Andyoucantell.Listeningtoyouandtoothersteachtheirpeopleandinstructeachother,thenamesofprofessorsandpastors,bothsaintedandstillmilitant,trickleout.“AsProf.so-and-sousedtosay.”“Thisiswhatmybishoptaughtme.”“Ilearnedthisfromoneofmyelders.”Eachofus,likely,hasa(ormorethanoneeven!)spiritualfather/mentorwhohasimpartedtoussomedeepandvitalspiritualtruths,truthsthatcomfortusindarkdaysandthathelpusinstructthecongregationswenowserve.

ThatispreciselywhatPaulwasforTimothy2andTitus.Inthesepastoralletters“aconcernedspiritualfatheriswritingtodearlyloved“sonsinthefaith,”tomenwhowereespeciallyclosetohim,whohe

TodayourtaskistodigdeepintothetruthsthatPastorPaulpassedontoPastorTimothyregardingmoneyandthedangeritposedtothesoulsofGod’speople.WewanttohearwhatPaulhastosaytousforthesakeofourpeople.WewanttohearwhatPaulhastosaytousforthesakeofourownsouls.Salvationisatstake.Thisisnotamattertotakelightly.GodblessourstudyofhisWordtodaythatitmaybenefitoursoulsandthesoulsofourpeople.3

1) Don’tbearrogantasthoughyourrichesarewhatmakesyouwhatyouare.Thesamewarningwouldalsoapplytothosewhodon’thaveit.Thesamedangerexiststhattheywouldfindtheiridentity/joy/contentment/peaceinhavingmoney.Despairistheoppositeofarrogance.Theywoulddespairbecausetheydon’thaveitbecausetheywanttohaveandwouldbe“somebody”iftheyhadit.

2) Don’tputyourhopeinit.Again,thesamewarningapplieswhetheritishadornothad,whetheritisinthehandornotinthehand.Wealthissouncertainandthereareplentyofexamplesoftheuncertaintyofwealth.Theuncertaintyofinvestments,retirement.Howmuchdoyoureallyneedforretirement?Howmuchwill$1getyoulateroninlifeisallaguess?PaulratherurgesthatTimothywouldputhishopeinGodwhorichly/abundantlyallthingsforourenjoyment.
