Over 800 participants from 17 Districts are participating in the Championship. The District Associations participating in the championships include Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Shopian, Bandipora, Kargil,Leh, Rajouri, Poonch, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur, Reasi and Jammu. The Championship was declared open by veteran sports administrator, Aushtosh Sharma, General Secretary J&K Olympic Association, while the function was presided over by Ranjeet Kalra, Vice Chairman, Sports Council Jammu. Vijay Saraf, President Wushu Association of J&K, Jt. Secretary J&K State Sports Council, Jammu, Shiv Kumar Sharma and Chief Sports Officer, Abdul Qayoom were present on the occasion. The dignitaries appreciated the efforts of the Wushu Association for promoting the Wushu in all regions of the State. They congratulated the medalists of the Wushu at the International and National level and wished them best of luck for the forthcoming World Championship and Asian Games. Speaking on the occasion Ranjeet Kalra lauded the efforts of Wushu association under India coach, Kuldeep Handoo for promoting the game. He also highlighted the initiatives being taken by the Council for promo- tion of sports especially the per- sonal initiative by Chief Minister, who is also the President of State Sports Council. The opening fight of the sub junior category in 30 kg was of teen sensation Tajamul Islam who defeated Shaftan hamid from Baramulla.. The president of the Wushu Association appealed J&K State Sports Council to provide Basic facilities to this medal winning sports discipline. The Additional Director General of Police Security Headquarters J&K, Dilbag Singh was the chief guest on the valedic- tory function, while Jung Bahadur, Member SHRC; SSP Jammu, Dr Sunil Kumar; Ranjeet Kalra, Vice Chairman Jammu Sports Council; Bushan Dogra, Vice Chairman SC Advisory Board and Ranjeet Singh, Secretary JMC were the guests of honour, while SP City Jammu Dr. Vinod Kumar, CPO Vikrant Sharma, Surinder Bunty, Vice President Jammu Football Association, Mohan Lal, Secretary JKFA ,SM Gill, Ex.MLC, Vikas Bhatti, Vikas Sharma, Sr. Manager Federal Bank, Palki Anand, Manager South Indian Bank and Manager Canara Bank were also presnt on the occasion. Meanwhile, in the final match, Vijay Club defeated Param FC by 5-4 goals vie tie-breaker and clinched the title trophy of the Championship with a cash prize of Rs.20,0000, The runners-team received a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 and a trophy, while Kanwal Sports Anantnag Football Club received best disciplined team trophy. The proceedings of the vale- dictory function were conducted by Rajesh Dhar and Victor Sotra. ‘Shrine Board’s Sports Complex to be developed as hub of sport activities’ Excelsior Sports Correspondent KATRA, Dec 21: The 1st meeting of the Governing Council of the Shrine Board's Sports Complex, Katra was held at the Spiritual Growth Centre here which took a number of important decisions for developing the Sports Complex as a hub of sports and games as well as specialised coaching facilities. Dr. Ashok Bhan, Member of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Sports Complex, chaired the meeting, whereas Ajeet Kumar Sahu, CEO and Dr. Piyush Singla, Additional CEO also attended the meeting. Prominent sportspersons i.e. Sanjeeva Singh, former International Archer (Arjuna/Dronacharya Awardee); Krupali Singh, National Gymnastics Coach (Arjuna Awardee); Kuldeep Handoo, emi- nent Wushu player and International Coach; and Mr. Ashok Kumar, Director Sports of the Shrine Board, who all are members of the Governing Council, participated in the delib- erations. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bhan dwelt on the aims and objec- tives of setting up of the Sports Complex Katra and the mandate of the Governing Council. He added that keeping in view the state-of-the-art facilities made available at the Sports Complex, strenuous efforts are required to be made for optimum utilisation of this facility to develop it as a hub of sports in the area. Dr. Piyush Singla, Additional CEO made a detailed presentation on the to-date status of Sports Complex and the achievements so far. After its inauguration by the Hon'ble Prime Minister in April this year, 21 sports activities have been organised involving 2012 participants. These events include a 3-day State level Rifle and Pistol shooting Championship. The com- plex has 358 annual members who take part in various sports activi- ties on daily basis. The meeting had a detailed discussion on utilisation and main- tenance of various existing facili- ties and also discussed the modali- ties for creating Centre of Excellence in identified three dis- ciplines of Archery, Shooting and Athletics (long distance run and throws). For this purpose, talent hunt will be organised by holding trials in the educational institutions of the area with a view to catch them young and thereafter the selected boys and girls will be imparted specialised coaching with the help of experienced coaches to groom them for partici- pation in various national and international competitions. In addition, the meeting asked the Director Sports to organise winter and summer sports camps of 3 weeks duration each both for the school children and seniors and organising competitions at their culmination. The meeting also discussed the modalities for organising such coaching camps and the requirement of the equip- ments. The Governing Council meet- ing reviewed the implementation of the calendar of activities of the Sports Complex from July to December 2016 and approved the calendar of activities prepared for the next six months. Dr. Bhan emphasised the need for formu- lating calendar of activities for the entire year of 2017 which will be discussed and finalised at the next meeting of the Governing Council. Those who were present in the meeting included Hemkant Prasher, Chief Accounts Officer and Dr. Arvind Karwani, Dy. CEO of the Shrine Board. Kashmiri girls win gold, bronze Excelsior Sports Correspondent SRINAGAR Dec 21: Mehroosh Manzoor Paul, a resi- dent of Narkara in Central Kashmir's Budgam district, won the gold in South Asian Tong-Il Moo-do Championship 2016, held at Indoor Stadium in Bhutanese capital of Thimphu. The girl has brought laurels to the state by winning gold in a martial arts champi- onship in Bhutan. Aqsa Fareed Khan, class 5th student of Presentation Convent Higher Secondary School Srinagar, has bagged bronze in Tong IL Moo Do in Junior Medium Weight Category. The championship was held at indoor stadi- um at Thimpu, the capi- tal of Bhutan, December 16, 2016. Besides from India, the players from Srilanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Maldives participated in this international event. St Peter’s HS celebrates Annual Sports Day with zeal, zest Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 21: St. Peter's High School's Junior wing cele- brated Sports Day in the school premises for the first time, with great Zeal and enthusiasm. Zorawar Singh Jamwal, Chairman of Team Jammu was the chief guest on the occasion, while Fr. Jose Vadake, Vice President of Jammu Srinagar Dioceses along with Fathers and Sisters of different schools were present on the occasion. The