MOBILE CO, AL is the second most-populous county
in the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2017 census,
its population was 413,955. Its county seat is Mobile,
which was founded on the Mobile River. The city, river,
and county were named in honor of the indigenous
Maubila tribe.
Mobile County comprises the Mobile, Alabama
Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area was occupied
for thousands of years by varying cultures of indigenous
peoples. The historic Choctaw had occupied this area
along what became called the Mobile River when
encountered by early French traders and colonists,
who founded Mobile in the early eighteenth century.
The British took over the territory in 1763 (along with

River) after defeating the French in the Seven
Years’ War. During the American Revolutionary
War, it came under Spanish rule as part of
Spanish Florida. Spain ceded the territory to the
United States after the War of 1812.
The word “Mobile” is believed to stem from a
Choctaw Indian word for “paddlers”. The area
was occupied by French colonists from 1702–
1763, whose influence was strong in the city.
Today, Mobile County has a limited form of home
rule and is governed by a three-member county
commission. Each commissioner represents
a single-member district and is elected by the
voters of that district to serve a four-year term.
Mobile is also the home of the University of
South Alabama (USA), a public research
university divided into ten colleges, including
one of Alabama’s two state-supported medical
schools. USA has an enrollment of over 16,000
students and employs more than 6,000 faculty,
administrators, and support staff.
The city is most known for being the only saltwater
port in the state, and the Port of Mobile has
contributed significantly to the city’s economy
throughout its history.

Mobile Alabama is the only saltwater port, located on the Mobile River at the head of the
Mobile Bay and the north-central Gulf Coast. The Port of Mobile has always played a key role in the economic health of the city, beginning with the settlement as an important trading center between the French colonists and Native Americans, down to its current role as the 12th-largest port in the United States.
Considered one of the Gulf Coast’s cultural centers, Mobile has several art museums, a symphony orchestra, professional opera, professional ballet company, and a large concentration of historic architecture.
Mobile is known for having the oldest organized Carnival or Mardi Gras celebrations in the United States. Its French Catholic colonial settlers celebrated this festival from the first decade of the 18th century. Beginning in 1830, Mobile was host to the first formally organized Carnival mystic society to celebrate with a parade in the United States. (In New Orleans such a group is called a krewe.)
For the full Mobile Mardi Gras experience, one must
attend Joe Cain Day and all of its uniquely Mobile events. Joe Cain is considered the founder of Mobile’s modern-day Mardi Gras. In 1866, he paraded through downtown Mobile dressed as an Indian chief, Chief Slackabamarinico aka “Chief Slac”. This small celebration rejuvenated the city’s Carnival tradition after the Civil War and Joe Cain became Mobile’s iconic Mascot.
There’s so much to see and do in Mobile. Visit Dauphin Street which is Mobile’s little sister to New Orleans’s Frenchmen Street, and it’s a blast. Honky-tonk bars keep
company with fashion-forward restaurants, an independent movie house, and a killer bookstore. Pedestrian good times ensue, all hours of day and night.
Take a tour and view all the architecture. One of the Gulf Coast’s oldest establishments (it was founded as the capital of colonial French Louisiana in 1702), this city is straight-up historic. Not only does the downtown feature beautiful commercial architecture, but Mobile is home to stunning small neighborhoods with a wealth of historic homes. De Tonti Square Historic District is a mini-Garden District straight out of New Orleans, while Oakleigh could be Savannah, with its verdant squares Visit one of the many museums Mobile has to offer. The GulfQuest, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico, this supremely interactive museum explores all aspects of life, commerce and culture on the Gulf. www.coastalliving.com

Prichard is located in the southwest corner of Mobile County. It has a mayor/council form of government.
Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Billy Williams was raised in Prichard.
Originally known as Toulminville, the community that is now Prichard was originally the site of a station on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. In 1879, Cleveland Prichard purchased the land from the original owners with the hopes of establishing a livestock and vegetable farming center that would supply other regions of the country with fresh early vegetables. Prichard urged local farmers to raise truck crops and bought the vegetables from them and shipped them throughout the nation. Prichard also built the Prichard Race Course, which flourished briefly as a winter training ground for thoroughbred race horses.
For the most part, the Prichard settlement was located on the Southside of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad track. Only downtown streets such as Wilson Ave., Main, Clark, and Holmes had any noticeable amount of residents on them.
Prichard remained a village until shortly after the beginning of World War I. As a result of the Chickasaw Shipbuilding plant and building of the town of Chickasaw by the Tennessee Coal & Iron Company, the population of Prichard increased very rapidly.
On August 4, 1925, an election was held that allowed the property owners of Prichard to decide whether it should be incorporated as a town or not. 116 votes were cast that day, and the Incorporation passed with a count of 93 – 23. From henceforth, after roughly two hundred years as a settlement, Prichard would be recognized as a city.
The city reached a peak population of around 47,000 in the early
1960s, but the population has been declining since that time. In the 1980s and 1990s, major employers in the area, including the Scott and International paper companies and Brookley Field Air Base, shut down, severely affecting the local economy. Prichard declared bankruptcy in 1999 and 2009. In December 2010 the city defaulted on its pension fund.

The city had its peak of population in 1960, when the shipyard was still operating at high capacity. Decline in shipyard jobs has resulted in a decline in overall population since then.
Ray Sawyer of the band Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show was born in Chickasaw in 1937.
Formerly an unincorporated community, voters in Semmes approved incorporation of a part of the community as the city of Semmes on August 17, 2010.
Semmes is on the central Gulf Coast and has a subtropical climate, which consists of warm, wet winters and very hot, very humid summers. Semmes is also vulnerable to hurricanes, which the area frequently experiences.

The yellowhammer, also known as the northern flicker or yellow-shafted flicker, became the official
state bird of Alabama in 1927. Soldiers from Alabama were nicknamed “yellowhammers” in the Civil
War due to their grey-and-yellow uniforms, which matched the colors of the bird. Alabama soon
became known as the “yellowhammer state.”
TYellowhammers eat mostly insects including ants, flies and caterpillars along with snails, berries,
nuts and seeds. www.50states.com

The camellia was designated the state flower of Alabama in 1959, replacing the original state flower -
goldenrod (adopted in 1927). Camellias appear on the Alabama quarter. Alabama also recognizes an
official state wildflower.
Sometimes called “the rose of winter,” the camellia (Camellia japonica L) is a native of China, Korea,
Taiwan, and Japan. The camellia is cultivated in the southeastern United States in many different
colors and forms of flowers. statesymbolsusa.org
