4. PriortoBeginningWork
• Allhandlingoruseofthe13ListedCarcinogensrequiresevaluationbyEH&SandreportingtoCal/OSHA.ContactEH&Sat642-3073orehs@berkeley.edutoscheduleanevaluation.
• Researchersmusthavehands-ontrainingbyaknowledgeabledesignee.Worktechniquemustbeobservedandindependenthandlingofcarcinogenslimitedtoresearchersthathavedemonstratedcompetency.
• Researchersmustbeawareofthesafehandlingofthechemical,itsphysicalproperties(includingsolubility),andhealtheffectsseeninexperimentalstudiesandotherapplicablesources.

• Addmaterialtothechemicalinventory,andmaintainanaccurateinventoryofthematerialatalltimes.
5. EngineeringControls
Usetheengineeringcontrolslistedbelowunlessotherlab-specificinformationisincludedinSection13-Protocol/Procedure.
• Workwiththe13ListedCarcinogensmustbeconductedinafumehoodunlessothercontrolsaredesignatedinthelab-specificProtocol/Proceduresection.Sashheightmustbekeptlowtoavoidescapingfumesandprovideaphysicalbarrier.Theremustbeadesignatedareaforworkingwiththese13listedcarcinogens.Thisareamustbeappropriatelylabeled.
• Laboratoriesandroomswhereany13listedcarcinogensareusedmusthavegeneralroomventilationthatisnegativepressurewithrespecttothecorridorsandexternalenvironment.Thelaboratory/roomdoormustbekeptclosedatalltimes.
6. PersonalProtectiveEquipment

A. ANSIZ87.1-compliantsafetyglasseswithsideshields,orchemicalsplashgoggles.
• Ordinary prescription glasses will NOT provide adequate protection unless they alsomeetANSIstandardandhavecompliantsideshields.
B. Ifthepotentialforexplosion/splashingexists,andadequatecoverageisnotprovidedbythehoodsash,afaceshieldmustbeworn.
SkinandBodyProtection
A. Glovesarerequiredwhenhandlinghazardouschemicals.

RespiratoryProtection
RespiratoryprotectionisnormallynotrequiredforUCBerkeleylaboratoryactivities.Anylabpersonnelconsideringtheuseofarespirator(e.g.N-95respirator,dustmask)mustcontactEH&Sforaworkplaceassessment.
7. FirstAidProceduresandMedicalEmergencies
Intheeventofaninjury,notifyyoursupervisorimmediatelyandEH&Swithin8hours.
GototheOccupationalHealthFacility(TangHealthCenter,oncampus); ifafterhours,gotothenearestemergencyroom(AltaBates,2450AshbyAveinBerkeley);or

• itisalifethreateningemergency;or
• younotareconfidentinyourabilitytofullyassesstheconditionsoftheenvironmentand/orthe condition of the contaminated/injured person, or you cannot be assured of your ownsafety;or
• thecontaminated/injuredpersonisnotbreathingorisunconscious.
Please remember to provide a copy of the appropriate manufacturer SDS (if available) to theemergency responders or physician. At a minimum, be ready to provide the identity/name of anyhazardousmaterialsinvolved.IncaseofskincontactIfskincontactoccurs,and/orskinorclothingareonfire,immediatelydrenchinthesafetyshowerwithcopiousamountsofwaterfornolessthan15minutestoremoveanyremainingcontaminants.Ifpossibletodosowithoutfurtherinjury,removeanyremainingjewelryorclothing.
IncaseofeyecontactRinsethoroughlywithplentyofwaterusinganeyewashstationforatleast15minutes,occasionallyliftingtheupperandlowereyelids.Removecontactlensesifpossible.IfswallowedDoNOTinducevomitingunlessdirectedotherwisebytheSDS.Nevergiveanythingbymouthtoanunconsciousperson.Rinsemouthwithwater.IfinhaledMoveintofreshair.Needlestick/punctureexposureWashtheaffectedareawithantisepticsoapandwarmwaterfor15minutes.

