Weathering & Erosion

Objective

By the end of class, CWBAT define the vocabulary for Sections 7.1 & 7.2 and use those terms to create a concept map.

Weathering

Process by which rocks on or near Earth’s surface break down and change

Erosion Removal and

transport of weathered material from one location to another

Mechanical Weathering

Process by which rocks and minerals break down into smaller pieces Only changes size

and shape NOT composition

Influences on Mechanical Weathering

1. Temperature Frost Wedging▪ Repeated

freezing/thawing of water in cracks of rocks

▪ Expansion during freezing causes cracks to expand

▪ Ice takes up 9% more space than liquid water

Influences on Mechanical Weathering

2. Pressure Joints (long,

curved cracks) form when upper layers of rock are removed from bedrock

▪ Bedrock expands Exfoliation▪ When outer rock

layers are stripped away

▪ Like peeling an onion

Chemical Weathering

Process by which rocks and minerals undergo changes in their composition as the result of chemical reactions

Affected by mineral/rock type, temperature, water, oxygen, acid precipitation

Chemical Weathering: Water Hydrolysis

The reaction of water with other substances

Occurs in the decomposition of silicate minerals

Chemical Weathering: Oxygen Oxidation

Chemical reaction of oxygen with other substances

Example: rust on an iron chain

Affects iron containing minerals like magnetite, biotite, pyrite

Chemical Weathering: Carbon Dioxide

When carbon dioxide from respiration combines with water, it creates weak carbonic acid Can dissolve calcite

in marble and limestone along with other minerals

Chemical Weathering: Acid Precipitation

Caused by the oxidation of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides which are released into the atmosphere by human activities