celebration started with the welcome address by Fr. Thomas Niravathu, Principal of the School. In his address he stressed on the need of having sports activi- ties in the life of the students. Students of Junior wing pre- sented a soulful welcome dance. Tiny-tots presented the March Past with the values Peace, Unity, Brotherhood, Sacrifice and Tolerance. The chief guest took the salute of the March-Past. Sports Flame was lit by Fr. Niravathu, Mr Zorwar Singh and carried by the students who have brought laurels to the institution which was followed by the decla- ration of the meet open. The dance depicting impor- tance of sports and games present- ed by children added colour to the show. Importance of Yoga was depicted by toddlers in a beautiful manner. The children in beautiful Pink and black attire presented aero- bics. One leg race and Frog Race were the main highlights of the show. Bursting of balloons was another interesting race. Winners of different games were honoured by the chief guest, who is also an alumnus of the St Peter's High School. He also addressed the gathering and felt extremely glad to be a part of the celebration. Recalling his good old days in this institution, he shared his experience with the students. Mr Jamwal also threw light on the ill effects of drug abuse which is increasing day-by-day in the society. The programme ended with a colourful Bhangra presented by enthusiastic toddlers. V ijay Merchant U-16 Cricket T ournament HP 154/2 against J&K’s 132 Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 21: Himachal Pradesh were in comfortable position at 154/2 against Jammu and Kashmir's modest total of 132 runs on the opening day of the 3-day match of Vijay Merchant Under-16 Cricket Tournament at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium, Amtar in Himachal Pradesh, today. Batting first, J&K were bundled out for a modest total of 132 runs in 49.5 overs. Muhmmad Shahdad was the top scorer with 42 runs, while Raghav Sharma contributed 21 runs to the total. Rather Zamin Bin Zahoor, Mujtaba Yousuf and Kartik Sharma also chipped in with 17, 14 and 11 runs respectively. None of the other batsmen could cross the double figure mark. Earlier, J&K were 21/3 with both openers Abdul Samad (8) and Kanhaiya Wadhawan (6) back into the pavilion. For Himachal Pradesh, Lakshay H Verma took 4 wickets, while Vikrant Bakshi and Rishab S Charak bagged 3 wickets each. In reply, Himachal Pradesh were strongly placed at 154/2 when the stumps were drawn today. Sidharth A Mehta and Aryarat R Sharma were unbeaten on 74 and 56 runs respectively. Openers Kushal L Pal and Raghav K Angra were back to the pavilion early in the innings. Kushal was caught by Kanhaiya Wadhawan and bowled by Praful Dhar for 8 runs off 33 balls, while Raghav was caught by Praful Dhar and bowled by Rather Zamin Bin Zahoor for 6 runs off 15 balls. District Udhampur Chess Championship from Dec 25 Excelsior Sports Correspondent UDHAMPUR, Dec 21: More than 100 players from different parts including school and col- leges were expected to participate in District Udhampur Chess Championship 2016. This was disclosed by the officer bearers of District Udhampur Chess Association while speaking in a press conference, he said battles across the table at the District Udhampur Chess Championship will start from December 25 and last date for entry is December 24. The Championship will be held in male & female in all cat- egories including Open Title Computer Point Open category 2016. LCC after winning the toss opted to bat first and posted a testing 160 runs target on the scoreboard at the loss of 5 wick- ets in 20 overs. Pravesh scored highest 64 runs in 36 balls, while Minanshu scored 34 in 44 balls. For GKCC Akash, Yash, and Rahul shared a wicket each. While chasing the target GKCC had a disparaging start with their top order batsmen dis- played some irresponsible shots selection as GKCC were at 23 for 2 after five overs. Akash 44 runs off 32 runs played some big hit as GKCC somehow regained the asking rate in control; he was ably followed by Rahul 38 runs off 18 balls. South Kashmir Sports Festival concludes Excelsior Sports Correspondent SRINAGAR, Dec 21: Police today said the South Kashmir Sports Festival organized by it concluded today and the finals of all events were played at Government Degree College Anantnag. A police spokesman said, in Cricket, the final match of the event was played between Shopian and Anantnag in which Anantnag emerged as winners. In volley ball, the final match was played between Anantnag and Pulwama which was won by the Anantnag, he said. The spokesman said the final match in carrom was played between Awantipora and Anantnag in which the former emerged as winner. "The chess final was played between Kulgam and Shopian which was won by the Kulgam. In Kho final which was played between Kulgam and Shopian, Kulgam emerged as winners," he said. The police spokesman added that the SQAY Martial Art was introduced in the festival for the first time in which the players from Shopian district displayed spectacular skill and won all the bouts in different categories. In senior boys' category, Hamid Rashid, Danish Aijaz, Jibran Hilal all from Shopian won the Gold in lower, middle and upper weight categories respectively. In junior boys' cat- egory, Mahran Nasir, Shahid Hamid and Raja Younis Tak all from Shopian won the gold in lower, middle and upper weight categories respectively. Ganga for promoting Scouts & Guides movement in J&K Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 21: Minister for Industries and Commerce Chander Parkash Ganga has stressed the need for promoting Scouts and Guides movement in educational institutions to culti- vate values like commitment, conviction, character, courtesy and cheerfulness among the youth. The Minister was speaking at a function organized by Bharat Scouts and Guides here today in which about 200 Scouts/Guides, Scouters/Guiders and heads of various institutions participated. On the occasion, the Minister wished the young boys and girls going to represent J&K in National Jamboree being held at Karnataka this month. Over 30,000 students from across the country and about 2,000 from neighboring countries are expect- ed to take part in the national event. "Activities of Scouts and Guide need encouragement as they promote character building, spirit of camaraderie and brother- hood, which is vital is overall character building of an individ- ual," the Minister emphasized. In the 9th match of the Championship, Jammu XI Club Jammu won the toss and choose to bat first. Batting first, Jammu XI Club scored a paltry total of 94 runs in 18.4 overs. Aditya Partap Singh scored 29 runs off 29 balls. Kishani and Sukha of Vicky XI Pathankot were the successful bowlers who took 4 and 03 wickets respectively. Sandhu Cricket Club Ludhiana chased the target easi- ly by losing 4 wickets in 15.2 overs. Ankit and Palla scored 46 and 43 runs respectively. Pushkar and Abhi of Stadium Junior XI Kathua were took 2 and 01 wicket resepctively. Dr. Piyush Singla, AdditionalCEO made a detailed presentationon the to-date status of SportsComplex and the achievements sofar. After its inauguration by theHon'ble Prime Minister in Aprilthis year, 21 sports activities havebeen organised involving 2012