Aregulatedareacanbetheentirelaboratoryoralaboratoryhood,butmustindicateaworkareaoflimitedaccesswherespecialprocedures,knowledge,andworkskillsarerequired.Regulatedareasmustbeclearlymarkedwithsignsthatidentifythechemicalhazardandincludeanappropriatewarning:

PrecautionsforSafeHandling
• Eliminateorsubstituteforalesshazardousmaterialwhenpossible.• Designyourexperimenttousetheleastamountofmaterialpossibletoachievethedesired
result.• DonotexceedthescaleofproceduresspecifiedinProtocol/Proceduresectionwithoutapproval
ofthePI.• Chemicalsmustbeclearlylabeledwiththechemical’snameandhazards.• Knowthelocationofthenearesteyewash,safetyshowerandfireextinguisherbeforebeginning
work.• Laboratoryworksurfacesonwhichacarcinogenishandledmustbeprotectedfrom
contamination.Lineworksurfacewithabsorbent,removablematerial.Providesecondarycontainmentforchemicals.
• Aswithanylaboratorychemical,donotmouthpipettesolutions.• Usecontainmentdevices(suchaslabfumehoodsorgloveboxes)whenopenhandlingis
required.Ensureyourlaboratoryfumehoodisfunctioningproperly.• Forliquidtransfer,thereagentcanbedispensedusingasyringe.• Useplasticsyringesonlyonce;therubbergasketofaplasticsyringemayswellupleadingtoa
jammedsyringe.• Useventilatedcontainmenttoweighoutsolidchemicals.Alternatively,thetaremethodcanbe
usedtopreventinhalationofthechemical.Whileworkinginalaboratoryfumehood,thechemicalisaddedtoapre-weighedcontainer.Thecontaineristhensealedandcanbere-weighedoutsideofthefumehood.Ifchemicalneedstobeaddedorremoved,thismanipulationiscarriedoutinthefumehood.Inthismanner,allopenchemicalhandlingisconductedinthelaboratoryfumehood.
• Fumehoodmustbecheckedeverysix(6)months(callEH&Sat642-3073ifyourfumehoodindicatedmorethansix(6)monthshavepassedsincethelastcheck).
• Whenhandlingoneofthe13ListedCarcinogens,dailychangeofpersonalprotectiveequipmentisrequired:researchersarerequiredtoremoveandleaveprotectiveclothingandequipmentatthepointofexitfromthedesignatedworkareaand,atthelastexitoftheday,toplaceusedclothingandequipmentinimperviouscontainersfordecontaminationordisposal.Labcoatstobelaunderedmustbeplacedinaclearlylabelled,sealedplasticbag(seeSection11.HazardousWasteDisposalandLabCoatlaundering).Contaminatedequipment(gloves,wipes,disposablesyringes,etc)mustbethoroughlyrinsed,placedinsealedplasticbaganddisposedofintheregularsolidwastebin.

