe Government of India ondemonetization has receivedoverwhelming response from thepeople as they are convincedabout the objective behind thisinitiative. He further said that itwill ensure in eliminating corrup-tion, black-money and fake cur-rency from the country.

Pathankot and Sandhu CricketClub Ludhiana registered con-vincing victories over theirrivals in the ongoing 7th PoliceMartyrs Memorial North ZoneInter Club T20 CricketChampionship at SportsStadium, here today.

In the 9th match of theChampionship, Jammu XI ClubJammu won the toss and chooseto bat first. Batting first, JammuXI Club scored a paltry total of94 runs in 18.4 overs. AdityaPartap Singh scored 29 runs off29 balls. Kishani and Sukha ofVicky XI Pathankot were thesuccessful bowlers who took 4and 03 wickets respectively.

Vicky XI Pathankot chasedthe target easily by losing 7wickets in 16.2 overs . Rohanwas the top scorer with 25 runsoff 30 balls including 4 bound-aries. Kishani was declared asman of the match and was pre-

sented a cash prize of Rs. 2100and a trophy by Baba Sidhgoria.

In another match, StadiumJunior XI Kathua won the tossand decided to bat first and set atarget of 120 runs by Losing 7wickets in 20 Overs. Anuj andSandeep of Stadium Junior XIKathua were scored 42 and 29runs respectively.

Rubaljit Singh and Palla ofSandhu cricket Club Ludhianawere the main successfulbowlers who took 4 wicketseach . Sandhu Cricket ClubLudhiana chased the target easi-ly by losing 4 wickets in 15.2overs. Ankit and Palla scored 46and 43 runs respectively.Pushkar and Abhi of StadiumJunior XI Kathua were took 2and 01 wicket resepctively.