participants. These events includea 3-day State level Rifle and Pistolshooting Championship. The com-plex has 358 annual members whotake part in various sports activi-ties on daily basis.

The meeting had a detaileddiscussion on utilisation and main-tenance of various existing facili-ties and also discussed the modali-ties for creating Centre ofExcellence in identified three dis-ciplines of Archery, Shooting andAthletics (long distance run andthrows). For this purpose, talenthunt will be organised by holdingtrials in the educational institutionsof the area with a view to catchthem young and thereafter theselected boys and girls will beimparted specialised coachingwith the help of experiencedcoaches to groom them for partici-pation in various national andinternational competitions.

In addition, the meeting askedthe Director Sports to organisewinter and summer sports campsof 3 weeks duration each both forthe school children and seniorsand organising competitions attheir culmination. The meetingalso discussed the modalities fororganising such coaching campsand the requirement of the equip-ments.

The Governing Council meet-ing reviewed the implementationof the calendar of activities of theSports Complex from July toDecember 2016 and approved thecalendar of activities prepared forthe next six months. Dr. Bhanemphasised the need for formu-lating calendar of activities for theentire year of 2017 which will bediscussed and finalised at the nextmeeting of the GoverningCouncil.

A police spokesman said, inCricket, the final match of theevent was played betweenShopian and Anantnag in whichAnantnag emerged as winners.In volley ball, the final matchwas played between Anantnagand Pulwama which was wonby the Anantnag, he said.

The spokesman said thefinal match in carrom wasplayed between Awantipora andAnantnag in which the formeremerged as winner. "The chessfinal was played betweenKulgam and Shopian which waswon by the Kulgam. In Khofinal which was played betweenKulgam and Shopian, Kulgamemerged as winners," he said.