• Usehighefficiencyparticulateair(HEPA)filters,carbonfilters,orscrubbersystemswithcontainmentdevicestoprotecteffluentandvacuumlines,pumps,andtheenvironment.
• Researchersarerequiredtowashhands,forearms,faceandneckuponeachexitfromthedesignatedcarcinogenworkarea.Theuseofwetwipes(likebabywipes)isacceptableforfaceandneckwash.
ConditionsforSafeStorage
• Storecarcinogensinclosed,labeled,andchemicallycompatiblecontainersandawayfromheat,flame,andotherreactivechemicalsthatmaydispersethecarcinogenifmixedduringanaccidentalrelease.
• Alwaysplacelarge-volumecontainersonalow,protectedshelforinanotherlocationwheretheywillnotbeaccidentallyspilledorknockedover.
• 13ListedCarcinogensmustbestoredinadesignatedarea.Thelabel“carcinogen”mustbeclearlyindicatedonthecontainerorshelf.
• Storenonflammablecarcinogenswithinsecondarycontainment.• Chemicalsthatrequirerefrigerationmustbestoredappropriately.• Storeflammablecarcinogenswithinflammablestoragecabinetandsecondarycontainer.
Disposal
● Wastematerialsgeneratedmustbetreatedasahazardouswaste.● TheemptycontainermustberinsedthreetimeswithaCOMPATIBLEsolvent;leaveitopen
inthebackofthehoodovernight.Solventrinsesandwaterrinsemustbedisposedofashazardouswaste.
● Asanalternative,unrinsedemptycontainerscanbedisposedofthroughEH&Sashazardouswaste.Theunrinsedemptycontainersmustbecapped.
● Donotmixwithincompatiblewastestreams.● Decontaminationoftheemptycontainerinordertouseitforotherpurposesisnot
permitted.
9. ChemicalSpill
Spill–Assesstheextentofdanger;ifnecessaryrequesthelpbycalling911(fromacellphone:510-642-3333)foremergencyassistanceor510-642-3073fornon-lifethreateningsituations.Ifyoucannotassesstheconditionsoftheenvironmentwellenoughtobesureofyourownsafety,donotenterthearea.Ifpossiblehelpcontaminatedorinjuredpersons.Evacuatethespillarea.Avoidbreathingvaporsfromspill.Ifpossible,confinethespilltoasmallareausingaspillkitorabsorbentmaterial.Keepothersfromenteringcontaminatedarea(e.g.,usecautiontape,barriers,etc.).
• MinorSpill–Intheeventofaminorspill,ifthereisnopotentialforhazardouschemicalexposure,reportthespillto510-642-3073andifyouaretrained,proceedtocleanit.Useappropriatepersonalprotectiveequipmentandclean-upmaterialforchemicalspilled.Doublebagspillwasteinclearplasticbags,labelandrequestpick-up.
• MajorSpill–Anyhazardouschemicalspillthatinvolveschemicalexposure,anychemicalspillthatduetosizeand/orhazardrequirescapabilitiesbeyondyourtraining,oranychemicalspillthatgivestheperception(becauseofodor,forexample)thattherehasbeenahazardousrelease.Call911or510-642-3073forassistance.

10. CleaningandDecontamination
Lab-specificinformationondecontaminationmaybeincludedintheProtocol/Proceduresection.
• WearingproperPPE,laboratoryworksurfacesmustbecleanedattheconclusionofeachprocedureandattheendofeachworkday.
• Uponleavingthedesignatedworkarea,removeanypersonalprotectiveequipmentwornandwashhands,forearms,faceandneck.
• Attheendofeachproject,thoroughlydecontaminatethedesignatedareabeforeresumingnormallaboratoryworkintheareaandremovingcarcinogenwarningsigns.
11. HazardousWasteDisposalandLabCoatlaundering
CarcinogenWasteDisposal
• Disposableglovesslightlycontaminatedwithchemicalsmustbethoroughlyrinsedbeforebeingdiscardedintheregulartrash.
• Forheavilycontaminatedequipment(gloves,wipes,disposablesyringes,etc),placeinachemically-compatibleimperviouscontainer(i.e.sealableplasticbag,containerwithtwistonlid)andlabelclearly.Decontaminateoutsideofcontainerpriortoremovalfromtheworkarea;storewithinafumehooduntilpickupbyEH&S.
• Whenfeasible,carcinogensmustbeinactivatedpriortodisposal.• Disposeofregularlygeneratedchemicalwastewithin6months.• ContactEH&Sat642-3073ifyouneedassistance.
LabelWaste
• Label all waste containers. See the EH&S Fact Sheet, “Hazardous Waste Management” forgeneralinstructionsonproceduresfordisposingofhazardouswaste.
LabCoatLaundering

Putupanappropriatehazardsignonyourfumehoodtoalertotherlabusers.Avoidtheformationofdustswithsolids.Carefullyweighmaterialsasnormalinasealedcontainer.Transfersolidsintoatared,containerinafumehood,usingsecondarycontainmenttomovethesealedcontainertoandfromthefumehoodduringweighing.Inaproperlyfunctioningfumehood,addreagenttothereactionvessel.Ifthereagentisaliquid,dispenseandtransfertothereactionvesselvolumetricallyusingeitherasyringeorpipettor.CleanupworkareaanddisposeofcontaminatedmaterialsasoutlinedinSections10&11.
