1 EPIC FIGHT 1 TIMOTHY 6:3-19 – THE LOVE OF MONEY SEDUCES OUR SOULS South Central District Pastor’s Conference @ Immanuel Lutheran Church, NRH, TX April 11-12, 2016 Pastor Nate Bourman ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ MENTORS 1 It’s always fun to sit around the table at a circuit meeting or at a conference like this one and just listen to pastors give their wisdom. By God’s Spirit and grace each of us has been filled with wisdom from God’s Word and insights into the Word and the true and faithful teaching of that Word. Together we sharpen each other, encourage each other, rebuke each other, gently correct each other, even train each other for works of service so that the body of Christ might be built up (cf. 2 Timothy 3:14-16; Ephesians 4:11-16). We have quite a heritage of faith that goes back generations and generations among us. And you can tell. Listening to you and to others teach their people and instruct each other, the names of professors and pastors, both sainted and still militant, trickle out. “As Prof. so-and-so used to say.” “This is what my bishop taught me.” “I learned this from one of my elders.” Each of us, likely, has a (or more than one even!) spiritual father/mentor who has imparted to us some deep and vital spiritual truths, truths that comfort us in dark days and that help us instruct the congregations we now serve. That is precisely what Paul was for Timothy 2 and Titus. In these pastoral letters “a concerned spiritual father is writing to dearly loved “sons in the faith,” to men who were especially close to him, who he 1 Unless otherwise noted all Bible quotes will come from the HCSB. 2 Knight 8: “Three things stand out about Timothy: (a) In regard to his background, Timothy had a strong religious heritage in his own family, biblical training from his youth, and a strong commendation already as a young man from the church, but his own congregation at Lystra and the neighboring congregation at Iconium (2 Timothy 1:5,6; 3:14-17; Acts 16:1-3). (b) In regard to his service, Timothy was a faithful and consistent coworker with and assistant to Paul, who regarded Timothy as one of his most trustworthy and dedicated
